I know this isn't really current, but was browsing youtube and came across this video of Beattie.

I think it's every one of his goals for Saints, some that aren't anywhere else on youtube - a good watch and some good memories.

Its a pity Ricky doesnt have that burst of pace that Beattie used to have. ie that 3rd goal.

Not taking anythting away from RL of course, just saying he would be even better for us if he did.

If Lambert had pace he would be playing for a top 8 club.

I didnt really think Beattie was that pacy, but looking at some of them goals you realise he was pretty quick over 10/20 yards. Which is why he struggled to score when unfit i suppose. He had the first touch of a rapist!

Yes short memories, me included. Beattie the better player in his prime. Rickie is the more intelligent player however Beattie was better in all other areas IMO.

NIce to view "Beatts " in top form.

Although his time with Saints was his most productive goalwise he topped 400 apps. in his career and his 68 goals in 204 apps for Saints was quite reasonable all things considered.

Looking at the (two) videos you can see that he had very powerful headers (as opposed to the legendary Ron Davies) who was so adapt at " placing " his headers.

Like MLT he scored many goals on the volley, and frequently "chipped " the keeper, and also had a " pretty mean " free-kick.

I don't know JB's penalty record, but his style (unlike MLT) was that quick walk away - back to the keeper- a fast turn ...a few, stuttering " baby steps"..... and a cannon finish.

Without doubt his finest season was 2002-03 (ten years ago) when he had a nightmare start - failing to score in the first NINE games - but then hit a " purple patch " netting 11 times in 8 matches...and finished the season with 7 goals in 8 matches (incl. 6 consecutive goals). With 23 league goals, he was the leading English goalscorer in the Prem. but lost out on the "Golden Boot " award to Thierry Henry.

After his unhappy move to Everton, his career went downhill, whilst his bank balance surely went up.

His return to Sheff. Utd last season was a real fiasco, ending in a red card, and sadly (at 34).. he will count himself lucky if he gets to play League football again - at any level.

Beats was a good player for us and I enjoyed watching him. His first touch sometimes let him down but he was good. It is a shame that his career semed to go downhill when he went to Everton.

Is this one of those joke type comments, waiting for a reaction?

I'm not sure about 'better in all other areas' but Beatts was a hell of a player in his prime. His problem was consistency but he had a couple of seasons when he was really good. Rickie has yet to prove himself in the Premier League.

I think Beattie is one of those players that will have lots of divided opinion. I personally didn't think he was great, he had one good season in which he went on an amazing scoring run and got some great goals. But overall throughout watching him since he signed for saints I thought his touch was poor, his passing was poor and he missed more than he scored. Hats off to him though he was a handful and put himself about whenever put the red and white on

Thx for the video. Brings back some nice memories. Shame we mostly remember the last few years when his heart was not in it and he became a billy-big-****** sort of guy. Up to then a true striker in the good ol fashioned sense.

Good to be reminded of him in his prime. Then he was better than Carroll is today and he is regually in the england squad. DOH.

Remember James "The Muffin Man" BT ?

No lambert has more vision scores as many goals at least, mores skilful than Beattie, just as good in air. Pace only thing Beattie had over him. Lambert better player.

2:10 I think is actually Chris Perry (bless) being dragged out wide before Beattie cut in and scored the winner against Spurs. 3:00 is the first in a 4-0 mauling of a rather decent Leicester side with Izzet, Elliott, Lennon etc.

Behave yourself Roger. Beattie scored all his goals for us in the Premier league, Lambert has scored 4, all of his apart drom those have come at a lower level. When he's scored 15-20 a season for a couple of seasons in the Premier league then you might have a case. Lambert is still unproven at this level, Beattie was excellent for us at a time when we weren't scoring many goals. In his prime in Strachans side we were hard to beat and set up quite defensively, we didn't create load of chances yet he still scored over 20 goals in a couple of seasons.

After seeing nearly every game they both played still feel lambert has more in his arsenal.

As have I. And all bar 7 of Lamberts have been at a lower level than all of Beatties.

Agree but Beattie has hardly scored many in lower leagues at lamberts age has he? I see what ur saying hopefully lambert will score many if kept on pitch!

He has actually, Beattie is 34 now so 4 years older, But between 07-09 when he would have been 29-31 he scored 34 goals in 62 games for Sheff United at a lower level. So slightly behind lamberts championship and L1 record but all of those came in the championship and not playing for a team which won promotion.

Not only that... He scored many many vital and winning goals in the prem... He was a regular match winner... Top English striker in an era with players better than welbeck ffs

The video shows just how good Beattie was, and how good that Strachan side was on the break. The old adage that when you get chances in the Prem you have to take them is pertinent, and Beattie was a bit of a dab hand...

I feel that BT doesn't really get the credit he deserves from Saints fans - he was a quality player for us.

Great to see those goals again and what a deadeye he was from the penalty spot.

Yep. Strachans sides were very fit, well drilled and solid and in Beattie we had a striker who was suited to the way we played. He wasn't a pretty footballer but was effective and a handful for defenders. It's a shame Beattie and Pahars never really got to play together in their prime as that would have been a great partnership.

Easy to forget just how good he was for us back then, he must have been a nightmare to play against big, stong and reasonably quick, decent of either foot, great in the air and could score from anywhere.

Love watching the teams of that era great to see players like Marsden and Fernandes at their best setting up the big guy, that really was a golden era for saints.

I don't remember him so lanky, or having such on odd running style. He didn't have a very long stride for a guy with such big legs!

I was watching a Jay Rod vid of his goals for Burnley and I thought there were a lot of similarity in style with Beattie.

Excellent video, reminded me that he scored some wonderful goals, shame they didnt include the "earcupping" celebration v the skates. Also forgot just how much i loved his penalty taking technic

the celebration is included towards the end of the part II video
