Long way from commercial production but seems like the best idea would be to site this either beside a hydro plant or in the depths of the Sahara desert and use solar power for generation of the necessary electric power

Interesting - but the technique seems to have many stages and appears to be quite energy intensive. Seems to me the best and easiest way to turn renewable electricity into a transport fuel is simple electrolysis of water - splitting water with electricty to obtain hydrogen and oxygen.

 

Would be interesting to know how this technique would stack up enviromentally and economically.

It has been proven to work and for some unknown reason Exxon have got a patent on the idea and at present projects on it are shelved no conspiracy theories needed here.
