Verbal Kint Posted 25 October, 2012 Share Posted 25 October, 2012 Quite; prehaps we should look at his record of signing players and selling them on for a profit at Pompey if this is the only way to gauge it. Now who was there? Johnson, Diarra, Muntari off the top of my head all sold at a huge profit. But that can't be true because he backrupted Pompey singlehandedly. It's pretty clear from the way the club is run that NA has little say over potential signings. He expected us to reinforce defensively over the summer and we didn't do as much as he expected, and he seemed to be in the dark about the majority of our signings. I doubt NC is suddenly going to give a new manager carte blanche over transfers. So i'd like to know why people think Redknapp is going to get our team defending any better than they are with NA, particularly as when he managed us before he was in a similar situation and failed to address that particular problem pretty spectacularly (our defending was woeful for the whole of that season)? He isn't a coach, despite what he thinks. He's a manager, a wheeler-dealer. That's surely the last thing a control freak like NC wants as his "head coach"

NickG Posted 25 October, 2012 Share Posted 25 October, 2012 some posters are getting very weird and obsessive?? think we need a win for their mental health! As some are struggling with even simple explanations...my final attempt to explain to those less fortunate... Rednapp is a very experienced and quite a good premiership manager. He peddles the myth that he saved Spurs - sadly two or three here so in awe of his words they bought it. He inherited a squad worth a fortune. A squad that had finished mid table then had a ridiculous amount more thrown at it. They started badly, and he was brought in. He spend a huge amount (gross or net makes no difference!!) and this midtable squad, with £100+m added talent, plus the worlds best manager finished.....mid table. He continued to spend - although didn't need to spend as much due to the amount of expensive players already there, and yes sold high as well. But the net spend, on top of an already expensive squad was still high. He took this team from 5th place finishes to 4th. All that is fact and simple. Opinion - some are in awe and think it was excellent, I don't buy it and put him as quite good but over rated.
aintforever Posted 25 October, 2012 Share Posted 25 October, 2012 To be fair Spurs managers have always spent sh!t loads (how much did Hoddle pay for Richards?) but only Redknapp got them into the Champions League. They would have qualified last year as well if Chelsea hadn't have fluked the thing.

Dr Who? Posted 25 October, 2012 Share Posted 25 October, 2012 Redknapp will never happen. Neither will WGS, no matter how much I would love it! Adkins will be here until at least the end of November. Crab Lungs Posted 25 October, 2012 Share Posted 25 October, 2012 WGS worked with Lowe, however, I fear NC would be several steps too far. I don't think they'd get on at all. Meh, doesn't matter. Back Adkins.

Back Adkins. True- could Cortese work with any British manager. On the other hand, the WGS and NC share the same ambition -RC's lack of ambition was ultimately the straw that broke the camel's back- and it appears that WGS is on the good side of the club. Surely, by now, the two will know if they can work together? http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?15675-Strachan-at-St-Mary-s-sat-next-to-cortese

Saint Charlie Posted 26 October, 2012 Share Posted 26 October, 2012 Yeah - Adkins much more forward thinking than nearly all the names mentioned. Still don't really understand why people would get rid of NA. If it is substitutions that is quite funny. If its transfers then I think it is clear that Adkins doesn't have sole say on this (nor do many Managers these days) so how can that be his fault? One thing WGS did do was get the team fit and able to play for 90 mins. We had that in League 1 and a bit more in the NPC which is why we were gaining lots of points late on in matches. Now it seems to be the other way around. And WGS is from well before his time with us...
Charlie Wayman Posted 26 October, 2012 Share Posted 26 October, 2012 Look forward not back for the answer to the questions "What if?" & "Who?" We haven't reached the "What if?" yet so Nigel Adkins is NOT history and we should not be hypothesising about his demise. If we reach the "Who?" of a new manager, it'll be a decision made with great care and with the intent that the appointee will be here for many years to come, based on the assumption that Mr Cortese is still very serious about his ambition for Saints to be a top-six club.
