Saints 1-2 Spurs // Post-Match Views

All we have to do is just stop being overawed by the occasion till we are 2-0 down and then suddenly switch it on and we'll be a mid table prem team (then again so are Spurs).

Also Puncheon out. If he gets more starts after that performance he has to be sucking someone off that's high up in the club as we looked miles better the moment he got his useless self off the pitch. Does't need a taxi out of the club, just a few bags of cements so we can chuck him off a bridge to make sure he doesn't come back.

Defensively generally better, Maya made a lot of very good tackles in the second half, the the second goal was a shambles. Only one shambles is an improvement from the 5-10 we've had playing Jos this season.

I don't think he'll be able to, he's a short full-back. Much like Rafael V Lambert, if he comes up against a player with a few inches on him AND a good leap, he's got no hope. His best option in those situations is to let them have it and try to put himself in the way of the goal.

Clyne was in a standing position,Bale had the momentum it was always going to be Bales ball

It's not "game over" just because he's short - he could and should have done the next-best thing, which is play "spoiler" by jumping back into Bale rather than giving him the completely free header. That's what Rafael did but at least he did it - and he could even have ended up getting a free kick for his efforts.

And my read was that Clyne was slow to react rather than flat-footed (ball watching), and he allowed Bale to come across the front of him.

Sure, he wasn't in an easy situation but he has to do better or we're going to leak a lot more goals just like that one. I like him but he still has a lot to learn.

So now we have to put up with long ball football and kick and rush... and still we can't get points. Whatever happened to the mantra of "sticking to our football principles".

Not only does the man talk to himself in the mirror, he now writes in metaphors about sailing in rough waters and stormy seas ahead! FFSGAG!

One of us seems to be stark raving bonkers, I don't think it's me?

Now I'm convinced we'll never turn this around under the present regime - it is devoid of new ideas; everyone knows that doing the same old thing in the same old way always leads to the same old result.

Postive from the game i really think Ben Reeves looks pacey and has a great 1st touch, i would happly have him at LB, i think he can make that his spot, also Fonte had a good game, not brilliant but something to build on, same as Yoshida both at times looked very good tackling heading and positioning, there passing was slightly poor at times, but that can be worked on.

Why the fook wasn't Luke Shaw playing?

There are a few decent Championship jobs going at the moment. Maybe it would be better for both parties if the chairman and manager sit down and agree a parting of the ways. Nigel deserves a decent pay-off for getting us up 2 leagues. But honestly, I think there are other managers out there capable of getting a lot more from our team.

I grow tired of your mantra, the next time I see you, I'm going to punch you square in the b*llocks.

4-4-2 and we were ****. When we went to 4-3-3 we ran Spurs ragged. Mayuka made a huge difference nit only offering us something in attack but penning them back. The side followed his lead and we were camped in their half and really should have got a draw.

Boruc 5 - slow off his line for the second goal, very little else to do

Fox 3 - tough assignment, but yet another game where he did next to nothing defensively and just as little offensively. When playing on Adkins side of the pitch it becomes obvious how crap he is and is rightly substituted

Joshida 4 - Felt the first goal came because he just didn't put any pressure on Defoe at at. So easy for him to collect the ball, dance inside and lay it off. Get tight and make it tough when he turns inside. Terrible distribution, which is important as he seems to be the guy responsible to bring the ball out from the back, time after time he put us in trouble or gave it away. Far from convinced. I think I would prefer Jos to be honest.

Fonte 7 - thought he had a decent game, one poor header when he could have chested it down apart.

Clyne 5 - ball watched for the first goal. Very very poor. You have got to at least try and out Bale off. How easy was it for Bale to head that goal compared to Yoshida's effort later challkenegd by Gallas. This sort of error is killing us. Decent second half keeping Bale quiet. But maybe more to do with the lack of service to him than what Clyne did.Got to cut these errors out as he has a great all round game.

Lallana 7 - huge workrate, but all defensively in first half. Got caught dozing which could have hurt us badly. It didn't. When moved into the middle he ran the show. A real threat and they couldn't handle him.

Davis 6 - terrible first half. Just horrid. Excellent second. Could not understand why he was subbed. We were totally on top at that point so no reason to other than fresh legs, but we've lost momentum several times doing that so concerned that Adkins has not learned his lesson.

Morgan 6 - pretty much the same as Davis. Great second half. Boy is he quick. Out ran Bale in second half. That took some doing. Shame that thunderous drive didn't go in

Puncheon 5 - less comfortable in the 4-4-2. Kept coming inside, which become predictable. Got caught in possession once and seemed to just give up. He then lost his bottle, choosing to boot the next ball rather than get it down and play. He wasn't bad, he just didn't offer any threat which meant their fullback was free to attack

Lambert 4 - did nothing first half apart from a great defensive header. Struggled to win any of the lofted punts to him. Did a little bit more in the second, but reputation kept him on the pitch. Did chase hard though in second half to put the defenders under pressure.

