39th Premier League game abroad

What ever happened about this? I know the suggestion was (rightly so IMO) met with widespread criticism, but I seem to remember them saying the idea would be reassessed a few years down the line?

Obviously when this news came out a few years ago it didn't seem like it would ever effect us, but now (if we stay up), who knows? If there was, which Premier League team would you like to see us play for a 3rd time in the season, and where?

I wouldn't mind seeing us play Wigan again, in Namibia.

No, this idea needed to die.

Not only is it utterly insulting to the season ticket holding fans but the way they would decide who plays who will be utterly open to allegations/occurences of unfair fixture generation. (E.g. Saints and Norwich need to with the last game to stay up, Norwich get already relegated Reading and we are against Chelsea....)

What if you did it by design so it was exciting?

In your example there, make Saints play Norwich again. Same sort of thing with close run things on European spots, etc.

They don't necessarily have to put fixtures out for all 20 teams. Just do the ones that matter.

I'm not a fan of a 39th fixture anyway, tbh - but I can see ways to make it viable.

Then it would still be a corruption of fair competition.

It would then essentially be creating a final game 'play-off' type situation that may not have any impact based on the points gaps and respective league position after 38 games.

Whichever way you look at it, it is simply a money earner that would serve to undermine the league's credibility.

The bit I was most hostile to was the 39th game aspect. Not playing (occasional) games abroad.

The NFL have developed their popularity in the UK via the Wembley game. It's not an extra game, it's a team surrendering home advantage (usually, a pretty weak team).

If something like this ever happens, it will coincide with a breakaway elite premier league.

Reduce the division to 10-12 "elite" teams.

Everyone plays everyone at home, away and on "neutral" ground, which will allow for a Premier League world tour. The money would be insane as promoters/cities/stadia compete to host the glamour fixtures.

Probably no promotion or relegation either.

End of football as we know it.

I can see that man utd v man city, arsenal v spurs, liverpool v chelsea would be massive abroad

but would anyone really want to watch saints v norwich, wigan v stoke, reading v west brom

To be honest if they were played in China, Japan or the like, they would sell out whoever's playing. It would be the Premier League experience, they would be going for, not necessarily the teams, similar to the NFL games at Wembley.

Agreed, but it would work if it was the first game of the season that was played abroad.

Not sure I agree with this.

If, for sake of argument, Saints were offered $10m to play one game a season in Tokyo or Shanghai rather than St Mary's. I'd take it.
