Essentially, they've created a (pretty inefficient) way of storing energy from renewable sources in a form our current energy infrastructure uses.

 

If they can scale it up, and improve the efficiency, could be a real game changer.

Interesting - but the technique seems to have many stages and appears to be quite energy intensive. Seems to me the best and easiest way to turn renewable electricity into a transport fuel is simple electrolysis of water - splitting water with electricty to obtain hydrogen and oxygen.

 

Would be interesting to know how this technique would stack up enviromentally and economically.

It has been proven to work and for some unknown reason Exxon have got a patent on the idea and at present projects on it are shelved no conspiracy theories needed here.