Rodriguez 7 - worked the channels hard in first half but service dried up and he couldn't be expected to beat three. The goal just filled him with confidence and he seemed to be everywhere for a period. Particularly impressed with his tracking of Lennon one occasion. Probably went unnoticed, but essential.

Mayuka 8 - outstanding. Turned the game on its head. Pace, tricks, some great turns. Every time I see him he impresses me. Tore their left back a new one.

Guly 6 Were the shouts of Guly or boos when he came on? Not sure. He did pretty well again, following on from a great display at West Ham. He usually does well in CM, that's where he is comfortable.

Reeves 7 - Did more defensively in 15 minutes than Fox has all season. Great first touch, looks confident and got tight to Lennon. Lennon was snuffed out. Not sure he has the pace to play at fullback but he looks a brilliant prospect to me.

All very true............The problem is Adkins never learns the problems and Fox will play again next game too don't worry about that. Adkins just doesn't seem to learn.

It's becoming very irritating now........

What else is he bloody well supposed to do exactly? We haven't got any left backs. He is our only real experienced left back. Until January, like it or not, he's as good as we have in that position.

Not sure what he's supposed to learn from that. I'm all from debating criticism, and getting peoples points of view, but I can't be arsed to read tosh like that.

true not many could !

Reeves did ok when came on, bit more experience so maybe give him a chance ?

He's not a left back though, he's an attacking midfielder. He started off as a left back, but he had a few weaknesses in that position, so the coaching staff turned him into an attacking midfielder.

In a real emergency, maybe, but he's not the answer at left back.

It might well come up in the end, when we run out of dates for our season to start. The first season at SMS, our season started in November.

Good point. Right now I'm disappointed with the results but I do enjoy going to SMS. It was a good day out. Crap first half. Sound second. Good football in places from both sides

Weston not wishing to state the obvious but they are 2,3,4,5,6,7 because they have beaten us, Three points at this stage is worth several places in the league.

Take your point though the stagger has to unwind at some point and it is the games against those around us which will count in the long run. There are a possible 42 points from Norwich, Reading, QPR, Swansea, Stoke, Villa, and Sunderland. Plus any points from these teams will mean they stay below us or not as far above. We've played just one game from this lot and have maximum points.... we'll be fine :)

I do wonder if the team has the grit and or passion to beat these teams but we'll just have to wait and see. I guess Swansea on the 10th will be the first real marker.

I think we're closer now to knowing what our best starting line-up is, but it's taken longer than I expected - only partly due to injuries. Nigel has chopped and changed a fair bit, 'culminating' in the Boruc/Fonte/Jos/Yoshida combo he threw in last week, which still shipped four goals. No wonder we've not developed any consistency - or even any real familiarity.

As Weston said, we have played most of the leading teams, which WHU certainly haven't, but we've also dropped too many points in the other games.

Let's stick with Fonte and Yoshida in the middle at the back, and Mayuka has to start. Then, when Ramirez and Cork are fit again, we have some better options. Like Derry. I'm still not convinced that we can be successful if Schneiderlin and Davis play together.

Well the scoreline was nowhere near as bad as I predicted TBF, however they could have been 4-0 up at half-time. Bales goal can be blamed entirely on Clyne - just too static, ball-watching and not marking his man/area and if that had been Fox there would have been a riot on here. On the subject of Fox, I thought he had a reasonable game - not great, but not bad and Lallana tried to provide cover by busting a gut on a number of occasions.

Yoshi player a blinder - one pen area tackle in particular was world-class. Mayuka was different class and frankly should be one of the first on the team sheet - must be close to Ramirez as one of our best players surely? Davis was far too defensive - he should leave that stuff to Morgan. Guly was OK, but for an attacking CM he is nowhere near Prem class.

The Boruc incident seemed to start when some morons in the Chapel decided it would be a good idea to hurl abuse at him for the 2nd goal and he over-reacted by kicking a water bottle. Yes the fans that abused him are complete knoobs, but he is worse for reacting. Should be dropped for 2 matches at least.

Adkins is probably safe for now, but somehow he needs to get his team to switch on and play throughout the 1st and 2nd half's, how they played in the 2nd half today.

Looking at tonights table we have played teams in 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th and 9th 15th and 17th. Much to early to make a judgement. Let's see where we are when we have played more around us.

They got to those positions as they played us

We will get beat at Leeds and then again at WBA... This place will be full of excuses as people desperately want Nigel to stay. Regardless that we cannot buy a win

A quarter of the season gone... He still doesn't know his best 11... Still unable to play for more than a half and still far too open from the off

How long and how many more defeats does this shambles go on for??

Dare I mention Ryan Dickson?

The reason we haven't seen more of Mayuka is because they were breaking him in gently after a big step up from the Swiss League, disrupted by two international breaks where he headed off to Africa, plus an injury. The next couple of months is his chance to get some continuity, ( just in time to disappear off to the African Cup of Nations!)

Didn't see the game today. From reading the match thread I came to the conclusion that the players are no longer playing for Adkins but then I changed my mind after reading some comments in the 2nd half.

That's how it works around here right?

Yes mate that is exactly how it is....

We only sing when we are winning on here
