Cascadia Saint Posted 30 October, 2012 Author Share Posted 30 October, 2012 Statement from Disney here: http://thewaltdisneycompany.com/disney-news/press-releases/2012/10/disney-acquire-lucasfilm-ltd Choice quote: We plan to release the first new Star Wars film in 2015, and then plan to release one film every two to three years. These films will be released and distributed as part of our target slate of 8-10 live-action films per year, and will augment Disney's already strong creative pipeline for many years to come. Lucasfilm has not released a Star Wars film since Revenge of the Sith in 2005. However, adjusted for inflation, as well as growth in both international box office and 3D, we estimate the three most recent Star Wars films would have averaged about $1.5 billion in global box office in today's dollars. This speaks to the franchise's strength, global appeal and the great opportunity we have in the film business.
pap Posted 31 October, 2012 Share Posted 31 October, 2012 Hooray. George Lucas is no longer driving Star Wars! Perhaps it can be good again.

What the hell....? My sentiments exactly. The truth is, Lucas has always has the story lines for Episode VII to IX in the can, but hasnt had the motivation and energy to do them. Provided Disney doesnt tinker with the scripts, this should prove interesting. Never thought we would get to see them though. Lucas is still creative consultant - considering his reputation for control-freakery over the Star Wars canon, I see the potential for massive friction ahead. But yes, it will be interesting to see if a new production/direction team can breath new life into the franchise (though episodes I to III are nowhere near as bad as people make out)
percy windham Posted 31 October, 2012 Share Posted 31 October, 2012 I think this can only be good news. The franchise has run and run in other mediums, so why can't we have more films? Lassetter and Kennedy aren't idiots, they'll be good films I'm sure.
dubai_phil Posted 31 October, 2012 Share Posted 31 October, 2012 Well, Pixar produce great entertainment under the Disney umbrella, but for Star Wars reboot? 4 words to them - Don't F\/ck it up
pap Posted 31 October, 2012 Share Posted 31 October, 2012 Lucas shouldn't be let anywhere near the new Star Wars films.
alpine_saint Posted 31 October, 2012 Share Posted 31 October, 2012 Well, Pixar produce great entertainment under the Disney umbrella, but for Star Wars reboot? 4 words to them - Don't F\/ck it up Seems to me Disney have just let Pixar carry on as they were. I am assuming Disney are aware of the old chestnut "if it ain broke, dont fix it" and will do the same with Lucasfilm. Concerned about Lucas's role in the next trilogy though. The bloke cant leave alone, the worst example being Darth Vaders "Noooooooooooo!!" in the Blu-Ray version of ROTJ.
pap Posted 2 November, 2012 Share Posted 2 November, 2012 The reason that Disney lets Pixar keep doing what they're doing is because they've consistently managed good commercial and critical results. Lucas managed the commercial of the Star Wars empire very well, but was a disaster critically in later years. Even Star Wars feels extremely ragged compared to the two films that followed it. Lucas was literally a victim of his own success. The merchandising deal he cut made him ongoing residual income, so much so that when it came to make the prequels, he had complete creative control. We all saw the results. The prequels were horrific. If you're in any doubt, go look at http://redlettermedia.com and give yourself something of a film education at the same time. The next Star Wars film does not need George Lucas, or indeed want him. This is the man that thinks that the way you do aliens is to give them all stupid accents that border on offensive. This is the man that gave the world Jar Jar Binks and the confused Oedipal mess of a "love story" in Attack of the Clones. The shame of it is that there are bits of those films that are utterly superb. Problem is that it's all held together by the jism that George refers to as "dialogue and characterisation". Disney would be off their heads to let him have any input on that side,
alpine_saint Posted 7 November, 2012 Share Posted 7 November, 2012 Apparently Harrsion Ford wants to reprise his character, after saying for decades he wouldnt be interested. Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammil are apparently considering a reprisal of their roles, though considering the state of them nowadays I am sure thats been simply prompted by the media and their own self-image. The only way it'd work is if they made them senior figures in the New Republic, which is pretty much what they did in the Zahn books (closest thing to an ep VII, VIII and IX ) except that Luke was normally off doing Jedi stuff. Ahhhh yes, the Zahn books, especially the Thrawn Trilogy. Who knows if they will form the basis of the scripts. Personally would love to see a big screen depiction of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Personally would love to see a big screen depiction of Grand Admiral Thrawn. They should try to incorporate Thrawn no matter what. Extremely good antagonist. The Rommel of the remnants of the Empire.
