alpine_saint Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 Well, until the move to St. Mary's, pretty much every season we nearly did go down. We were perennial relegation candidates at the Dell. Probably easier to believe in the whole BBC bias against us though, I suppose. Have you never noticed it takes them about 10mins to update the score when its our goal, and 30 seconds when its the opposition ? You believe what you want, but the BBC has never had time for us. I still get angry when I think of the radio commentary of the 1979 League Cup Final. At 10 years old, it was the first time I had an inkling that the world isnt fair. mulletsaint Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 But we played differently in the CCC. How exposed these guys are in the PL is criminal, they just have no protection. I had a look at some highlights today, and the ease of which the oppositions front 3 run directly at our back 4 is frightening and it happens game after game. When Nige was on about a ''change of tactics'' in pre-season, I assumed it was a more defensive themed tactic which continued to offer goal threat - but it seems to be the complete opposite, which is crazy. I too, don't believe our CB's would be as bad if they were given a bit of cover and protection, and I think we'd have more points. We'd probably have scored less goals, but I'd be pretty confident in saying that we'd have more points than we do. Ok - They're not world beaters, they're pretty average defenders, and if you're average and are exposed to players like Bale and Cazorla then you are screwed. They need help from the rest of the team. Time for the club to swallow some pride on this failed tactical setup in my opinion. Try it again when we're established and have players that can actually play it. To be honest whatever formations we played in the Championship, this was our Achilles heel last season too. People kept harping on about how Morgan sat deep but on the occasions I saw us, he had almost as much license to get forward as the other midfielders. This meant we were susceptible to being caught on the break and the defence being left exposed. This was exaggerated by the fullbacks providing our width which often left only the two CBs left at the back. I didn't feel this season would have started quite so badly as it has, I thought we might spring a surprise or two early on, but the one thing I believe I was right in, is that we needed someone like Tiote or Frimpong to offer bite in front of the back four. I think that this lack has made our defence look even worse than they are. I also think those individual errors have created a lack of confidence and inherent nervousness which is turning each game into a self fulfilling proficy. We need a good defensive performance / clean sheet almost as much as a win.
disconnect Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 Hope our Sky curse doesnt ruin us again. We must still have one of the worst records in the UK for Sky appearances? There was some stat going round last season, and cant really have been improved this season so far! Got a feeling Gazza will start if the club are annoyed with Boruc for telling the boo boys to shut up. Hope all's good with Boruc as reckon he'll be great once settled, but like Gazza too, who hopefully wont turn out like Bart as second choice for eternity. If Ramirez and Lambert start, we'll win (hopefully)!
Special K Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 Hoping for a win as always, but cannot see anything other than a narrow loss. Valiant effort, but on the wrong end of a 3 - 2. Hope the performance is good and that we can pick up where we left off against Spurs with that decent 2nd half performance.
Wade Garrett Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 (edited) And the wide midfielders are not helping by not defending properly. That's what comes with thinking players can play 'off the cuff' like Lallana. derry, that's not my point. If the defenders didn't keep getting tight to the centre-backs the midfielders wouldn't have to defend a massive area of the pitch. Thing is, it happens all the time, so I reckon that's how they're drilled to play. Edited 5 November, 2012 by Wade Garrett
DrunkenSaint Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 If we play 3 Cm's to stop their midfield i think we might just win but if he continues to play this 4231 with all the attacking players and Jrod out of position, we'll lose. jasoneuelllfanclub Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 -------------Davis-------------- Clyne Fonte Yoshida Fox Davis Morgan Lallana Ramirez Lambert JRod Boruc wont play imo due to ongoing investigation into his conduct. Cork is not match fit and no other quality options so Lallana in more orthodoxed CM role. Ramirez to play in the hole and be main source of creativity. Hopefully using JRod's decent pace to good effect. Should it go t1ts up (likely) then drop JRod into deeper role and have him and Ramirez rotating sides. Colinjb Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 (edited) This will be an entertaining open game. We will score, the return of Ramirez will see to that and I would expect Lambert to start up front. Now, can we avoid leaking in our usual manner? 2-2. VectisSaint Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 Be interesting to see what happens in goal. Saints said they were taking the Boruc incident very seriously, rumours of Gazza going out on loan and not been in the squad for a few weeks, and Davis not being good enough.. Boruc incident was cleared up last week by SFC on Monday, stated categorically that there was no case for Boruc to answer. Gazza loan was a made up rumour which seemed to eminate on this board IMHO Boruc will play and Davis will be on the bench, and thus someone will probably start another rumour about Gazza. Mock all you want, but even Lawrenson's recent "There's no way hes going to Southampton" sneer about Gaston goes a long way to show his (after all, we were originally talking about him) and Auntie's attitude toward us. One of the problems is that the back four doesn't rotate properly and move across as a unit. If it did it would push the full back tight, but would give depth to the defence. On the other side a midfielder should drop back covering outside/in front of the other full back whilst the central midfielders cover in front of the central defenders. Perhaps he was just giving an honest opinion, after all, signing a player of Ramirez' reputation was a bit of coup, so it was a reasonable opinion to hold. The Cat Posted 5 November, 2012 Share Posted 5 November, 2012 I am sure you dont understand. She is standing up for us in the national media, and against that perennial Saints-hater, Mark Lawrenson. I also have no indication that she is a tedious head-in-the-sand happy clapper like those on this site, since to the best of my knowledge she doesnt post. She also is quite cute, has nice norks, and the sort of thighs that will squeeze every last sperm out of your body. I vaguely know her because she lives in my village and do know quite a few of her friends. Never heard her mention football before so to be honest I doubt she has a clue. Although probably no less of a clue than a lot of people on here to be fair.
