Actually, the alleged Skate was correct. The "away firms" were always in the Milton. These were the days before all tickets and segregation. If you wernt attending matches in the 60s and 70s dont show up your ignorance.

.

Are you ******....there is so much wrong with your post it proves you are a skate.

I have been going since 1967.....first away game was Skates 2 Saints 5

Feb 1966. my first away game too. What exactly is wrong with his post?

Yeah, before the seats went in the MR had both sets of fans in the Milton, i recall games with Newcastle especially as they were crazy and Chelsea, these were the bad old days I guess but i was just thinking about Dougal today, i expect he is dead ??

Alive and well the last I heard (about a year ago) and living in Boorley Green.

A friendly piece of advice to the OP;

If, as youre struggling to convince anyone on here, you actually are a Saints fan and just misunderstood, try deleting your account and starting a new one with another username.

If, (as most on here seem to believe,) you are a portsmouth follower on a wind-up, f*ck off and dont come back.

kids box was the Toomers one, most of the fighting was on the steepiest bit of the Milton, so spitting would have had no effect

In the 60's away supporters could come into the Milton Road end and often did. However, at that time most of the away support were in the Archers Road end. Never got involved with Dougal. Seems he was a cult figure to some. Never rated him. I mixed with a lot of tough guys from Weston but never got involved with him

If I have got the right bloke, he drove a blue "peckham" 3 wheeler. He fell asleep on the way back from a Liverpool match and we helped get it out of a ditch. We then helped him push it up some ramps into the back of my transit 6 wheeler. Thewre was about

2-3 feet sticking out the back. I may be the only person you have ever heard of that had one of them in the back of a transit.

He'd just murdered one skate and a pirate.

I like spudgun picture too. I never been to the dell but that's pretty much exactly how i imagined it!

The Dell in pre-Hillsborough days was a proper football ground, open terraces, very few women, segrated kids areas and not many stewards. As long as you didn't hit too many opposition supporters with an axe no-one actually gave a toss what you did between the time you arrived and the time you left, probably because it was too packed to notice anyway. .

My first game was in 1967 against Burnley; Ron Davies scored a hat-trick and Denis Hollywood got the other one; Dave Merrington was playing for Burnley.

As other posters have already stated, in those days, the opposition supporters would often try to ‘take’ the Milton en masse. On these occasions, the police would form a half-hearted line down the terracing in an attempt to segregate the fighting fans with the result that both sets of fans would then end up fighting the police. Back then, all this was simply seen as part of the pre-match entertainment (although often it would continue throughout the match because most of those guys had no interest in the football at all!)

Was Dougal the bloke that always wore a white butcher’s coat?

No that was deaf and dumb Tony who supported Millwall but had soft spot for Saints.

Miltonroader07 if you are going to PM me don't use all capitals as I don't like being shouted at. I am a sensitive little soul and wont respond to your Skate wind up

ooops just did.

Don't fret, it'll probably only be the first PM, I had the same but after that his carer switched capslock off & the rest have been fine and in normal small letters

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who gets frankly bizarre PMs from that nutjob.

In fact, I shouldn't call him that, I'm still not convinced he isn't a bit special and I don't like mocking the afflicted.

Well for one Dougal used to stand at the back of the Milton very near me if anyone was spitting it would of landed on him!

On the rare occasion a firm did get into the Milton they were shepherded usually across to the far left

and no-one would of been able to spit anywhere near them!

One of the only firms that managed it were Glasgow Rangers in the Texaco Cup where there was carnage everywhere.

If my memory is correct the combination cup final against West Ham when they got on The Milton that was fun.

Am I missing something here? Why all the slagging off for the OP?

As said by a few others old enough, late 60's to mid 70's any away team with a reputation would try and take The Milton.

There was no denied entry, just a thin blue line of bobby's to try and keep the 2 mobs apart.

I think Man U with sheer numbers (2 - 5 Best, Charlton etc) and Chelsea (3-5) with sheer thuggery were just about the only teams who totally took behind the goal. Villa in an FA Cup match when The Doc took over them in Div 3 had a big following as well.

It wasn't until mid 70's that police started to insist on away supporters going to The Archers, which resulted in many of our rowdier element following suit to the Archers.

To me as a mere whippersnapper, the name of Dougal conjured up images of him as a very scary psycho of a man as his name was chanted out as they went into battle. Dougal is our leader, Dougal is our leader etc. OB would love it if mobs named their leaders nowadays!!

Not been on much recently so maybe missed obvious Skate connections to MiltonRoader, but some of the crap posted on this thread by people saying his post is a load of bull are way off the mark.

Yeah thinking on that again I certainly remember the Chelsea and Man Utd ones - Birmingham once tried but failed but then resorted to trash Hill Lane

and anyone catching the corporation buses in Landguard Road got pummelled with big boulders.

My memory is fading but none were as bad as Rangers who were even brandishing knives on the terraces which then gave a massive circle round them.

Evil lot.

Well read them properley and you will see why....there was no way they could of spat on the away fans...if you had stood in the boxes you would know that and you would also know

where Dougal stood if you were there!

Then go and read them again if you think its crap then because its clearly explained why...if you knew Dougal then you knew where he stood and you couldnt spit on the away fans from the boxes...it would of hit him!
