Target Players for the January Window

Michael Dawson or someone with an equal level of experience, I don't know a lot about European leagues but the Italians always seem to churn out decent centre backs. Probably a few good shouts in the Dutch league and they always seem to fit well into the English game.

Matt Phillips or Tom Ince as we need pace out wide with this system

I can sense a frustrating window ahead. I can see some people already jumping up and down demanding signings on the 1st, and even if that would be ideal, it's never really going to happen.

And with the position I believe we'll be in, our options will be limited to scraps at best. That's what worries me, we'll need to seriously gamble our finances in January in order to stay in this league. Decent players are only going to come here for money.

I think we need 4 additions minimum.

CB, LB, RW, CM.

Agree with all that.

Yep, spot on and this is how I see it. I just can't see any proven premier league player coming here if things don't improve before January.

CB and LB absolutely need to be prioritised. and brought in as early as possible. I can live without a CM, partiuclarly if Jack Cork can come back and make the impact we all hope he can and will. A RW, well that would be nice, but I'm not sure if I'd prioritise that position at all. In the short term its the only place on the pitch that Mayuka is going to play. If Theo Walcott can be turned from a young striker into a winger for Arsenal, then Mayuka can do that for us this season as far as I'm concerned. If finances are an issue (as they surely will be) I'd rather spend money on just 2 defenders than spreading it round for 4 new players.

Maybe RW was a litte more of a bonus signing, I'd like an upgrade on Puncheon eventually though, and I think we probably need a tad more cover on the flanks.

If we can get Jack back then that'll be great, still think we need a bit more muscle in the middle though.

Pointless thread.

No decent player is going to join a team so clearly Championship-bound.

Another give up merchant post. Spineless. Bloody glad I don't have to rely on you in a difficult situation. Roll over, give up and moan about it ad nauseum. I expect at the end of the January window if we do you will tell us that he or they cannot possibly be any good, why would they join Southampton as we are obviously Championship bound. Then you will proceed to repeat in every thread until the end of the season. Totally regardless of our results of course. Then at the end of the season you will start bleating on about getting signings in quick for the next season even though you know that like every other club in the country we will not do that, and you will continue with this all summer long. God help us.

David Wheater, has experience and has shown potential in the past but never quite lived up to it.

Remember seeing him linked a year or so ago. This is probably the type of player we'll need to target.

I'll imagine we'll go back in for Boro's Rhys Williams as well, but he may well look at our situation and Boro's situation and think twice...!

Yep, I reckon its a lost cause. IMO we will be more adrift come the window opening than Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio, so no f**ker is going to come for anything but a quick buck/final pay day a la Olivier Bernard, Calum Davenport and Jamie Redknapp.

You can call me all the names under the sun and anticipate all my future posts if that makes you feel better and more hard-core über fan...

Michael Dawson on loan with an option to buy if we stay up - I could see that happening as he's not playing much at Spurs.

I'd love to see us sign Butland and Zaha for the future but I just can't see it

Other than that I think we're looking at Championship players who want too step up to the Premier League and might stay with us or a season if we do -,and maybe one or two unknowns from Holland or Italy.

Matt Phillips for pace on the right - and because it looks like we'll lose Mayuka to the African Nations Cup for a month if not 2 at the end of January.

Charlie Austin would be another good signing - he's looking too good for the Championship and is going to want out of Burnley - and they'll probably need to sell.

Maybe Scott Dann or Curtis Davies to strengthen the defence. I'd love to see Douglas Franco Texeira but again not sure it will happen for us.

We desperately need a left back - Erik Pieters from Holland would be top of my list but I again I can't see it happening for us. Maybe we'll seal the deal for Nicolai Boilesen instead.

At the same time we need to move some of the deadwood out. De Ridder and Hooiveld back to Holland. Dickson and Seabourne back to League 1. Butterfield back to the Championship. And Do Prado back to Brazil.

Maybe send Tandanari Lee out on loan as well to get some more experience of English Football back in the Championship.

