View From The Top Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 I bet all of those people saying the Prem is crap wouldn't be saying that if we were 4th or something. It is understandable to be disappointed with constantly losing. Bollo.xs. Plenty have been saying it for a while. Some of us were caught between wanting us to go up as it meant success but not actually wanting to be in EPL for the reasons already stated. alpine_saint Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 If we were relegated, having behind us from the summer a good transfer window that prepared the squad for the PL properly, a good pre-season of team, tactics and formation preparation, and basically done everything we can to avoid relegation, I could heartily live with it when it happens. Suffice to say, I am p*ssed off and angry that we have thrown away the PL place we have fought so hard for, because we have done NONE of those things. buctootim Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 In a perfect world we wouldnt have got promoted last season. We'd now be tearing up the championship with a better balanced team and more prepared for the PL in August 2013. I dont want us to get relegated and i do think we'll avoid it - but if it does happen its not a killer blow.

sadoldgit Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 It is not a question of us being 4th and everything would be great. As FF says, the chances of a "smaller" club ever coming runners up as we did under Big Mac are non existant now. That was the difference. And anyone who says the football is beter now obviously never saw George Best, Rodney Marsh et all strut their stuff. Real men playing in terrible conditions and having the crap kicked out of them without all of the theatrics. It is a pantomime now in comparison. sadoldgit Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 Er, we spent £1m on Lambert in Football League Division One and TREBLED his wages - a move no club could match. It is the very equivalent of spending £12m in the Premiership - if not worse! Which is still peanuts. At that point the most we ever spent on a player was £4m and that was years ago. You say no club could match. Really? We can't match what Chelsea and man City spend - it is all relative.

The Kraken Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 its peanuts to us....at the time..ask dagenham and rednridge...or bristol rovers if it was peanuts That's not really relevant to the original point being made; which was that us paying £1M for a player in L1 was worse for our finances that spending £12M for one in the PL. It suited us when money delivered us two promotions. And now we're tiny fish in the money pond, money is the problem! What a lot of hypocritical old b o llo x. I didn't watch the last day of the last Premiership season and think anything other than WOW! It was quite simply breathtaking. And in between was some incredible football and some woeful stuff. If you want to support a team with no ambition and no desire to improve themselves and the level of football played, there are plenty of non-league teams who would LOVE your support. If you want to watch professional football, accept that your team is aiming to be better than they are (no matter who they are). Money didn't kill football in this country any more than money killed Olympic cycling - or was that delivered by chance and a wave of Harry Potter's wand? But 30 years ago we could win the league without rich owners, 20 years ago with our current owners we could have won the league. Today we don't have a chance even with rich owners - that is why money has ruined football. It is no longer a competition other than for 5 or 6 clubs. The Prem might be flashier with fancy foreign players and sterile shiny stadiums but the football is no better, English clubs were the best in Europe long before the money turned up. We will probably never see players as good as Keegan, Channon and Le Tiss playing for Saints for more than 1 or 2 seasons again.

The truth is this. In the twenty years before the Premier League, these teams won the league: Derby, Leeds, Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Everton - Liverpool won the league 11 times. In the twenty years of post-Premiership football, these teams have won the league: Manchester United, Blackburn, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City - United have won the league 11 times. Liverpool (with the Moore's money) were easily the waelthiest club in the land. By contrast, Manchester United have not been the wealthiest since 2004. So while you could argue money has changed football, has it? Really? Isn't it just the degree of money? And what's different in football than say Formula One? Red Bull are World Champions by money. Before them Ferrari were the same. All sport is surely about money these days? Ever since the advent of professionalism. People herald the Olympics as grand example of where money doesn't matter. Only it does. Because we would be nowhere without the massive sums of money spent by the BOC courtesy of the Lottery. 30 years ago you couldn't win the league without rich owners, 20 year ago Jack Walker bought the league at Blackburn. rooney Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 Nobody in their right mind would not want us to stay in the Premiership surely?. All those that were on the pitch at the last home game of the season last season will agree. A couple of wins and we shall all be happy again. Maybe the fairplay system regarding turnover and wages will help but I agree with most on here ,that the Premiership has been ruined with big money, Sky TV has a lot an an answer for over this. Wimbledon couldn't do today what they did in the 80's, there is no way we could get a 2nd place finish in the top tier like we did in the 80's. Sky's money has distorted the whole game and I just find it so dull. The fact that teams like Everton, Spurs and Newcastle think getting 4th place is some sort of amazing achievement shows what a boring, pointless league it is. Sidney Fudpucker the 3rd Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 if you truly mean and believe it when you say 'not a chance' why not just withdraw all your money and stake it on us going down, much better than the interests at the banks. not even a gamble, not a chance = 100% chance of collecting come end of the season, heck maybe earlier if bookmakers decide to pay out early. I bet against Saints every week. I had Bale to score against us last week at 13/2. It's easy money.

I don't find football any less enjoyable now than I did when I was 12 and watching us finish second. And now, thanks to Sky, I can actually watch games I couldn't ever have thirty years ago. SNSUN Posted 8 March, 2013 Share Posted 8 March, 2013 I voted no, based on us throwing points away, and at present I still wouldn't change that. Our saving grace this season will be having three teams worse than us over the course of the season. People now are saying QPR have a chance. No, they got a result against us but that doesn't mean they'll win their last 10. I can still see them going down, they've been awful this season. Villa too risked a lot on young lower league players, and Benteke aside they've been poor too. I still think they'll go down and regret their policy (but will perhaps do the best of any of the relegated sides next season.). For the other spot, it's us, Reading or Wigan and from what I saw of Reading vs Wigan, I just think Reading are short on quality and that will be their downfall. We have been very fortunate this season that our 'lower league' players have stepped up, Lallana, Lambert, Puncheon, Cork, Schneiderlin and Fonte and that is why we'll stay up. Reading's, largely, have not. We'll pick up the results we need, but at the moment I would keep my vote as a No, as it is THAT close to call. It may well go down to the last game of the season. (Where I think we'll do Stoke if needed.)
