there is zero guarantee that adkins will become a decent prem manager..

Same could be said of Pep Guardiola.

Adkins is on a learning curve, he needs to be given a chance. If he's sacked you could see him going somewhere like Ipswich, get them promoted and go on to be a great Prem manager.

You could also see him going to somewhere like Ipswich, do okay for a bit, lose in the play off semis then struggle the next season, get sacked, then end up at Burnley, or Preston or Watford.

Ady Boothroyd was the future once. Paul Jewell was the future once. Phil Brown was the future once. Owen Coyle was the future once. Tony Mowbray was the future once. Paul Lambert was the future last season. Danny Wilson. Ian Holloway. Peter Taylor. Iain Dowie.

Until he has actually done something at this level I don't buy into the idea that Adkins is some wonder manager.

He's basically achieved what many before him have....and if he wasn't Saints manager very few would be conparing him to the Barcelona boss or a future England manager.

He aint Pep frigging Guardiola.

I didn't say he was Pep frigging Guardiola, just responding to Delldays saying he was not GUARENTEED to become a good Prem manager. How can he, no-one can be. Even some good foreign managers fail in the Prem, Guardiola might be sh!t. That's my point, unless he is given the chance we wont find out if he's the next Sir Alex (who also had a poor start in the prem).

It takes some cojones to respond like that to a question at a press conference :toppa: Respect, NA, respect, it's a cut above the usual bland droning and that poem has been an inspiration to many. He didn't quote it exactly, but what the hell, well done Nigel.

That may be true' date=' but its refreshing to see someone, honest enough to be himself - and it was refreshing to see him positive and upbeat ahead of the game. Sometimes in life, just liking someone for who they are and what they bring to the club should be enough. There is more to life , a club and its culture than the constant panic about prem survival that most clubs and tehir miserable managers portray in public.[/quote']

I couldn't agree any more and extremely well put. Thanks

Nailed it. I think some on here got a little over excited by the whole stadium/money/champions league talk that went round. I love the ride, and what would the good times be like without the bad? FWIW, I think we'll go down this season but I'm not going to hang myself over it or suggest that the man who took us down last time and is part of the extreme 'old school' is the answer to all our prayers. In Nigel we trust (apart from his substitutions, and sometimes team selection!!)

Tbh,if I was watching that as a supporter of another side,I would look at our current position and think Christ SFC are going down with a loon like that as gaffer.

qoute and say whatever drivel you like when you are at the top of your game.......but when you are languishing in the drop zone, struggling and showing no sign of improvement, especially in defensive areas (which everyone could foresee before a ball was kicked in anger this season) just give succinct answers and don't make a spectacle of yourself.

i could just about put up with his rediculous repetitive soundbites when we were in a positive position........but not now Nigel please.

get us showing some form and then you can return to whatever you want to spout.

its football....not a political hustings.

Turn it around Nigel, focus on the task not expanding your vocabulary.

He was asked what he said to himself after the WHU game and he recited an inspitational poem. He didn't strip naked live on bbc and start reciting mein kampf! ?

Do you mean Ferguson's first season in the Premier League, when Man U won the title?

Or do you mean Ferguson's first full season in the English top flight, when they finished in second place?

If that is "poor" I think you have unreasonable expectations.

NO Guarrantees - thats a given - what most have seen in him is potential, as they have in many others. The difference is WE finally have someone who has demonstrated that Potential, yet many dont seem willing to give him the time to see if it can be realised... which seems to me to be because too many ae falling into the prem or nothing trap that leads to misery, panic decsion making, and ignoring the values and approach that up until the prem, we were almost all solidly behind... Add to that we also have someone who seeems honest, decent and well a nice bloke, I cant help think that most clubs would welcome the leadership we have, even if some on here dont.

Much rather go for a beer and a chat with someone like Nige, whose enthusiasm is infectious than some miserable sod like Fat Sam, or the baggage handler Redknapp. IF as many fans suggest a club is MORE tha a business, more than its results, but is abouts its fans and its culture, having someone like Nige at the helm creates a far better one IMHO, than some of the othere suggestions... even if that means we have far more of a rollercoaster ride whilst he learns the ropes and gains the necessary experience to stabalise in what is a tough top flight. Supporting a club that is prepared to provide that opportunity and support talent and stick to its ambitious goals/approach is a rare thing and maybe we should be careful that we dont lose sight of such values as egos demand 'top flight at any cost' - I have to date been very supportive of the Don, but any quick decison to replace Nige would erode alot of the faith I have placed in him.

Not if he keeps leaving our best player out.

Keeps leaving out? Only lallana, Morgan, s. davis, fonte and clyne have played more minutes than rickie this season.

People are just over-reacting to him being left out for the West Ham game and pretending that game is somehow representative of the whole season.

I love Nige! Would keep him as manager even if we go down. I genuinely think he will bring us success in the long term.

managers that go down from the prem...very rarely become successful with the same club....it is very hard to turn round what would have been..months of losing..

as we saw last year, momentum is crucial...having a negative momentum is very hard to turn around....

if nigel takes us down..he has little chance of succeeding really again with us

Your comments just reinforce my opinion of Adkins, that it is refreshing to have a manager who is a breath of fresh air, original and individual. I very much doubt whether Adkins feels a desperate need to expand his vocabulary, but you could patently do with getting a bit more perspective and realise that most on here couldn't give a toss about how rival fans feel about our manager. You're one of the most negative posters on here and it therefore comes as little surprise that a little posititivity grates on you.

His first season in the top flight when then finished 11th. Adkins has had 8 games, half of them very hard fixtures.

I bet the Brighton fans are loving this!

I like Adkins, and am very happy with him. A really nice bloke. Sadly niceness doesn't always equate to a good manager. I hope he gets his chance - it'll be a sad day when we part with him.

The Man in the Glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for self

And the world makes you king for a day,

Just go to a mirror and look at yourself,

And see what that man has to say.

For it isn't your father or mother or wife,

Who judgment upon you must pass;

The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life

Is the one starring back from the glass.

He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest.

For he's with you clear up to the end,

And you've passed the most dangerous, difficult test

If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,

And think you're a wonderful guy,

But the man in the glass says you're only a bum

If you can't look him straight in the eye.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years.

And get pats on the back as you pass,

But your final reward will be the heartaches and tears

If you've cheated the man in the glass.

Dale Wimbrow © 1934

Nige made a few alterations to his version. maybe that makes it fit better ? you would have to ask the man in the glass and be true to yourself !

....and?

If comparisons to Guardiola aren't relevant, why are you comparing Adkins with Ferguson from 25 odd years ago?

Why not compare him to, say, Jozef Venglos?

At least he didn't get the guitar out.

I meant watching that was like watching The Office again, cringeworthy. Shows he is under pressure in that he feels he has to learn a poem to avoid answering tricky questions about what's going on on the pitch.

like I said..if we saw poyet or holloway do that..we would have ridiculed him and say glad we dont have an embarrassing manager
