Morgan had an off night but Davis is just a shocking player all round. Too slow, too lightweight, can't pass, can't tackle, delays on the ball and causes us to lose possession...I could go on.

 

Problem we have is as we have stated earlier, our midfield is far far too lightweight for the system we play.

He didn't really try yesterday though. No effort going forward, sloppy passing and tracking back he was awful. He didn't have a lot of options in front of him but when they were there he didn't dare to use them.

 

He's been very good so far this season but that was just plain ****.

How right you both are. WBA had proper central midfielders who shut us down and protected the back four. Midfield fulcrum, sideways and backwards, turned his back on Odemwie's shot. Neville showed him up. It's no good having 55% possession in your own half, give the ball away (Davis) in their penalty area and concede a goal, losing 2-0 in the process. I see we got no points for the most passes yet again, but it's definitely the way to get relegated.

.....Steve Davis wasn't at his best either. Skill aside, the main problem with our midfield is not the lack of quality.... but their lack of muscle.

 

I'm excluding Ramirez from this comment as he played like a man fresh back from injury, but we won most of our free-kicks..for fouls on Adam Lallana.. who was bowled over like a man in a hurricane.

 

Having watched the QPR v. Reading game on Sunday, I was shocked by the ferocity of some of the tackling...mostly by sturdy 6 foot heavyweights. I dread to think how we will handle them.

exactly nothing to do with spraying passes or looking good, we need players who want to put their bodies on the line for the club. block shots no matter the pain, defend first and win the battle in midfield not just retain poession for the purpose of good stats

Completely agree with this. I never quite get all the Morgan backslapping a lot of folks seem to do on here. He seems far too lightweight and certainly isn't commanding in any respect of the word. Bring back Jimmy Case please!!

Morgan was poor at West Ham as well by the way. In contrast Davis had a great game. Still think we need a third `proper' central midfielder playing if we are to have both Lallana and Ramirez in the side.

I just don't get him. The number of 'just unloading passes' he does is enormous. He rarely picks a pass, never gives and goes even when we need to and mostly passes to the nearest player backwards or sideways irrespective of that player getting clattered as a result of the pass. He doesn't tackle, just tries to nick the ball away provided he doesn't get clobbered. The other night wasn't the first time he has chickened out of important challenges but thanks to Gary Neville it has really shown him up. We need a ball winner in front of the back four not a pretty boy pansy that rarely does anything of real value.

I am glad someone has had the bravery to say what has needed to be said for a long time.

However he was atrocious on Monday night - but his bad performances have been few and far between. He's one of those players who plays well in a team with confidence, but never going to be a match winner on his own.

 

You can slate him for playing the easy pass, but we all know he is capable of the hollywood 60 yard cross field ball as well. What would you rather, he passed it to our defence, or gave the ball away trying to pass it forward everytime. No he's not a player who is going to run around a lot, and put in flying crunching tackles, but then we don't play like that. I'm sure if he had a bit of a powerhouse alongside him in midfield he'd look far better. Almost think that him and Davis are too often trying to do the same thing.

 

It was only about a month ago people on this forum were saying he should be called up for France but never would get a chance while Deschamps is in charge. He has put in more good performances than bad this season IMO but we're just not playing well as a team at the moment.

We don't need a defensive midfielder that isn't a ball winner, can't be arsed to do a lung bursting run, ever, never gives the ball away because he just unloads it, hits the odd 40 yd crossfield ball that nearly always gets cut out and just chickens out when it really matters. There is no more slack to cut we are in trouble. Adkins is being hung out to dry, his back is to the wall and I sense that avoiding relegation has now become the holy grail not 20k passes in the season.

Need to recall Hammond, get shot of Davis and reinstate JPW into the team. Every player has the odd off game but Davis has more off games than good. Morgan can't be faulted for playing with players of little quality. He'll soon return to form when we get decent players playing along side him. High time Jack Cork was fit again and ready to get in there.

The problem with Morgan is that he can be very inconsistent, but when he's on his game he is terrific and doesn't let the opposition get any head of steam in the middle of the park. Man Utd at home comes to mind.

 

But he has off games, and when he has those it screws us right up, because he's the player in our team who sets the tempo. He's very talented and adds alot of energy to the middle when he's on his game. It's very fickle to start coming out now saying that he's rubbish.

 

Very good player going through a bad spell like the rest of the side.
