Lighthouse Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 Seeing as how we're constantly getting exposed down the flanks and Fox and Clyne are both better going forward than defending, how about playing something like this. If we are attacked down our left, Jos can come over and cover Fox meaning there is less pressure on Lallana to get back and defend. Likewise on the right with Fonte covering Clyne. We should deal with crosses and set pieces better having 3 centre halves in the team and hopefully when Cork gets back he will make a better fist of running the midfield than Davis and Morgan have managed so far. If he can cover the front of defence, it leaves Morgan free to get forward and play the ball to the front 3. Maybe I'm overthinking the issue but I think it would give the team a better balance. It can't be any worse than tonight surely. Going away from home with 4 all out attacking players is asking for trouble. - - - - - - - - - - - Gazza - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fonte - - - Yoshi - - - Hooiveld - - - - Clyne - - - - - - - Cork - - - - - - - - - - - Fox - - - - - - - - - - - Morgan - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Gaston - - - - - - - - - - - Lallana - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Lambert - - - - - - - - - - -
The Kraken Posted 6 November, 2012 Share Posted 6 November, 2012 Still too lightweight in midfield; IMO we need a proper midfield 3 of Schneiderlin, Cork and Davis/JWP. Anything less just gets outmuscled and overrun too easily, and the extra man would allow a touch more defensive cover. Also, Jos Hooiveld shouldn't be anywhere near a Premier League first team. Rasiak-9- Posted 6 November, 2012 Share Posted 6 November, 2012 It could work but the problem is simply that we don't know how to defend as a unit. We're not used to it. For the past 3 seasons our defensive strategy has been just don't-give-the-ball-away-and-besides-which-we'll-outscore-our-opponents-anyway. We aren't used to/aren't built for ACTUALLY defending Even with those numbers back defending a low cross or shot pinged into our box would still cause a ****load of panic, probably resulting in more goals from someone playing everyone onside/giving a penalty away deflecting the ball away from the keeper. Sour Mash Posted 6 November, 2012 Share Posted 6 November, 2012 We need pace going forward - we need to scare the opposition more, stop them being able to press so high up the pitch and force us into errors. Instead we pass the ball slowly back and forth in midfield and put ourselves under pressure. I still don't believe out back 4 is as bad as many are focusing on. In the heart of the swansea defence wouldn't be too bad.
pingwing Posted 6 November, 2012 Share Posted 6 November, 2012 Just use the 4-3-3 from the first day against city, that seemed to work well when we packed the midfield and stopped worrying about our back line like they were going to wet them selves if morg or davis moved more than 10 feet from them. We are all concerned and I know that you are desperately searching for an answer, but I honestly don't think it will achieved by this formation, which adds another non-Premier League standard centre back to the team.
