I inadvertantly deleted the last episode of Mrs Biggs the other day, much to Mrs Sums annoyance. Luckily I had a recent update to Sky which has now given me an option for Catch Up TV whereby you can download from IPlayer, ITV Player etc.

So I downloaded the missing episode and we began to watch. Suprisingly, when it came to the ad break the program title appeared for a couple of seconds and then the program continued. That's bloody useful I thought. When I then looked at the program info I saw that the recording length was 65 minutes, however the program when broadcast was 1 hour, 30 minutes.

I'd often wondered how much time was taken up by adverts and there we have it, nearly one third!!!!

I was "catching up" with Sinbad the other day (I know, I know!!), a program scheduled in to an hour slot, yet the catchup lasted 45 mins.

Most of the shows that I get through other mean normally last 40-45 mins for an hour schedule.

ITV is horrific for adverts. Never watch anything on there unless it's football, at which point when the ads come on I can nip off to get another beer.

ITV is contractually limited to fewer minutes of advert per hour than the satellite channels are. Sky etc are even worse.

Like many things many people in this country slag off -- NHS, state education, etc --- the BBC is actually bloody brilliant by international standards. To have no adverts at all is just so much better.

Spent a month in America this year. They have far more frequent breaks than we do. Drove me mad!

Ads, titles, Ads, first 12 mins of show, ads, next 12, etc... ads, closing joke and credits, ads onto the next show!

Not so bad on some channels and for movies.

24 is made up of 24 "1 hour" long episodes. Strangely enough each episode after the ad's taken out is only 40 minutes long. That means it should actually be called 16 (if my math's is right which it probably isn't)

Wrong

Titles - ads - clips of what's coming up later - ads - 6 minutes of show - clips of what's coming later - ads - recap of show so far - another 6 minutes of actual show- another look at what's coming up - ads - etc

Adverts are sh!t. Fortunately, my viewing habits have changed to the extent where I really don't have to deal with them. I watch very little TV in the traditional sense - mostly live sport - and I'll pause that at half time and do something else for fifteen minutes.

Agree with Ken Tone's sentiments about the excellent BBC service, and would add that I believe the BBC keeps adverts on commercial channels at remotely bearable lengths. American TV is pretty much unwatchable because of the huge number of commercial breaks. Remember trying to watch Jaws on a US network once in a fit of jetlag. Gave up after three hours.

Our schedules have been dominated by shows that appeal to the most amount of people, precisely because advertisers want to put their products in front of the most amount of people, and will pay a premium to do it. Countless excellent TV programmes have been cancelled because advertisers didn't make enough money, loads more will go this year. Perhaps worse is when advertisers get editorial oversight over the content.

Fortunately, I happen to believe we're in the middle of a paradigm shift when it comes to TV. Anyone who is using a DVR is already depriving an advertiser of an audience. Well done you! :) In terms of scripted programmes such as series, TV is actually the worst place to attempt to watch them. Potential viewers are far better off going the DVD/streaming route. In this time of entertainment tailored to the individual, just the concept of TV broadcasting is looking a little shaky for everything except live shows.

Do they think we all suffer from short term memory loss?

Quite the opposite. They want that stuff drummed into your head so you'll remember it forever. Repetition is key to doing that.

Many campaigns succeed too. I still remember stuff from 30 years ago with a lot of clarity. The image of a van load of workies singing about their McCains chips looms large. Do I really still need that bolox kicking around in my head, thirty years on? :)
