ladysaint Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 A lot of threads saying that we used to be a family club but our image has changed dramatically over the last few years. In your opinion are there any clubs in the PL that remain a family club. Norwich for me seem a well run family club and appear to be well respected by other teams as a family club. Jack Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 Fulham, I guess. I don't think the term 'family club' means anything really, just a media catchphrase.
doddisalegend Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 Looked like lots of families at the games I've been to this season. Problem is there seem to be some who think woman and children at football is wrong and that SMS should be filled with 18-35 year old hardmen.... SnailOB Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 When you consider over last few years children received free season tickets with a full paying adult - more 'family' friendly than we have ever had.
tajjuk Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 I think we should make it cheaper for people to bring their kids along, U11's should probably be free if with an adult and U17's should be about half the price they are with when bought with an adult ticket. The small dent in short term income would be outdone by the future gain.

Thats true. The only problem I've found is that is that because the tickets in the family centre are the cheapest in the ground and you dont need to have a child with you to get in then some people choose to sit there when they'd be better off in the Northam or Itchen north. There are quite a few adults who aggressively eff and **** all the way through the match. Yes I know its football and you expect it in most of the ground, but the family centre should be different when youve got under 10s in tow. This Charming Man Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 Family club is just a term used to describe a club that mainly has women and kids sat in the stands like statues and offer very little in terms of atmosphere or hostility. Basically a fan base that is just a bit 'soft'. Clubs like us, Fulham, Norwich, Charlton are perfect examples of this.
cambsaint Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 Define family club. Do you mean clubs owned by families for personal reasons, and not just owned for potential profit for the Shareholders, but also in a way in trust for the local community, like Ipswich used to be with the Cobbolds, and Blackburn Rovers, or do you mean family friendly for supporters. In ownership terms we may qualify as a family club.
lloydie Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 For 'family club' read 'small club'. It just sounds nicer doesn't it?
Hatch Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 Maybe family club means, all members of the family will support that particular clubs, plus their offspring, and then their offspring. The non-family clubs, tend to be the big clubs, and they just support whoever is top of the league when they go to school on the Monday.

Skatesmuff must surely count as a family club - they are all related to each other and have more family connections per person than normal ...... ie their ssiter is also their mother and aunt (and girlfriend), or something like that!! This Charming Man Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 So Charles Green talks about one of the biggest and most successful clubs in the world joining a European Super League and he's branded deluded. Cortese talks about us gaining CL qualification and he's branded a visionary and a 'legend' for showing such desire? Hmmmm....

In all seriousness if it wasn't for this forum i'd have no idea how massive we were. I'd be clueless that we are potentially the fourth best supported club in England which would probably put us in the top 15 in the world and had a catchment area which spanned half of Britain. I'd be completely in the dark about how easy it was to get to the champions league, all you need is a good academy and a decent manager. I would never have known that it is entirely possible that although we are struggling to fill a 32,000 staidum, we could easily fill one much bigger if only we attracted new fans by offering really cheap prices that were only available to them and i had no idea that there were literally millions of floating fans waiting for us to become a top 10 club so they can support us. And of course, as is the case of Charles Green, any other club that has these sort of ambitions or talks about bettering themselves is deluded and arrogant. Whereas we are visionaries with ambition and drive. Thank god for Saintsweb for opening our eyes to all this.
david in sweden Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 I'd read that ..as any club that has a good family centre, where the WHOLE family can go to a game without looking for a bank loan....where even the kids can see the whole game and WAGS don't have to put up with a place where they are surrounded by load-mouthed drunks and loads of bad language. Does that description come into the category of Fantasy Football.. .or do such clubs exist ?

I've been taking my lad to a few games each season since he was 7 and is a rock solid saints fan (even when we were in L1) which isn't bad considering we live in SE London and are surrounded by chelsea, arsenal, spurs fans. So if the ambition is to nuture future fans (esp when you don't live nearby) then it's working. Better segregation would be nice though so i know i'll avoid those two loud mouth fat ginger scumbags next time. I think family club was coined in the 80s when some grounds started introducing defined "family areas".
Dangermouth Posted 12 October, 2012 Share Posted 12 October, 2012 Family club. One that's safe for the family to go to (and they do). I.e. not one full of chavs and hooligans like many clubs were perceived to be (or actually were).
