Goal 1; 'is this game not a contact sport anymore?' - taking the p*ss now;

Goal 2; 'well, comical...' Unfair as had Jose not slipped he would have booted the ball clear like Gallas did all second half.

At least no controversial game deciding official mistakes to debate in our game; the only thing the ref got right was booking their left back.

I think it's naive to think that the goals we let in weren't easily defendable tbh. Someone should have been on Bale for the first goal and the second goal was just our defence asleep. We can take a lot from the game but we have to move on and stop complaining when someone analyses us fairly.

I am not taking it personally, or actually complaining about the analysis, which was fair (although I would have liked to have seen the header chance JRod had), I just felt the comment about Jose was unjust as he clearly slipped. Nor did i say the ref made a game changing decision, just that he was poor generally. But as we all know, when you are at the bottom, slips, own goals, deflections, niggly refs, all these things go against you. And I like the fact they highlight the space we leave when playing too narrow. Yoshida cannot tackle or score from 3 yards.

I thought that, for once, they were fairly reasonable. Both goals were preventable, so they should be analysed as such, and we put Spurs under a lot of pressure in the last half an hour or so, and they highlighted that as well.

Very much agree with this, they did the first half of this is the problems and how it was preventable in the first half, then covered the second half of well this is why htey are a lot better, just need to do that over 90 mins.

Not really a kick in the teeth like a after Arsenal of they are just going down playing like this.

So you're not complaining about the analysis, other than the analysis you're complaining about in your first post?, ie Alan Hansen questioning if the game was a non contact sport (where at the same time as saying this, he showed Spurs players running with the ball and our players not wanting to go near them?), oh and the bit where he referred to us letting in a goal as comical (where at the same time he showed Spurs players given too much space, our keeper doing a comedy save and Fonte slipping over? ok, I see what you are saying....actually no I don't?

I thought Hansen was pretty complementary about us really, especially our second half performance.

For most of the first half Spurs players were allowed to pick the ball up deep in their own half and run unchallenged to our goal area. He is right with the "contact sport" remark, cos we weren`t making any.

Which was particularly strange considering the number of free kicks the ref was giving them. It was as if we just had to breathe on them for Mason to blow his ****ing whistle :wave:

The thing I've started picking up on with our defending is how infrequently we're defending facing the right way, and how often we get caught shorthanded - watching other matches over the weekend the majority of sides have at least 4 behind the ball, and that becomes 8 or 9 outfielders if the ball isn't moved quickly by the attacking team. We never seem to have more than 6 or 7 back there in positions to influence play, and we ALWAYS seem to be chasing back down the pitch and out of control.

This is obviously heightened when the opposition breaks quickly down the wings (we've had that problem since League One), and the starting positions of BOTH our full backs being somewhere around half way every time we turn over possession. I'd expect one of them to be forward, but we seem to get both of them caught up the pitch. Lallana was required to do a ton of tracking back again yesterday, which remains one of his weaknesses.

The one thing the second half proved is that attack is still our best form of defence. Nice to see Mayuka show what he can do as well, pinned Bale back, made some defensive tackles (well, at least one) and created loads. The goal won't hurt Rodriguez either, his confidence clearly improved after the goal.

Thought he was spot on, no real pressing first half, too easy for spurs to waltz through and the second goal was quite comical but more unfourtunate because Fonte slipped.

This seems to be a recurring problem for our defenders, Clyne's continually falling on his arse.

It looked like, on tv, that Jose jumped over the initial shot and then slipped running back to the goal.

Could/should he not have cleared it first time?

To me on tv and from my view at the Chapel/Itchen corner (so right in front) the ball passed just behind him first, it was when he tried to change his direction that he slipped and lost that precious fraction. Unlucky in an otherwise fine game by both him and Yoshida who I think get their game together much better than Hooiveld and Jose did anytime until now.
