Migrating from iPhone to Android device

Hi all,

 

I currently have a 2 year old iPhone 4 which is slowly on its way out. Apple have priced themselves out of a customer for the iPhone 5 so I am now certainly looking at moving over to Android.

 

I have about 60GB worth of music stored on my MacBook Pro (yes I've been a bit locked in by Apple in the past few years) and of course its all in iTunes format etc.

 

I actually really like my MacBook and iTunes so I dont want to get rid of that... I just wondered if Android phones work well with this combination? Anyone have any experience with this sort of setup? Is it going to be a painful migration?

I dont really see it as a mistake - its not even one of my options (to stick with Apple that is). I still think they make great products, but others have raised their game and make equally good products at a price I can afford/justify.

I'm not sure how valid these price comparisons are. I looked at the price of a sim-free iphone 5 compared to a sim-free Samsung Galaxy S3 and the former is £529 compared tt the latter's £450. Hardly a significant difference imo.

Again, thats fine if you can pay up front like that. But for me its more like getting a £20 per month contract and most of the iPhone rivals are free, whereas you still gotta put down a few hundred quid plus the contract for an iPhone5.

I've not long bought my first smart phone: a Samsung using Windows 7.5 and it does everything I need. Unlocked it cost me £142, so although I'm sure some people have the money and the need, I'd still look around before committing so much money.

Because that is what I truly value in a phone- the casing that I never feel anyway since every phone I have owned goes straight in a case.

Yes I do and after all apple is a company that spends more money on lawyers than engineers and they don't come cheap...

 

Not to mention any sensible company would have to spend money to correctly licence any images they use in their publicity.

ur not going to get 60gbs of music onto an android device, jus old skool drag n drop the stuff u do want.

 

do u use ur MacBook for anything else other than music n web browsing? if so I dont see any reason for keeping it, may as well downgrade to a netbook.

For music on android you may want to consider converting to lower bitrate ogg files. I have a somewhat complicated system where I have ripped all our CD's to FLAC format. As this is lossless it means I can convert to anything else without reripping or degrading the audio by going between lossy formats. I then use dbpoweramp batch converter to convert to both a high bitrate mp3 (typically 192 or 256) for streaming in house and to low bit rate ogg (typically 80) to go on phones.

It's slow to start, slow to run and slow to shut down. Every time I turn on the PC I get a constant stream of updates, then I'm told to restart the PC. I don't like the concept of dlls or the registry, everything should be stored with the program itself. Every few months you have to re-install it and clean out all the sludge. I don't like GUIs, I use the keyboard wherever possible. Later versions of

Office have got rid of (or hidden deeply) the keyboard shortcuts.

Well, it was all the keyboard shortcuts, I.e. all the underlined letters in the drop-down menus. I didn't like the ribbon and the way that it's items changed dynamically. As I said, I prefer to use the keyboard shortcuts for the menu, especially on my laptops. I think that made me a 'power user' even though I didn't know it.

 

I don't like the way that I am supposed to buy new versions of everything every couple of years. I have several PCs in my business and it's not my responsibility to fun Microsoft's bloatware empire. I paid hundreds of pounds for these programs and if they're full of bugs then I expect Microsoft to fix them, not expect me to buy a new load with a whole new load of bugs.

I got a MacBook Air a couple of years ago. Turns on and off quickly, rarely has an update, easy to use.

amazes me his entrenched ppl become in thus debate and mostly over nigley things, how often does a pc crash? how long is a piece of string? my main desktop is 6 years old, I have upgraded windows, ram, HDD & graphics card on it and I can't remember it crashing once and currently it does everything I need it to and I have never pushed it beyond its capabilities other than trying out the best graphics in a game in first boot.

 

still yet to hear a real reason as to why ud pay double the price for a shinier, less compatible machine other than brand preference. I still find most MacBook users only use an i5 processor for browsing facebook and a music library.
