Puncheon

Puncheon's last few games gone something like this...

Get ball

run with ball

cut inside

run into traffic

lose ball

Ok so he had one good game and on fantastic game since I wrote the above, which I still stand by. Hopefully a corner has been turned and he can build on it. I think the question of consistency still remains unanswered, as they say one hot day don't make a summer.

However, well done punch for today's performance and long may it continue.

Aside from the currently ludicrous England suggestion that is a very interesting article from someone who obviously knows him fairly well.

Clear has lots of talent, and the attitude this season has been miles better. As others have said it will be interesting to see whether he would be offered a new contract or not. Part of me thinks we are just using him because he is here, but would happily sign Phillips or someone else and then ditch Puncheon again.

The thing with Puncheon, he has always considered himself to be a premier league player, part of the problem was that he felt the club was beneath him in League 1/The Championship.

Now we are up there, he is where he wants to be. No need to leave/throw a strop, just get on with it. Finally he can just get his head down and work without any other rubbish to go with it.

Having said that, when does his contract expire?

And you can read his mind how?

Aside from the very elite, most players in Punch's position struggle to turn out consistently high quality performaces - it seems to be the nature of that kind of player. But when they are on song, they can win you games, which is why he is more than deserving of a starting spot.

Great stuff on Saturday - let's hope he can remind Pards why he brought him to Saints by turning on it again and helping us bag a win against Newcastle.

Does this not say more about the poor standard of the England team than about Puncheon's ability.

You just pipe down over there sunshine! We've had the Kelvin, Lambert, Lallana and Harding for England campaigns, what's so ridiculous about Puncheon playing for England?

Shaw and Lambo should be in England squad, Puncheon maybe not based on ability but really who is playing better in the prem then him on the wing whos english, for me patchy but his good plays are so good they lead to chances, i dont think he should get a england call up but like i said please name english players doing more then him in the same position.

I cant believe some of our fans are criticising Puncheon!

He has been one of our most consistent players this season.

He keeps the ball brilliantly.

He has worked up a nice partnership with Clyne.

He has probably been our most threatening attacker this season.

He creates chances for himself and others.

Ok, he could shot earlier sometimes but that is my only criticism!!

PS... I hope he's signs a new contract. The longer it goes on, the more I start to think that the agreement was he would play out his contract and then leave.

Punch has been one of our best performers this season, no doubt about it. He has the ability to hold the ball well, but also to score some wonderful goals too. I just wish he had a few more ideas about him, rather than break down the right, cut into middle, get tackled, repeat. When it works it's a joy, but more often than not we lose it at that point. It might be because of the calibre of player in and around the penalty area of late, but a few more ideas wouldn't go amiss.

Amazing defensive work as well yesterday, strange goal celebration though, what was that about.

I thought it might of been a thumbing his nose at the Chelsea support who had probably been in his ear tonight and at St Marys ten days ago in the FA cup tie.

Punch is the player Ihave enjoyed watching most this year. He's been fantastic and that 20 mins or so in the second half at home to Villa was as good as any individual performance I've seen from anyone in the 10 years or so I've been supporting the team.

Never mind these foreign players we're being linked with, he's got good ability and knows how to play as part of the team. He's an integral cog in the Saints bus. Compare that to Gaston - a gifted player but he's not essential to the team and there are aspects of his game that mean the team can sometimes look more fragile when he plays (silly fouls, doesnt offer as much defensively, is not yet on the same wavelength as the others in the attacking unit etc). We can accomodate one player like that but not others IMO.

He's also become a popular member of the squad. Good mates with AL, gets involved with banter and Luke Shaw states that of all the players it is Punch who has given him the most advice.

I will be gutted if we don't sign Punch up.
