It will be a Continental manager, possibly Italian, who is used to working in a southern Continental club structure where he is Head Coach and that alone.

Hopefully also someone old school Italian who knows how to coach and implement a strong defensive unit.

Don Howe, Howard Wilkinson and Big Ron Atkinson are all looking for work and would jump at the chance.

I saw Graham Taylor on the telly the other day. Bags of Prem experience and an ex England manager. Surely he wouldn't be out of his depth at this level?

We already have a large coaching and performance team. Why not keep Adkins as front man and bring in a defensive coach. If McCarthy is good at organising them as has been mentioned earlier why not hire him to be "Defence coach' to sort out the foibles of Jos, Jose etc.

That sounds like fun

Perhaps not; but its where any side looking to consolidate in this division should sort out first. I'm still amazed our transfer activity was so lop-sided; £10M for 2 strikers to add to the first choice one and then try to shoe-horn into one central striking position. And £12M for another attacking midfielder (when Lallana had seemingly been moved into that same central role). Being defensive-minded is not a concept we seem to be able to embrace; at all.

Good shout. Howard Kendall must still be looking for work. He took Everton, a small club with a smaller fan base than us and turned them into league champions and cup winners cup winners. Hes also managed in Spain and Greece so would get these fancy foreign ideas. I reckon he's the man for the job.

He was back in the media spotlight this weekend doing some punditry, maybe he's putting himself in the frame for a new job somewhere....

Did you see his hair?! It was absolutely hilarious.

There's one name I'm VERY surprised hasn't been said already.

Doesn't have any PL managerial experience, but has managed in the top European club competition.

would be a popular choice too

Whatever you do, don't tell us who it is.

Yes, I noticed that. That's going to need a trim if he's going to become part of the Southampton way.

I heard some Sunderland fans on the radio earlier today saying how terrible they have been as they cant score any goals and how concerning it was that only Fletcher has scored for them.

The mistakes we are making are largely individual, the overall shape of the team isn't a problem. That's why it's so frustrating to me because we can cut it out, we would be a pretty decent side.

We just need a solid win to inject some confidence in the side, certain players really need it. We're in a rut we havent had in over 3 years.

Peter Shreeves, David Pleat and Gerry Francis are all experienced men with proven top flight records as well. Get one of 'zen on the bus FFS

I met Peter Shreeves once; I was in the directors box at Watford and he was in there. Absolute sh*t of a man; and even pulled out the "don't you know who I am" card (apparently he'd had trouble getting in without his ticket).

Gerry Francis' mullet rules him out instantly for me; Dave Pleat is a worry too, he'd probably be straight on the phone to Avram to find out about Colden Common's more salubrious areas.

I'd be all for this. None of this ****ing about with the ball in our own half, playing between the lines ********. Just get some diags up to Rickie and get Chappers charging into the box for the knock downs FFS

I think we need a settled side; that would be a start. And then we need a clean sheet. Or a game where we only let one goal in!! Apparently in every game we've played we've been behind at some point; that also needs to stop.

From a side huge in confidence we're rapidly becoming the exact opposite. Anything against Spurs has to be a complete positive.

But yes; with Demba ba's own goal today he became Sunderland's second highest scorer for the season!

What about Bobby Robson? I know he's dead and all that, but hcdajfu. No point in being prejudiced.

Yep, none of this Poncy Possesion football. Just get it forward to Rickie. In fact as a large percentage of the fans around me scream this everytime we are knocking it about then he'd certainly be a popular choice.

Although if defensive improvement are what we are after then there is only one choice. George Graham.

Guardiola has been mentioned, so could it be Bert Van Marwijk?

Despite what you might think I do not think Glenn Hoddle would be the answer to SFC just now.

2004, was a differnt matter. The faliure to re-appoint Hoddle then ranks as one of the biggest mistake the board made, closely followed by bowing to the vocal minority !

A chance to play our best first 11 for a few games would be huge. I know people think we should have invested the Gaston money elsewhere but I think he's class and will be massive for us this season.

good shout, but no.

In a job atm but not in one of Europe's "mainstream" leagues

Peter Taylor - sacked yesterday as Bahrain coach. That's not a 'Europe mainstream league'

All this Barcelona fixation has to stop, the fans don't want it. We wan't to see some long balls into the pickle box just to see what happens and for our defenders to find touch first and muck about with it later with a bit of pace in behind as well. Is that too much to ask for Atdkins?!

I think you're on the right lines with regards to having a settled side. Unfortunately Adkins hands have been tied somewhat by injuries, but he has made changes which he hasn't need to (i.e the GK today). Seeing as our back 4 is so creaky, you need to keep that as settled as possible. So inviting your 3rd goal keeper of the season to have a go, isn't the greatest preparation - so for me, that's an error.

At least NC won't listen to fans, he will be decisive even if it upsets us (Rednapp).

What do these dagos know about football FFS? It's as clear as day. Just stop f****** about with it and get it in the mixer. Get it forward to the big man and get stuck in FFS!

What about Harry Bassett, possibly with Dennis Wise again, purveyors of Total Football wherever they have been ?
