Sheaf Saint Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Here he goes... http://www.redbullstratos.com/live/
Colinjb Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Was wondering when this was going to happen. Crazy crazy sod.
The Kraken Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 This is thoroughly boring and absolutely captivating all at the same time! The spuds on this guy though; amazing.
dubai_phil Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 And they call us on PST nutjobs If only the feed would load.........
Ric Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 He's definitely in with a shout for "Biggest B*ll*cks of the Year" award. I get queasy on a medium height diving board - and I certainly wouldn't do even a standard parachute jump. Fair play to him - hope it all goes well
dubai_phil Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 I hope he don't splat himself on top of Roswell Saint...... Yeah I know he lives in the other Roswell but hey
dubai_phil Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Lol we're all sitting here watching nothing happen and listening to a hissing noise. & it is GRIPPING!
the stain Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Oh, no, doors not open. Got overexcited there.
Colinjb Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Dangling your legs at 128,100 ft. Nuts. But to see that view......
Turkish Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Thought he was a goner when he started spinning. Bloody incredible stuff.
Thedelldays Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Now live on BBC news channel. god, they dont shut up on there
Colinjb Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Thought he was a goner when he started spinning. Bloody incredible stuff. It's a good point though, how do you steady yourself when there's minimal air to offer resistance? It looked really bad for a bit.
Ohio Saint Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Landing on his feet like that was just classic. I was worried too when he was spinning.
dubai_phil Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 OK that was a total wowser How the HELL did he have the nuts to step out. Gave me the heebie jeebies just to watch
Ohio Saint Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Thanks for the link Bexy, that was awesome!
S-Clarke Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 that was awesome, the ease in which he landed at the end....just magic stuff. The BBC guys woffled a fair bit of rubbish, I think the fella was in control all the way down.
The Kraken Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 It's a good point though, how do you steady yourself when there's minimal air to offer resistance? It looked really bad for a bit. In the ascent they said that if he got into too much of a spin (too much g-force) his 'chute would open automatically to stabilise him. Looked really dicey though!! What a LAD. He'll never have to buy a beer for as long as he lives.
Ohio Saint Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Bit of a wimp really. He shoulda done it in a wing suit.
saintbletch Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Stunning. But did he actually break the free fall record? I thought the graphic said that the record was 4min 36 secs. It looked as if he 'only' fell for 4min 15 secs. Great to see a bunch of records broken live like that.
The Kraken Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 (edited) Stunning. But did he actually break the free fall record? I thought the graphic said that the record was 4min 36 secs. It looked as if he 'only' fell for 4min 15 secs. Great to see a bunch of records broken live like that. Doesn't look like he broke the duration record, but he got the highest and the fastest. Not sure yet if he broke the speed of sound; its to be confirmed. My guess is he didn't, speed of sound is 768mph, from what I could see of his speed he got up to around 730mph (though that was only an estimation, I guess the tech in his suit will have the actual values). Ohio Saint Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 No, he missed the free fall record. The Earth was too close I guess.
dubai_phil Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Stunning. But did he actually break the free fall record? I thought the graphic said that the record was 4min 36 secs. It looked as if he 'only' fell for 4min 15 secs. Great to see a bunch of records broken live like that. Some records 19.22 (12.22) Mission Control says it was a 4 minute 22 second freefall, which means it would not break Kittinger's record. No word yet on whether he broke Mach. New world records have been set for the highest freefall ever, the fastest freefall ever, and the highest manned balloon flight. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/9607604/Skydiver-Felix-Baumgartner-attempts-to-break-sound-barrier-live.html
Ohio Saint Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Question: How come his mum didn't tell him to come inside and stop messing about?
saintbletch Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Well he should go straight back up and finish the job.
Sheaf Saint Posted 14 October, 2012 Author Posted 14 October, 2012 Doesn't look like he broke the duration record, but he got the highest and the fastest. Not sure yet if he broke the speed of sound; its to be confirmed. My guess is he didn't, speed of sound is 768mph, from what I could see of his speed he got up to around 730mph (though that was only an estimation, I guess the tech in his suit will have the actual values). The speed of sound in air is variable depending on numerous aspects such as altitude, pressure, temperature. That figure is based on 20 degree air at sea level. I don't know if that means it would be faster or slower in the conditions he jumped in.
Lighthouse Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 The speed of sound in air is variable depending on numerous aspects such as altitude, pressure, temperature. That figure is based on 20 degree air at sea level. I don't know if that means it would be faster or slower in the conditions he jumped in. The speed of sound is lower at high altitude (more specifically when air is colder), so if he did break the speed of sound it was likely not at the fastest speed he achieved. The maximum altitude of an aircraft is limited by this. As the aircraft climbs, the speed of sound outside will decrease. Eventually you will get to a point where you cannot fly slower without stalling and you cannot fly faster without exceding the aircrafts maximum mach number. This is known as coffin corner and will be higher or lower depending on an aircraft's weight and outside air temperature.
Lighthouse Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Thinking about it, if he broke the sound barrier anywhere it is most likely around the tropopause, which at those latitiudes would probably have been about 40,000ft. Above that the speed of sound will start to go up again as the atmosphere warms up slightly.
Ken Tone Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Apparently Arsene Wenger isn't sure he did actually dive, because he didn't see it.
trousers Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Did he break the Pompey free fall record...?
dubai_phil Posted 14 October, 2012 Posted 14 October, 2012 Did he break the Pompey free fall record...? Yes. But then pcfc hacked into the Guinness Book of records and changed the figures again, so no.
