New Kit Next Season?

Apologies if this has been covered (Mods delete if it has)

I was reading about England changing over from Umbro (Basically as Nike have taken them over) and in the article is says that the Umbro will only make kits next year for Forest, Huddersfield and Blcakburn.

Assuming that isn't just crap reporting, will we get a new kit or will it simply be a case of swapping the Umbro badge with the Nike "tick"

We'll definitely get a new kit as our deals with Umbro have all been one year deals (for the home kits anyway). And our overall deal with Umbro ends this year, I believe.

I've always quite liked Nike kits so it would be good to sign up with them (not that it really matters, I only wear Saints kit for 5 a side).

With solid red this year I feel it will be a welcome return to stripes next season. Hope so, anyway.

*waits for The9 to show up*

I'm sure the9 or MLG will be along to clarify but I believe we're on a one-year cycle atm so yes, new kit next year.

Something that doesn't look **** would be nice...

Umbro will not simply become Nike. Nike will keep a few high profile 'umbro' teams on the books like England. Mike Ashley of Newcastle and Sports Direct will buy what we know as Umbro. Saints Umbro deal was up at the end of this season anyway so i'm sure they will have been looking around at others anyway.

Can we then go Adidas - the kits are soo much nicer

Too samey for me; they pretty much all just seem to follow a very set template and don't deviate much. The fit of them is decent (I have a couple for 5 a side) but they are a bit too all the same. Although if they just did a very basic and simple red and white striped shirt, that would be decent.

New kit thread, let's get the designs going then, for our premier league Nike shirt.

I have the all red top and it is good, and I like it, but it is not Saints. Look at the badge, it has a red and white stripy scarf on it.

I like new kits, and looking forward to the stripes coming back!

Sad if seems likely umbro stop making football shirts. So much history in english football from an English brand. Nike have asset striped umbro and are looking to sell the carcass and rebrand as a general sportswear brand like lonsdale etc. Ok so there has been that chavy market for a while with umbro and other brands, but this would be 100%

If as seems likely we lose umbro, my 1st choice despite the umbro rape would be Nike, but I don't see that happening. Adidas efforts other than the big 4 have been generic and unimaginitive in the extreme, plus they can't do stripes well at all. Swanseas kits are nice this year mind

Wouldnt mind kappa actually, anything but macron please. League 2 kits IMO, only ones I've liked are the lazio designs.

Cant see Nike making much effort with a kit for us. They will just offer us something from their standard range.

I think we will change manufacturer, though havent a clue to whom. Like some others, I absolutely detest Kappas chav-styling, so hope its not them. Patrick still do nice kits.

Spurs now have Under Amor from the States, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the Australian rugby kit manufacturers like Kooga and ISC entering the market. I know the Skates had Canterbury a few years ago. A pity that truly 100% English owned sports manufacturers seem to be few and far between.

really don't see the need to change the kit every year. it used to be every three which, imo, was sensible

Has never been every 3 years. I remember we had same kit (albeit with different sponsors) between 1981 & 85. Since then it's always been every 2 years up until the last 3 years where its been replaced yearly.

How about we have our own Southampton brand? I'll get my coat!

Wouldn't be overly surprised if we did go back to making our own kit again tbh, I'm sure NC would do so if it meant more money in our pockets and not having to give a cut to an outside manufacturer.

I hope we don't by the way, I'd be happy to have Nike or Adidas.

The article is actually poor journalism and a rehash of an original by Sam Wallace in the Independent. Just one of a number of errors is to say that England wore Umbro kit from 1954 unbroken for only 10 years by Admiral, when Bukta shirts were worn in the early 60s. The author also thinks that France still wear adidas. So saying that only Blackburn, Huddersfield and Forest will be in Umbro next season is more likely a display of ignorance rather than inside knowledge. But we will have a new kit next season, who will make it is anyone's guess. My guess is Lotto due to the Swiss connection.

I would take Nike over Adidas or Kappa, simply because if Golf shirts are anything to go by, and you are not the Male model super slim physique portrayed everywhere, when you buy a Nike XL golf shirt it fits very comfortably. Whereas Adidas xl shirts for example cut you in half especially under the arms and across the shoulders. The cut of Kappa shirts always makes me think that if you are carrying just an ounce of pork too much it looks like it would fit like a rubber Johnny.

We shall see, just hope Mr Cortese gets over his alleged dislike of stripes and we get the more traditional look back to our kit.

Our Umbro contract runs out this season so we'd have been getting a new kit no matter what. Nike have bought the valuable contracts (Man City and England) and will take those over, ours is expiring so we could end up with anyone (apart from Umbro, who basically don't exist any more).

Plus even if we were still under Umbro contract it was for two one year shirts a season anyway.

I think they've taken the existing contracts and removed the ones which are expiring or being bought out.

Forest and Blackburn have "proper" contracts with Umbro similar to ours (and get their own unique tweaks to the standard kit templates as a result), but Huddersfield's "Umbro" deal is actually a deal with a Yorkshire-based kit supplier, not Umbro itself, so they may not have any Umbro kit to supply them with.

For some reason I can see us ending up with Macron or for the lolz, Warrior. No idea what we're getting at this stage though.

Would quite like an Adidas kit. Wouldn't be surprised to see us go for an Italian make though.

I'd love to see how they stretch their limited template range to produce something unique for us, Stoke AND Sunderland... one white with red, one red with white, ummmm...

I vote Patrick - a la Rank Xerox 80's number especially the blue away version. :)

Pure speculation here, but I THINK Patrick were owned by JJB - they certainly had Wigan's kit when Dave Whelan still owned JJB and basically only retailed through JJB Kitwear. As JJB are now (mostly) owned by SportsDirect following their recent administration / collapse, I suspect there may not currently be a Patrick brand to be branding kits with.

The closest thing we've had to a "kit changing every three years" was the shorts and socks from the home kit not changing for the last (Theo/nose-breaker) Friends Provident shirt and the first two season (Bale/Playoffs) flybe shirt with the black stripe down the sleeves. That was one of the nice, fan-friendly touches we used to get that you can forget all about now.

The other Prem shirts ranged from 1-2 years, and in the early 2000s we'd established the decent trend of have a 2 year home, with the away and third changing in the alternate year. It meant the club got a decent income every season but there was a nice balance with feeling obliged to fork out for it - which of course I did anyway.

Meanwhile, Spurs have changed all of their kits every season since (approx) 1998, and managed to have 6 outfield shirts including different Euro sponsors last season.

Fair enough. Wondered what had happened to them!

  • 2 weeks later...
I saw this in the Metro this morning and thought of the kit fanatics here ... Umbro have now been sold again ... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2222483/Nike-offloads-Umbro-brand-Iconix-140m-deal.html

Seems like a step on the path to Ashley ownership - sounds like they've only sold the name and right to use the brand to an intermediary, which is in line with what's left of Umbro when the current kit contracts expire.