No need to rush in January for new signings, as the only winnable game we have is Wigan. The rest will all be bonus points in reality.

I don't think we can look at it like that anymore. As Noriwch and Wigan have shown, if you're well drilled and catch them on and off day then they're as winanble as any other.

I'd go along with that but finding it hard to believe it will happen... Like why it didn't in the summer!

A leftback and a two decent centre backs! Bruno Martins Indi from Feyenoord would be a good shout, young strong CB who at 20 has already been capped for the Dutch national side, only problem could be that he signed a new 4 year contract in Februari, though Feyenoord do need money.

Angelo Ogbonna. Quality centre back. He signed a long contract earlier this year though so might be pricey.

Gary Caldwell. Leader, organiser and very experienced.

Jean Armel Kana-Biyik. We were in for him in the summer and should go back. Quality player.

Martin Olsson. Like Clyne, but on the left.

Liam Trotter. Physical yet technically good. Would shore up the midfield and very versatile.

I would scour eastern europe and buy 2 of the biggest meanest mudda-fokkers to play in the middle of defence, you know a pair of knuckle draggers who will scare the £30 m pretty boy premiership forwards sh**less, add to that a slightly more mobile left footed evil bas**rd to play left back and maybe a vicious but fair midfield destroyer to break things up in front of them.

I still think Boruc will come good especially if the mongs give him a chance and we have enough going forward to score regularly in this league.

I think 6ft 6 Yevhen Khacheridi fits the bill. Here he is putting Andy Carroll on his arse at the Euros.

Depending on whether we have managed to win some games in November, I'd imagine we are seriously re-looking at our finances and chosing a path that doesn't leave us with a millstone round our neck for the foreseeable future.

I would be really disappointed if we don't get them in straight away rather than haggle over the price with several options in mind.

Like to see Phillips for the right flank and any defender than can (a) Head a ball (b) does not score own goals © can pass to a team mate (d) not give away stupid penalties.

I don't get it. That has nothing to do with saints, players join relegation fighting clubs every season, clubs have overhauled their team in January and signed excellent players. Some like a challenge, some like the money, some just want football.

Put Saints aside for a moment and think about what you've said, because I refuse to believe you're stupid enough to ignore the dozens of seasons you've witnessed that completely go against your point.

Yes, I am sooooo looking forward to us signing the Mark2 versions of Bernard, Redknapp and Davenport.....

The Wigan game is at the beginning of Feb, in January comes include Villa away and Everton at home, surely they'd be considered winnable?

can't give you names, but AT LEAST ..three or four defenders....and even ** a top class keeper. (not another... I hear someone say...). BUT even if we say that Kelvin's time has gone (though not necessarily) ....neither Gazza or Cropper are going to be in the running for a year or two.....depending on where we are then, and Boruc has had no chance to prove himself properly yet.

I'm sure he, too would like a stronger defence in front of him.

** even the world's best keeper can't do everything single-handed. When Saints signed England World Cup goalie Peter Shilton in 1982.....our defence leaked in 18 goals in the first 7 games (!)

.....Mind you, we played 5 of the top 6 clubs in those opening fixtures ...(if that scenario sounds familiar?)

Tom will be Man Utd bound but Phillips would be a good buy but im not sure where he'd fit in with Ramirez , lallana, lambo upfront and his obsession in playing JRod anywhere just to recoup some money back

You can consider my opinion to be pointless if you wish; nevertheless it is my opinion.

Gonna do anything about wild-saint's abuse breaking the rules you are supposed to be upholding ?

oh dear crying an whinnying like a girl. 2 separate infractions for the same insult. Well done mods, great work. I take it you forgot about the blantant trolling being against the rules as well? chuffing spineless

Doesn't quite work like that. If you insult someone the same way 5 times, it doesn't count as one offence.

As for your first sentence, I think you're both guilty of that in all honesty. I don't know why you let someone you've never met in a different country rile you up like this.
