Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 23 October, 2012 Share Posted 23 October, 2012 Since the birth of our first child four weeks ago, we've decided that we need to move from our Maisonette in Weybridge as we will soon outgrow it. The thought was to move to a 3 bed house in Weybridge, but the price of the area is just a bit too much. I was wondering if anyone had any tips of where to move in the Surrey, Berkshire, Middlesex area. We would like quite a villagey town, no more than 45 minutes into central London, within 30 minutes of Chertsey (for the missus work). I guess we're a bit precious about the area - we like quite posh places... We would like: Period Property Off Street Parking 3 bedrooms (min) Garage Spend no more than £450k We seem to be able to fulfil all our requirements but one for nearly all areas (looking at places like Ascot, Englefield Green, Walton on Thames, Sunbury on Thames, Cobham), which is frustrating, but I thought I'd give this a go before we have to make a compromise. Also, does anyone have any tips on good and bad areas in Ascot, Windsor and Old Windsor, as these 3 seem to fit the bill best at the moment. Any tips will be gratefully received!! Joe Kirkup Posted 23 October, 2012 Share Posted 23 October, 2012 North Ascot and Chavey Down are your best bet. but if you want to be close to stations then Martins Heron/Forest Park are OK ( maybe not as villagey ). Windsor is too hit and miss. Old Windsor is OK but bit of a something and nothing place - no soul.
Turkish Posted 23 October, 2012 Share Posted 23 October, 2012 A lot of people at work live on the north side of Bracknell in between there and Ascot. Reasonable for the area but very nice, apparantly. Personally i'm probably going to be moving up north next year, to Leeds or most likely Harrogate. trousers Posted 23 October, 2012 Share Posted 23 October, 2012 What about looking a little further south of the Ascot/Windor area. Some nice villages in and around Guildford/Farnham area. No idea if there's anything that would fit into your price bracket though.

We are looking in that area, Guildford is nearish to where we currently live. Budget is a little stretched that way though looking at places like Shalford, Effingham etc. Lovely area though! Pretty good access to London by road and by train on the Woking line ! West Byfleet and Pyrford are very high on the list, only a couple of miles from us now and certainly a nice area. Price and a lack of properties is our only issue here from what I can see.

Patrick Bateman Posted 23 October, 2012 Share Posted 23 October, 2012 Yateley, Little Sandhurst, Bagshot or Windlesham I would say. Yateley is a bit pants. I currently live in a village just outside Fleet. I love Fleet, good commuting to London, but it is pretty expensive still (for Hampshire). Farnborough (and Yateley) are a hell of a lot cheaper, but extremely dull, and probably not as nice as Fleet. I'm open to new areas. I was looking at places like Kettering (amazing connections to St Pancras in an hour) and laughing at the huge estates I can buy for £500k. But ... it's crap there. stu0x Posted 24 October, 2012 Share Posted 24 October, 2012 The Wokingham-Waterloo train (the line that Ascot and Sunningdale etc) are on is not great, it's a bit of a stopper and slow. Have you considered the M4 corridor? The Reading-Paddington line is very quick into London (I'm on it right now in fact!), and it is only going to get better when Crossrail comes online. You have quite a few areas around there that would fit the bill perfectly, particularly if you look at the little 'spur' lines off Maidenhead (Bourne End, Marlow) and Twyford (Wargrave, Shiplake, Henley). Hatch Posted 24 October, 2012 Share Posted 24 October, 2012 I love Windsor personally and as soon as I've killed the ex-wife and buried her under the patio to get her out of my house I shall be moving back. The Windsor-Waterloo train though is not good, stops everywhere and takes about an hour, best option is the Windsor-Slough-Paddington train. Bet you live in Hartley Wintney Bateman. Farnborough's good, lots of supermarkets and decent schools. Good motorway links and trains running direct to London/Reading every 10 mins. Not sure about house prices though.
