Can't help but want the underdogs to do well, even if they are playing against us tonight. Good luck to the Salesman, the Olive Oil company worker, the Student, the Accountant, the Bank Clerk and the Bar Owner against the 11 prima donna's.

Forza San Marino.

Cleverly and welbeck really Really crap.. How defoe is not playing instead of welbeck is a mystery

Welbeck makes no runs at all, bar the flick goal. He just stood there marked most of the half.

Cleverley is double the player Jordan Henderson is...

....................which makes his just excruciatingly sh1t

When I was a kid I used to idolise England players like Peter Shilton,Terry Butcher, Linker and Bryan Robson watching this game tonight almost wanting San Marino to win I really just can't find it in my heart to like the current English players.....

Yep, totally agree.

Watcked the Micks get steamrollered by the Germans instead - as Thought England v San Mariono would be dull and predictable and someone needs to tell Wellbeck that his hairstyle went out with the Fresh Prince of Bellair...

Not sure what Trappatoni is doing, but surprized the Irish had not spirit or fight they are are usually regarded for... just sort of rolled over in th end - yes the Germans scored some nice goals, but were made to look better than theye were.

England - seem to habitually make hard work of things... and the curent crop of players are so difficlt to like or have any affinity with - probably because we cant see players who have obviously work and grafted to get where they are and the younger players all that that slight 'attitude' that make you think they take it for granted... maybe all just perception, but Butcher, Lineker, Shearer, Robson etc they gave the impression that is was a privilage, and teh pinnicle to play for your country... Including someone like Lambert would change that for me, not beacuse he is a saint, but because hes the sort of down to earth, grafter who has paid his dues that most fans love to see get their moment.

Can't help but think Rickie and Lallana would have shone last night, but we're obviously still not fashionable enough to have our players represent our country!

I didn't think watching England could get anymore dull than under Capello and Sven, but Hodgson is rapidly making watching paint dry more appealing.

We'd all better hope that Wilshire and Chamberlain don't get injured as they seem to be the only bright sparks in a pool of recognised dross as far as national talent goes in this country. Wellbeck, Cleverley and Carroll were useless. Someone needs to sit these young men down and give them a history lesson, this country and it's greatest achievements have been built on an ability to fight to the very bitter end at times in the face of huge amounts of terror and adversity, what got us through was the belief that we wont be beaten, this lot in our 'national' team either can't or won't fight from the first to the last. That has to change. When ability isn't enough, hard work will see you be victorious. Someone in the coaching set up needs to teach them that.

I bet San Marino would have been ecstatic if someone had said to them beforehand 'You are going to go and play a team that are ranked well over two hundred places above you in the standings, and only concede five goals'

The worst thing about it was how easy we made it for San Marino. One dimensional attempts to pass through their congested penalty box over, and over, and over again. There was one moment where we had Wellbeck in possession (I think....) who had Rooney and another two players trying to find space in a two meter square area in the penalty box also populated by about five/six San Marino defenders.

Had he bothered to drop his shoulder he would have seen two left sided players in acres of space trying to spread the defenders and create space, but no. We played directly into the joint worst side in international football's hands.... time. and. time. and time. again!!!

yep.

I think it was Clive Tyldsley the commentator who at 4-0 questioned how many a team like Spain or Germany would knock past San Marino compared to us. Well I can tell him that San Marino in the last few years have been beaten 11-0 by the Netherlands and 13-0 by Germany.

We were all too predictable and whenever we play a side in which we dominate possession we never know what to do with it and it's one of the areas where we are an absolute mile behind the likes of Germany, Spain and the South American sides. 4-5 years ago I seem to remember Andorra holding out for around the 55 min when we had McClaren in charge. But for a group of pub players and 1 pro who plays in the Italian equivalent of League 2 to hold out for 35 mins in front of 90,000 people (3 times San Marino's entire population) is quite an achievement. If their keeper hadn't have had that moment of madness it would have been longer but considering the gulf in class I thought they played well.

I can see the argument for having a pre-qualifying stage for say the 8 lowest ranked European sides before the group stage but at the end of the day if the tiny countries want to try to compete there is no reason why they shouldn't. If nothing else it is a wonderful experience for their players.
