Wayne Bridge

I suspect we were 'busy' trying to secure other potential left back targets, Buttner for one, whilst Bridge was in talks at Brighton.

We certainly missed a trick. Bridgey would have come back in a shot if we'd shown an interest in a loan deal. Hindsight is a wonderful thing though - didn't expect Foxy to set the prem alight, but i certainly didn't anticipate him being this far out of his depth.

Agree

A Brighton ST holder at work tells me they are paying 10K of his 80K a week salary while on loan there.
Having had to play Yoshida at left back and put Clyne there we really should have gone for him. But it's only with hindsight that you realise a solid defence is needed in the premiership.....!

Didn't realise he was at Brighton now. Looks like we missed a trick there, still plenty of quality, and a far superior defender to Fox.

Bet he is not now! Granted Fox is not great at PL level and we did try to get a better LB in but failed, however Fox currently is better than WB. Why else is he at the bird shi.tt.ers and not at a higher club?

BTW - just shows the unpredictable nature of professional footballers – not that many years ago, there was nothing to choose between WB and AC as to the best England LB, but now they are worlds apart – so what happened? Whatever you think of them, you really have to hand it to the true professionals that maintain the highest of standards throughout their entire careers (Giggs, Bally etc.)

The question that follows is should fox be at a higher club than the bird ****ters? I'm not convinced.

Bridge would have been that experienced premiership quality that we needed.

Not good enough for us anymore, according to many of the experts on here.

The fact he has played all his career in the Prem was irrelevant apparently.

Nope, we were always going to be much better off with Danny one season for Burnley who got relegated Fox :)

Taking Bridge would have been a 50/50 gamble he was shockng when on loan in the premier, However going to brighton and playing every week he is getting back to form. I think his loan is only up till january. He would be a good sqaud player. However the Premier league is very dfferent to Championship.

He would have been a million times better than our current options.

There's a reason why so many PL teams have turned down Bridge and he's playing in the championship

I expect the money is a massive factor, goes to Chelsea plays well gets stalked by Cashley Cole learns he can get a monster wage just to train, WB happy his agent is happy, clubs come knocking possibly but don't come up with the weekly wage to tempt him away. Man city rock up with a nice contract with nice money why not move on for another 4 years of security. Again he becomes a bench warmer then just a trainer on £80k a week, teams come knocking but why move on if you are guaranteed £80k for the next X years to stay where you are and they ain't prepared to pay that kind of money. Probably also seen his best mate Beattie just fizzle out, and thinks that will happen to me so lets just ride the wave I am on.

I would imagine the drive he had with us has dimmed, through being benched for so long and going out on loan on full pay just breaks the tedium. It certainly would be interesting if he did turn up back at Saints as romantically you would hope it might just re kindle the fire.

No idea if true, but rumours at the time suggested Man City would subsidise his wages only if Bridge went to a Championship club; any Premier League club taking him on loan would have had to pay his wages in full with no contribution from City. If true, it would explain why no PL teams were prepared to stump up for his £80K per week wage, including us.

Plausible explanation, of course...

I was shot down like a lead balloon for uttering such a profanity just a few short months ago. I don't recall many stepping up to the mark to back me up. All change now it seems.

Double his wages and bring Bridgey back to SMS in January. Him and an experienced CB to assist and rebuild Yoshida's confidence which I suspect will be shot by then, and we'll be home safe.

He's on £80K a week as it is. And you wonder why people didn't follow your logic before?

I don't back you up. He's been counting his money for half a decade, and a couple of games in the second tier doesn't change a thing.

And as for "double his wages".....Jesus H. Christ.

He was average at best in the NPC. It was clear to everyone bar whoever deals with our transfers that we needed a LB for this season... and two CB's.

You want to pay him £160k a week?

People are raving about him not after a few good performances in the NPC as if it proves he is still quality - are you forgetting that Fox was one of the best fullbacks in the same league last year?

Pretty sure he means double his wages from the rumoured 10k from Brighton.

Yeah, maybe we should just ignore the £70K that Man City are throwing in on top of that. Its quite a clever approach to transfers actually, surprised no-one has suggested it before. Why wouldn't Bridge throw away £60K a week to join us?

I expect he meant get him on loan from city and double the wages that Brighton are giving him.

That still doesn't make sense; why would City continue to supplement him £70K a week to allow us to pay him an extra £10K a week? In any case, I'll repeat what I wrote earlier.
