Anyone heard about the 11th min applause next Sunday?

Great tribute - let's make it happen

**EDIT - original message was on mobile, apologies for brevity**

There is a Twitter campaign doing the rounds to get a minutes applause on the 11th minute to commemorate / Celebrate / show support to Billy Sharp - in memory of his son who died a year ago.

This is a great tribute to Billy, and the LJS Foundation.

If you are at the game on Sunday, or know people who are, please PLEASE spread the word....on here, to friends, on FB, or Twitter - lets get this public and make it happen.

One year since his son died

Right - well obviously it's a good cause Bridgey but it needs explaining to fans who are going to be there. It needs explaining on this thread. It appears that the Villa fans took exception to our total lack of participation in their match tribute to Stan. But it was purely because nobody was pre-warned or knew what was happening.

It is a good gesture, even moreso taking into account he is no longer at the club, and on Sky etc. Is this purely a Saints thing, or more widespread as its around the first anniversary of his tragedy ?

The game isn't on sky. I'm all for supporting Billy Sharp and his charity, but I'm really not a fan of minutes o applause during games. Plus I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else apart from this thread.

My point entirely - the gesture is likely to get completely lost unless the profile of the event is raised in some way.

sure i will get slaughtered (by people who cant understand English and subjectiveness) for this, but;

as much (and i am a father) as I cannot contemplate what they (BS and Mrs) went through, and what great work they are doing in raising money and the profile for the charity, what has a minutes applause got to do with it, and why are we not having a minutes applause at every opportunity for every tragic event that happens - what makes a footballers story special over say, 4 soldiers killed in Afghanistan or even a Saints fan (been going for 25 years etc. more regular and commited than any player), who loses a child to cancer and does a charity bike ride or run etc. to raise money for a fund, does his child, or himslef get a minute's applause at SMS?

Probably because it is a football match and he is a football player who is always going to have a higher profile than an average fan. Way of the world.

Obviously what happened was awful but I too don't get this clapping b*llocks. Villa do it for Petrov still, how long do they carry it on for? When do they stop it? Where do you draw the line at who gets minutes silence/applause or not? Next we'll be doing it for players parents etc, what about fans that have died? Minutes applause during the game is a very Liverpool thing to do. If you want to support him then send some money to his charity.

I agree with Noodles.

I'm a father myself and I, too, cannot bare to think about the pain that Billy and Jade went through. It must have been, and still will be, truly awful.

But, Billy doesn't play for us anymore and are we now going to do a minutes applause everytime a players family member dies?

As has been said before, if you really wanted to show support, send them money. I'm sure Billy and Jade will be touched, but would be more grateful if £50,000 was raised and lives were possibly saved

So is this going on or not ? I think it would be an excellent gesture - wouldn't hurt to show the players who ARE still here that they're we appreciate their contributions and they're not just forgotten the second they happen to get loaned out.

Plus it's a good cause, and it's not like we're doing this all the time. Oh, and they've already had some of my money.

You can guarantee the club won't be having any of it though, they wouldn't even sell LJS Foundation stuff in the club shop (unlike Doncaster and Forest) because of the Saints Foundation.

Still think this should be stickied though.

Yes, as far as I'm aware - this is still planned. The twitter thing is still going strong and the organiser has spoken to his (Sharp's) other clubs and they're taking part too....

Agree - it should be a sticky.

I cant believe the apathy from some on here for this gesture.

We used to be a family club, who cared.

@Supersonic - I believe he DOES still play for us, but is on loan currently. Either way, it's a great cause - so does it matter?

Really hope people join in with me in the 11th min, billy is a hero at this club his goals helped us get promoted and avoid defeats to the skates, he IS STILL a saints player and i really hope he knows as club and fan base we are thinking of one of our own this weekend, as the date approaches when his little man was born and sadly passed away two days later.

Its not apathy, it is the question of where does this stop? Are you so star struck that you believe that it is your duty to support him at the expense of other causes. Frankly i dont blame the club for not selling the LJS stuff, because they have commited to a certain cause and they are not going to dilute it with another, which would then lead to other causes asking. I have a work based charity, The Piam Brown ward in Southampton, which i do golf days, collection boxes etc. to raise funds, I also have a personal charity Save the Children, I contribute and feel better for it, and it allows me to disregard any other (with the obvious exception of spur of the moment contributions like the Poppy appeal) with no guilt. I can turn students (earning money and not donating) away at my doorstep or charities ringing my company with a clear concience.

As for the minutes applause, if it happens i will join in, I do not argue that it is a good cause, and a minutes applause hardly hurts if you feel that it is not against your principles (I did not stand at Blackburn when the Queen Mum dies for example), but my original point was, why are we always persuaded by fans (who just seem to worship anything red and white striped) thay we should be doing it, as I said, consider the fan who has been going for 20 years more of a Saint than some bloke who has played for us a couple of years.

Both sad things to happen, but ultimately incidents involving players past and present will be more highly publicised and will be more well-known to the majority of fans.

I think this is a great cause and Billy has handled himself incredibly well under the face of intense media focus for the past year.

My Grandad died close to this day a few years back. I go to loads of Saints games. He was 79 when he died. Can I have a minutes applause in the 79th minute please? Thanks for your support. Oh and a girl that works in the ticket office has breast cancer apparently, she's 21 years old. Minutes applause on the 21st minute please. I've gone on the Spurs forums to alert them to this too.

Why dont you just keep your opinions and comments to yourself. If you dont like it you dont have to do it but to ridicule this is actually quite disgusting and disrespectful.

As someone said before, Billy is a footballer, a footballer we own and this is a football match. We cant support every cause but this is a way for people to help Billy in raising awareness of Gastroschisis and the work Billy does to help others who come across the defect.
