Who is your second team?

Saint Charlie

Sheffield wed for me but Norwich is a club I have always considered close to saints. Promoted to div 1 together in the 60's and both achieved double promotions this decade. Ted bates came from Norwich as did ron Davies ted mcdougall Phil Boyer. 'M sure there were others. Surman and Channon went the other way. And of course we've ad some cracking games with them. Similar sort of family, survive on a shoe string culture.

Not my second team, I don't even like them really, but I took the kids along to see Bompey v Dagenham & Redbridge in the FA Cup 1st round yesterday. Alright it was typical lower league fare to be honest - more effort than skill mostly - but the game reminded me of what good value (£12 for the 3 of us) and fun there is to be had from watching a bunch of honest players win a football match.

I'm not about to join "Eddie Howe's Barmy Army" for one minute you understand, but compared to paying more than £500 this season for the privileged of seeing our assemblage of incompetent defenders fail miserably, watching this game was actually a enjoyable experience. So hateful as the prospect of relegation is, I must admit it won't be the end of the world.

PS - Bournemouth's wide left No7 (Pugh) - a bit one footed but no worse than Puncheon or De Ridder methinks.

Saints are the only team I care about.

Though I enjoy going up to Rangers. Get along with a few of their lads quite well, Glasgow is a top night out and the atmosphere at Ibrox for the Old Firm is rather special. I've been lucky enough to do Celtic away with Rangers and that was also something else - just a bit of a barmy city really.

Been to watch HSV a couple of times as well. Again a top bunch of lads, Hamburg is a top night out and you can't beat bouncing around on a terrace.

Adelaide United but have a big soft spot for Wycombe Wanderers as they were my local team for many years. Went to see them play when non-league when they played at Loakes Park with the sloping pitch and saw them promoted to the FL under Martin O'Neil.

Silly to say people who have a second team know nothing about football. If I didn't watch my local team, Brann, then I wouldn't get to any matches, surely then I'd know far less. I don't have the same passion for Brann as I do for saints, but I support them as my local team without any detriment to my supporting saints. People who like football will want to watch football and if you see another team regularly, of course you become interested in them.

But if anyone asks me who I support I say saints and wouldn't even think to mention Brann.

Partick Thistle. For reasons unknown to anyone I discovered a Partick Thistle shirt at a jumble sale at the Avenue Church opposite the Cowherds when I was about 10 in 1978. It fitted me too. I was very proud of it playing at Portswood Rec.

Ukraine sounds an awful place to live at the moment; Yanukovych seems to be modelling himself on Stalin.

Isnt Kharkiv prison where Tymoshenko is being held in hiedous conditions ?

Back to the question. For reasons that I have never been able to fathom, I have always looked out for Crystal Palace results.

Turkish[/color];1516610]nothing says i know f*ck all about football than someone who says "and my second team is ............"

Soon to be mine too mate (I'm moving there in January). Is there any Saints fans groups or anything there?

Currently though it's Besiktas - my missus is Turkish

To tell the two apart, one has one and the other is one. [joke]

  • 1 month later...

Always had a soft spot for Bilbao, started by Englishmen, play in red and white and have a great ethos in their Basque only policy.

I remember going to a departemnt store in Spain a few years back and routing around amongst the hundreds of barca and real madrid shirts to find a Bilbao one.

I guess Liverpool.

I watched them outplaying every European side at Anfield during the 1970's.. .and winning the title almost every season into the bargain and the great players they had then.

Ian Callaghan on the wing, St.John, Hunt, the (young) Keegan, Steve Heighway, Ian Rush, John Aldridge, Emlyn Hughes (the 1970's version of Steven Gerrard) ..what a great side they were...dare we forget ....Jimmy Case.

I'd support them every time - except when they play us ......

You mean scoring on the break and defending via successful backpassing to the keeper time and time again hence the jibe Liverpool backpassed their way to European glory.

In England? Tottenham, I suppose, for no legitimate reason. I also like Bournemouth because of their proximity.

In Spain? Team Messi, although I do feel like a dirty front-runner saying that.

I still haven't found an MLS team that grabs me. I've been to a few RedBulls games but that's more as a casual observer. My first MLS game was at Columbus Crew vs San Jose Earthquakes with a young Landon Donovan. But no one wins my loyalty yet.

Other sports:

Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Indians

Cleveland Cavaliers

Maidenhead United, The Magpies; one of the oldest clubs and grounds (York Road) in the country. Who can forget the FA cup tie against Aveley, the "we hate Slough Town" chants. Featured in 'Fever Pitch', no less.

Apart from that I'd turn out to watch my women's team even if I wasn't playing. But local Italian teams: Juventus is obviously out (supported by plastics) so Torino would be my nearest league team.

It's just not the same though as supporting Saints, difficult to explain as it is.

Aalborg BK. Never been good at managing their finances, but they've taken 3 championships off the Copenhagen clubs over the last 20 years or so. Always good fun - they play entertaining football and one week they'll outplay the league leaders only to collapse in spectacular fashion the next week. Great value for money ;)

Strangely enough they are only a distant second to Saints...

They often reckon you end up supporting the 1st team you see play, or the first club shirt you get.

Well my favourite Uncle took me to my first ever game at Fartton Krap as he is a Portsmouth fan. Why is he my favourite Uncle you say? Well the 2nd game he took me to was at the Dell under floodlights, which blows that 1st theory out the water, and shows that even a P*mpey fan can have moments of clarity (although he'll never admit it).

My first shirt was a Bournemouth one - the old black & red stripes which I thought looked pretty cool. Don't know what happened to that (I think I was about 12), but I still have every Saints shirt I ever bought cluttering up the place, which I guess also blows the 2nd theory out of the water :)

There's about half a dozen scores I always used to look for. Rangers because, even though I am not religious, I hate Catholics (I don't actually hate anyone but it seemed a good reason at the time), Stenhousmuir because my other Uncle followed them as his 2nd team for some unknown reason, Pompey because I knew how much my Uncle gets annoyed when they lose, Newport County (Wales, not the IOW!) because I happened to catch a game there once which was the Welsh Cup final and it seemed bizarre that a then Div 3 club would be playing in europe. Can't say I have any real allegiance for Australian teams although I have been to see the Brisbane Roar on odd occasions. I'll also try and look up the scores of any team that has a player with a Saints connection. So that gives me plenty to do on a Sunday morning :)

For some reason though, I do still have a genuine soft spot for Bournemouth, even though the only player I can name is probably Lee Barnard who can't even get in the team at the moment!

Having moved around a bit as a kid I didn't really have a firm team til I was about 12/13.

My grandad took me to QPR for my first ever game (a lifelong R's fan, rest his soul) against Swindon in the 96/97 season. Once his health started to go, and he couldn't handle a proper stadium, he used to take me to Maidenhead games, as he lived just up the road in Taplow.

Funny really, following my Dad moving to Southampton, my first Saints game was shortly after....that 6-3 against Utd. I have to admit, I was only really taken as I was a bit Beckham mad back then (ok I still love the guy). Over the new few years I saw a lot more of Saints and grew to love the club. It seemed to make sense to support the team I actually saw live the most.

If things had turned out different, I probably could have ended up a QPR fan. Prior to Flavio, ernie, warlock, Hughes, fernandes, Harry etc.. I always had a soft spot for them. Can't stand them now mind.

We weren't promoted to div 1 with them. We were relegated with them in 73/74 and our two most recent relegations. If fact, we have not been relegated without Norwich for over 50 years. Spooky. And therefore good to see them doing ok this season.
