Turkish Posted 7 November, 2012 Share Posted 7 November, 2012 The Joiners appears to be struggling financially. There are even suggestions it might have to close down and if it does then that will be the death of live music in Southampton. I am sure most people on here with an interest in music would have been to the Joiners at some point and there is no way an iconic Southampton venue should be allowed to die. This place is part as huge part of our city!! I would urge all of you to support this venue and get behind it, even if it's just popping in for a pint on a matchday, anything to help save the place. It's a fantastic place and the city won't be the same without it.

Turkish Posted 7 November, 2012 Author Share Posted 7 November, 2012 The Joiners is legendary, but I think The Brook might have something to say about this. The Brook is great for older bands and tribute acts. The Joiners was always the place to go for upcoming bands. They'd had the likes of the Manic Street Preachers, Suede, Oasis, Charlatans, Artic Monkeys and Libertines all play there before they made it. And of course the famous Nivana gig in the last 80's which people swear blind they were at that never actually happened!
Joe Kirkup Posted 7 November, 2012 Share Posted 7 November, 2012 Never crosses my mind to go in there pre-match - does it open lunchtimes? Will go in Sat if so.

Ex Lion Tamer Posted 7 November, 2012 Share Posted 7 November, 2012 Classic problem of losing long standing owners and the new ones not knowing how to sustain the place. The Railway in Winchester had similar problems recently
RedArmy Posted 7 November, 2012 Share Posted 7 November, 2012 Rising beer prices, and a growing trend of bands choosing to go to places like Wedgewood Rooms and Old Fire Station because they can sell more tickets. It's hardly surprising Pat's struggling. Would be a huge shame to see it go.
The Cat Posted 7 November, 2012 Share Posted 7 November, 2012 Sad days. I used to go there a lot 10-15 years ago. Haven't been regularly for sometime although they still book the odd decent band. As said above most bands of reasonable size now play the Wedgewood Rooms. There's also other local venues booking the sort of bands they'd put on, The Cellar being one. I've seen both Field Music and Django Django there in the past few months, and they exactly the sort of acts who would pack out the Joiners. It's still cheap, for example Bright Light Bright Light are there tonight for just £5 yet it's not sold out. And they are a band with a decent amount of exposure and radio play. alpine_saint Posted 7 November, 2012 Share Posted 7 November, 2012 The Joiners is a major cultural venue in the city. The Council should step in and help.

Kasabian, Editors and (the lesser known, but equally as good in their short existence) JJ72 also played there. Great little venue, it would be a shame if it went. Bollards Posted 7 November, 2012 Share Posted 7 November, 2012 Agreed it's a legendary place and I shall go again soon when I can. However they don't help themselves. I was there a few months back for the equally legendary Jimbob from Carter USM along with a good few others and they didn't have any draught beer of any type! BadgerBadger Posted 8 November, 2012 Share Posted 8 November, 2012 Talking Heads seems to be doing alright - ended up there the other night for a Rockabilly Burlesque night, it was a most surreal evening, the magic of alcohol ensured it was a most excellent night, great range of ales

The Railway in Winchester had similar problems recently Unfair criticism. Pat knows the place of old and Glenn is very savvy. They've been undone by the economic climate, rising beer prices and bands promising to bring the world and bringing no one. It's a cracking venue run by two lovely blokes. Do as Turkish says and support it before it's too late.
scotty Posted 8 November, 2012 Share Posted 8 November, 2012 Correct me if I'm wrong, but arent the brook, the joiners and the platform tavern all owned by the same people? The brook and the platform are doing well enough.

Saint Fan CaM Posted 9 November, 2012 Share Posted 9 November, 2012 I played at the Joiners quite a few times 'back in the day' - great venue and as Turkish says, it has always catered for younger up and coming bands, so had a niche in the local music market and it would be terrible to see it go. If it's suffering falling numbers it's not alone - there are plenty of live music venues in and around the City and they are all competing with a dwindling market - The Brook, The Talking Heads, The Platform Tavern, The Concord Club, Soul Cellar, The Joshua Tree + many, many 'regular' pubs that put on live music. Look also at the social club scene - once the first choice weekend evening destination of the working class and key providers of musical entertainment...they're dying on their @rses because the general populace don't want to be seen in those places (despite their often cheap booze), they then can't afford to pay entertainers (or only pay enough for poor ones) and then wonder why nobody turns up! The reasons are many for the decline - cheap supermarket booze, big screen TV's at home, people too lazy to get off their butts and get out, some venues not advertising well enough, Simon Cowell effect, youngsters nowadays have more opportunity to practice music rather than just listen to it...etc. etc. But you can't blame the bands - why should they advertise for the venue and in particular, why should they always be expected to bring rent-a-crowd (I've never got that)? They've already spent a fortune on gear, rehearsed themselves silly, spent money getting to the gig, spent more money on drinks at the gig...etc.
