hypochondriac Posted 5 November, 2012 Posted 5 November, 2012 Jesus, there are some real shockers in here. http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2012/nov/04/uk-million-selling-singles-full-list Tellytubbies sold more than Rod Stewart, FFS. alpine_saint Posted 5 November, 2012 Author Posted 5 November, 2012 Boney M were great. I love getting their Greatest Hits out at Xmas. But Aqua - "Barbie Girl" ?? Robson & Jerome ??? FFS. And too much X-Factor sh*t there for my liking.
Colinjb Posted 5 November, 2012 Posted 5 November, 2012 Quite amused to see that Barbie Girl outsold Believe by Cher. Resonates with my teenage years.
trousers Posted 5 November, 2012 Posted 5 November, 2012 Quite surprised to see that the 1980s had far fewer million selling singles than the 1970s and 1990s. I guess the 80s was more a case of quantity over quality
Saint_clark Posted 5 November, 2012 Posted 5 November, 2012 If you weren't allowed to buy singles until you're say 21, then it would be a better reflection of quality. But of course tellytubbies is going to be bought for kids, barbie girl is going to be bought by teens...much in the same way that Bieber is selling like crazy now, but I doubt to many over the age of 18.
Doctoroncall Posted 5 November, 2012 Posted 5 November, 2012 I only ever bought three singles, it was albums all the way for me!
Lord Duckhunter Posted 5 November, 2012 Posted 5 November, 2012 What a depressing list. Top one was basically there because most of the nation had a collective meltdown. Second was a charity donation. IMHO Bohemian Rhapsody is the biggest pile of over rated shiete ever recorded.Mull of Kintyre is embaressing for such a great songwritter and performer. Wet Wet Wet, Boney M, Robson & Jerome FFS, even the great man Stevie Wonder's effort in the top 10 is his worst song. If an alien came down and looked at that list and listened to most of the shiete on the list, he'd think we were French, not the country that gave the world some of the greatest music ever produced.
Lighthouse Posted 5 November, 2012 Posted 5 November, 2012 Good grief. All but one of Queen's hits were outsold by Price Tag by Jessie Jay. I can understand kids buying Barbie Girl and Teletubbies, that doesn't bother me but Christ alive there is some garbage in that list. Matt Cardle is on there but nothing by the Beegees. Not sure what it is about Unchained Melody which made people buy 3 versions of it either.
SuperMikey Posted 5 November, 2012 Posted 5 November, 2012 I only ever bought three singles, it was albums all the way for me! Likewise. At the age of 12(ish) I bought Tainted Love by Marilyn Manson, Starbucks by A and Burn Baby Burn by Ash. I bought the album that Ash's single was on (Free All Angels) the week after and never looked back. Only point in getting a single now is if it's a remix.

Crikey, Tainted Love by Soft Cell was one of mine. Special AKA and What-I-Like-Most-About-You-Is-Your-Girlfriend and Kraftwerk and the Model. What a trio!!!
Badger Posted 6 November, 2012 Posted 6 November, 2012 Good to see Acker Bilk in there. Showaddywaddy as well. Definitely what the officianado's might call an eclectic mix.
