Does Nicola Cortese's dream .....

.........include signing players like..... Ashley Cole?

Cole (only 31) says he is going to leave Chelsea in the summer.... when his contract runs out ....

.So ..with no transfer fee involved, a salary of a few £million a year MIGHT just attract him ..OR ?

...A good chance to see if Cortese's resolve to succeed can land a few " bigger fish " ..and solve our LB problem in one go .....or maybe you don't agree?

As good a player as he is, signing him would rather go against our policy of signing players with years of playing ahead of them.

And as mentioned, the wages would be astronomical and he'll have better offers from elsewhere.

.....so couldn't we? Would it be better to pay out £15- 20 million fee to buy a world class defender.. or sign someone for nothing... and pay him £4 million-a-year for 3 years instead?

I think you are vastly underestimating the wages that he will expect.

That Russian club will offer him £250k a week, PSG will probably also offer him that and at least a 2 year contract probably 3. That 'free' transfer will cost them pretty much £40 million, for a player who will be 35 at the end of it.

I think £100k per week would be £20m for 4 years?

Over 30, on the down side of his career, will expect huge wages. Doesn't really fit the model of our signings does it.

In any case, it's a moot point, he'll want CL football. There's a good chance he'll go to Real Madrid and Mournino and if not then possibly PSG.

You have seen his twitter stuff and his general behaviour? He's no John Terry but still a ghastly individual.

Good footballer though, just at 31 doesn't fit our player profile (which amusingly Abramovich is copying!)

Still not sure what he's done to make him the "biggest c**t in football", as you say yourself, he's no John Terry.

Here's a paraphrase quote from his biography, "When Arsene called and offered me GPB100,000 a week I almost swerved my porsche off the road at how derisory the offer was." Knob head

Dunno mate, have to say I have a serious dislike for him for a few reasons. The main one being in his own autobiography he mentions "almost swerving my Bentley off the road" when "only" offered £55k a week by the club that developed him and made him an England regular. Oh, and I've always had a pathological hatred of him that I can't shake due to thinking (wrongly in hindsight) that Bridgey should have had the England left back spot.

Would say Terry comes across as a nastier bloke and is clearly slightly mental (I'm referring to him wearing the full Chelsea kit inc shin pads for the Euro Cup final so he could be photographed) but Cashley is pretty despised in the game.

Top left back that would never sign for us in a million years btw.

This is the 20th post of the thread and nobody has mentioned that he is the biggest (ock in football.

I'd hate to go anywhere near him.

Agreed, I think this would be Corteste's nightmare, not dream. he may be a good defender but is the sort of person I would hate to have anywhere near Southampton. He is a total ****, and even now an acknowledged liar according to the FA following the Terry hearing. If we are fantasising (because that is what this is) i would rather have Baines now.

David in Sweden with another WUM thread. Bizarre. But not a suprise...... on previous form.

Eh? David is a pretty good poster on this site, can't say he has any sort of WUM history. He's made a point, which is very wide of the mark, but he doesn't deserve to be called a WUM for it!

Cole was the better player but only just at the time, however Bridge was stupid not to leave Chelsea earlier, he could have got a regular starting spot pretty much anywhere else and continued to have developed. Had he have done Ashley Cole wouldn't have close to 100 caps, however Bridge's career stalled and he went backwards sitting on the bench at Chelsea and Man City. I certainly think he still would be playing premiership football now if he hadn't chased the money. It annoys me that time and time again Footballers move to big clubs and end up sitting on the bench and not progressing, not heeding the examples of previous players. Walcott would be a far better player if had stayed with us for two more seasons or moved to a middle premiership club like Everton where he would have got more first team football.

Having said that though as Bridge is going out with that Saturday's girl and is a multi millionaire he probably doesn't really care.

I'm using WUM in the nicest sense. Most of his threads are very entertaining but as you put it often "wide of the mark".

After watching England last friday I thought this had started to happen to Chamberlain too :(

Really let down to see him play more and more like Theo and less like the quality kid he was for us.

I was at the game (yawn) and thought AOC was our best player by far. More galling were the likes of Cleverley whose every pass was so, so predictable - like years of coaching have taken any ounce of flair or imagination away. That is like so many English midfielders - they become quite good at doing the expected, and why we are so easy to defend against.

Cleverley would play a pass to someone and then sprint forward because thats what he was coached to do (pass and mvoe) but with no intention of being available for the next ball - instead just moving in straight lines.

At least NA keeps talking about getting us to "play between the lines" and we have some players ie Lallana who do this really well - drifting into good positions (and Lallana has the flair to do the unexpected occassionally) but you only had to see Ramirez vs Villa to see that he is the type of player England just don't produce - likewise David Silva, Cazorla etc.

The reason - they play the same pass they did in the school playground 10-15 years ago - the natural, instinctive, creative one - rather than the one the coach said to when you get the ball in x position.

Nearly all Silva, Cazorla, Fabregas, Iniesta, Xavi etc's best work comes out of little 5-10 yard passes - apart from they are played in the opposite direction/angle/time to what is the norm.

England tried to play like that vs San Marino and kept getting the ball stuck under foot.

I don't think we should rule it completely out. Le Saux came to us from Chelsea and in his time, he was a top-class leftback (maybe he was on a slight downward trajectory though). He, admitidely, also fell for the undeniable charm of the South Coast. We're just an hour away from London, 45 minutes from Bournemouth and have a regional airport which services much of Europe.

We also have some great waterfront and forest pubs, a huge regeneration programme taking place in the city, meaning more amenities for the likes of Ashley (and Cheryl, if she's up for it) to do. We've got the cruise terminal, West Quay and just a few miles north there's the idyllic Winchester - truly beautiful on a crisp winter's day.

If he likes animals, he could easily scoot up to Marwell or better still, could even go pony riding in the New Forest with David Luiz.

There really is quite a lot to do and see round here for a mature England international on £125,000pw... we definitely have enough comparable attractions to London so he might, might just be tempted.

Can anyone else think of any more reasons than the one I have stated? I'm sure I've forgotten some!
