CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 20 October, 2012 Share Posted 20 October, 2012 I heard NA saying in his pre match interview just how hard he and the team were working to tighten up our shocking poor defence. Well they're obviously not working hard enough, or more worryingly, they're just not good enough. I don't think we're quite at the sacking stage tonight, but surely we can't carry on like this much longer ....

max_saints Posted 20 October, 2012 Share Posted 20 October, 2012 why the **** was gazzaniga dropped when he did okay (okay in our porous defence standards) we already have a slow and fat keeper in davis i dont think we need boruc. many have been touting him as the 'final jigsaw' or the 'solution' to our troubled defence but i dont see him being any better than gazza and in fact his playing today only caused the defence to become more unsettled than it already is with so many changes from our previous starting defence. alpine_saint Posted 21 October, 2012 Share Posted 21 October, 2012 (edited) Next summer I am not going to take any abusive b*ll*cks from the likes of S-Clarke and co. Its f**king bizarre that despite the regularity with which they besmirch my opinion and accuse me of negativity, I seem to have more of a f**king clue about the quality of our transfer activity and pre-season preparations tham them, despite the fact that they are Über-Fans who never miss a game and I only get to see a handful. Every f**king year we neglect our defence, with the one exception of when Pardew came. Maybe I should elevate my opinion of him. Ridiculous how objectivity gets labelled as "negativity" round here. Cabrone Posted 22 October, 2012 Share Posted 22 October, 2012 Not really surprised, prem league attacks are razor sharp and our champ defence hasn't yet learned how to cope. They need to learn quickly now + RL needs to start every game up front if he's fit. Think the spending was too biased towards attack and we are suffering as a result. For me Boruc needs to stay in goal and get as much match fitness as possible, if we survive he's going to be a big part of it (IMO). My target was, is and will be 17th so we're about where I thought we'd be. No panic, just hope the team can suss out this league ASAP. Long way to go yet. This Charming Man Posted 22 October, 2012 Share Posted 22 October, 2012 Of course it was. Yet those who pointed it out were shouted down. We were told to wait until the end of the transfer window. We were then told that we would be fine and that most of the teams in the Premiership were easy. That we would definitely finish mid table. We didn't strengthen enough at the back and it was obvious to most people. I spent all summer saying it and was repeatedly told I haven't got a clue what I'm on about and to just shut up and get behind the team. I don't come on here that often any more as the delusional little bubble that the vast majority on here live in is quite frankly staggering. Only now the penny seems to have dropped for some on here. West Ham are a very ordinary Premiership side but they tore us to pieces on Saturday, that's because they have the right kind of player - strong and experienced Premiership players. Then again, I was told that's not what we need and was laughed at and ridiculed for suggesting such a preposterous idea.

I would imagine a defensive coach would also come in handy too. My beef is with the amount of abuse we got for expressing what were perfectly valid concerns then. Next year I expect, nay, I demand that peoples appraisal of our transfer activity and pre-season preparations are given a lot more respect. Once again: the "slowly, slowly, catcheee monkeee" transfer phillosophy has been proven to be utter w*nk, and unless the Saints management want to suffer a double relegation they'd better get their sh*t together and hit the ground running. david in sweden Posted 22 October, 2012 Share Posted 22 October, 2012 (edited) You apparently, and a few others with your conspiracy theories. Could it be that somehow our targets did not materialise? We were certainly going for 2 CBs when we were out in Switzerland. We have also signed one since. We were also clearly looking to sign a LB until Manure turned his head. I've more faith in NA than a lot on this site, but I can't believe that he thought our existing defence was good enough. OK we signed Yoshida - but with Jaidi retiring - we needed to sign someone (-1 / +1) .....but now we have to play him at LB because (apparantly)we can't trust Fox to do the job. Richardson had reached 30 (I think) and Clyne was a good investment - even though it's apparant he isn't the finished article yet ..(+1) ..but (surprisingly) we let Martin (who did well last season for a while)..go on a long loan, but kept Seaborne, who only played the first 4 games. We sold Harding.. but still have Dickson on the books? Despite the £4 million to Arsenal transfer rumours, Luke Shaw never made the squad and got injured /sick and hasn't even played U21 regularly since....so where are we?. Jos and Jose were good (most of the time) last season...but Jos isn't Prem. class and Jose isn't the same player since his injury last Autumn. Our only two regular CBs are good in the air but slow on the turn. Clearly, the Buttner " non-deal" , and the extraordinary length of time it took to finalise the Ramirez deal took its toll on Cortese's banker ethics.....and all the time taken trying NOT to get screwed .took the energy out of the waiting fans and the other " potential " deals. Based on the last 2-3 years ...I have come to respect both Adkins and Cortese; BUT ...if NA wanted more defenders and didn't get them.... then Cortese is at fault. If NA didn't think we needed anyone else .. he is at fault. I don't call that conspiracy theories, Vectis - just plain common sense. S-Clarke Posted 22 October, 2012 Share Posted 22 October, 2012 Errr, double relegation? What a drama queen. Even a shell of our squad could stay up in a the Champ. To be honest, if a squad gets in a rut then getting a double relegation is as likely as getting a double promotion. If, god forbid, we have a season where we get less/similar points as Derby then we will end up back in the championship with the biggest losing hangover ever. Our ''better'' players would leave, and we'd be left with a shell of unmotivated and un-confident football players. I'm not getting the view that we will bounce back up, if we go down we will not have it as ''straight forward'' as we had it last time in the NPC.
