Seaford Saint Posted 21 October, 2012 Share Posted 21 October, 2012 What's done is done and we are in the bottom 3 now. We either underestimated our need for central defenders or were unable to obtain target players. So the question it seems to me is a simple one...and you can bet your ******** the club is asking this as well. What will it take for us to get out out of the bottom 3 and stay up this season? 2 central defenders, a left back? More positions than this? I don't think we need a change of manager. What do you guys think? Which players could come in and steady us in defence? How much would these cost the club to buy? Is it a coaching issue? I am out of my depth here but my conclusion is simple...the spine of the team is too weak. I dread the next game againat Spurs...I really do. Could we nick a result against them? How? How about intelligent responses? In the meantime I will continue to listen to George Harrison's All Things will Pass and resist the temptation to sneak into the summer house where there are 36 bottles of red wine and drink myself stupid. Dalek2003 Posted 21 October, 2012 Share Posted 21 October, 2012 Keep plugging away and relax. I think if the players and fans get too anxious we will not play freely and will continue to make mistakes.
hasper57saint Posted 21 October, 2012 Share Posted 21 October, 2012 The title of this post has one simple solution. WIN TWO SUCCESSIVE GAMES.
red&white56 Posted 21 October, 2012 Share Posted 21 October, 2012 We have to be strong at home and pick up points there. If we draw against Spurs then that, IMO, will be a good results. Unfortunately we have WBA away after that........ so we have to then target Swansea at home - a win. 4 points out of the next the next 3 games might help ! Miltonaggro Posted 21 October, 2012 Share Posted 21 October, 2012 We all thought that the Villa game was the watershed, so this team must win against Spurs, reflect and learn, and stop making silly mistakes...
Mr X Posted 21 October, 2012 Share Posted 21 October, 2012 Mine won't be a popular view but I vote get someone new in I'm confident that we are good enough for at least seventeenth place with a manager of premiership pedigree question is who would want to come here especially if the Cortese is in control rumours are to be believed? Act now while we have time to get out of this shambles
up and away Posted 21 October, 2012 Share Posted 21 October, 2012 I felt sorry for Adkins yesterday and his honest, forlorn responses to the questions. He got a lot of little things right but nothing to obscure our defence starting in a coma in the second half and that was his day done. When ever i look at Saints midfield and look at what it's necessary to supply, it always comes down to supplementing the attack and bolstering the defence. There's no doubt we can afford to let that defence flounder unaided so I would put that down as a priority and make the best of what's left for supporting the attack. I would start with a back four of Stephens Hooiveld Yoshida Clyne The reason I picked Stephens because we cannot accept Fox giving possession back to the opposition by that simple chip up the line, irrespective of who is there. A midfield of Guly Davis Morgan Lallana Fonte and Fonte wedged between the defence and midfield. Fonte showed he could do this midfield job against West Ham when he brought the ball out on several occasions. I know he's his own worst enemy when he's put under pressure but hoping the extra layer will give him time and space to collect himself because that back four will not hole it's own without help. Guly finds himself getting picked again because he is there to look after Stephens. That leaves Mayuka as the lone centre forward and if that does not work it all falls flat on its face. When West Ham had a little push at us in the second half we were found wanting. We needed our midfield that little bit closer to the defence and further back to clear up the spaces. We then must have pace up front to keep their defenders honest and outlets in Lallana and Guly that can retain the ball. If Chung is available that may be a further option but you can't fit everyone in. I am hoping Stephens can compliment Clynes attacking threat but their first job is to defend, we can't afford to give away that space as we did against West Ham. If we don't find a way of closing up that defence it's all over for us, that we are sure of now. I'm not going to be dumb enough to say this will work but we have to find a way of addressing our weaknesses.
