tpbury Posted 10 October, 2012 Share Posted 10 October, 2012 The guy who got done for posting sick messages about April Jones and Madeline McCann. Yes he is an absolute ***t, yes he deserves a good kicking / prison sentence whatever. But isn't this just easy 'crime' solving for plod? Quite apart from other incendiary comments which have also been looked at, I think the nature of the investigations probably go along the lines of: 'We need to nick some people - what's trending on twitterface?' The more people that respond, the more likely a person is to get nicked. Does that qualify as investigation? Is it really worse than someone getting their head kicked in on a Friday night - where should the resources go to prevent such crimes? I just think it's easy wins for plod - if somebody is inciting violence on facetwitcrap, then go and deal with the people who are incited, before pressing an 'arrest' button. CB Saint Posted 10 October, 2012 Share Posted 10 October, 2012 Seems disproportionate use of resources, although they may be stamping on it now so it doesn't develop into a bigger, more unmanageable problem
TopGun Posted 10 October, 2012 Share Posted 10 October, 2012 Don't agree at all. These sites have audiences of millions so people have to learn the hard way that they cannot pour out their bigoted or warped opinions and expect to get away with it. Social media is a learning curve for society and people need to understand the parameters now before it's too late.
Gambol2K9 Posted 10 October, 2012 Share Posted 10 October, 2012 It's a shame free speech doesn't exist anymore. You've got to think the police could spend that time far more productively. A prison sentence for that is ridiculous. What a waste of tax payers money, is he really a threat to the public?!
Um Bongo Posted 10 October, 2012 Share Posted 10 October, 2012 If someone reports it, the police have to look into it. The law is written and it is *rightly or wrongly* an offence.
Viking Warrior Posted 10 October, 2012 Share Posted 10 October, 2012 I agree a prison sentence is a bit harsh, but if the guy who put what ever it was about April goes to prison then how comes the muslim guy who used social media to preach hatred and death against british soldiiers gets community service. There has to be a consistent approach . But I will wait till judgment is passed in the April Jones comment .
Viking Warrior Posted 10 October, 2012 Share Posted 10 October, 2012 Are social media crimes the big money spinner to fill the coffers of local authorities. police funds and the government following on from the millions taken in from speed camera's etc? tpbury Posted 10 October, 2012 Author Share Posted 10 October, 2012 Point is, you could post the same mind garbage on an obscure service such as saintsweb, but not get prosecuted.

buctootim Posted 10 October, 2012 Share Posted 10 October, 2012 Totally disproportionate. If he had posted that crap on a memorial website set up by her family, as some trolls have done in the past for similar cases, then fair enough. 12 weeks for expressing views on his own facebook site is wrong. TBF, there is a HUGE difference between "expressing your views" and making sexually explicit remarks and "offensive" jokes about a missing child. Sergei Gotsmanov Posted 10 October, 2012 Share Posted 10 October, 2012 It is highly dangerous to start locking people up for saying things that just make them look like tw*ts. Will we one day get locked up for saying something that somebody else does not like. It is a slippery slope. I look back at that poor guy from Southampton that was locked up for sometime for starting a riot in Southampton during the August riots. He cleary wasn't being serious but the police had to justify having 400 officers (I think it was as many as that) scanning social media sites. If its in the public domain, and someone complains, the police are duty bound to investigate, and take appropriate action.

Viking Warrior Posted 11 October, 2012 Share Posted 11 October, 2012 (edited) Thanks top gun. So there needs to be consistency in sentencing, look at this case which I found extremel offensive. He should have gone to jail A man who posted an offensive Facebook message following the deaths of six British soldiers has been given a community order. Azhar Ahmed, 20, of Fir Avenue, Ravensthorpe, West Yorkshire, was found guilty in September of sending a grossly offensive communication. He said he did not think the message, which said "all soldiers should die and go to hell", was offensive. Ahmed was also fined £300 at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court. He will have to do 240 hours of community service over a two-year period. badgers. If they fine somebody everytime a negative comment was made on a social media site then it can go into the coffers of the courts local authorities etc. How much will ashley cole get fined for his twitter comment re the FA FOBOC's Edited 11 October, 2012 by Viking Warrior
