Yeah cos panicking and sacking the manager is a policy that has always worked out well for us in the past isn't it.

Oh, hang on....

Worked and it hasn't... Depends who comes in

Got rid of Pardew and got promoted twice on the bounce

Got rid of gray and did ok

Got rid of wgs/he left and did not do so well

I've taken a look at my knee and it's complete lack of jerk. I appreciate the perceived substitution mistakes, even agree with that.

Cannot deny the large learning curve for Nigel this year. This team is not yet the finished article in terms of depth. A lot of room for improvement.

I'd say no, largely because I think Nige deserves the chance and because I like the way we play under him.

Cannot leave that unqualified though. I was really disappointed with the capitulation of the Championship title last year. Blackpool games were awful. Pompey way closer than it should have been.

Organise us better when we don't have the ball, keep our best players on the pitch, stop the team from sitting deep all the time.

So keep our "best players" on the park even if they ain't performing? Sounds great.

Even in the second half, we weren't playing deep the whole time. Plenty of periods of play when we were either passing the ball well or pinging the ball into their box again and again (Chaplow teeing Yoshida up repeatedly toward the end of the game). Credit to Fulham for stepping their game up second half, but they got a lot of unnecessary assistance from us.

Still feel we were better team throughout, just that periods of ascendance were more equally distributed in second half.

Sacking Adkins would be just foolish. He deserves at least a season in this league before any changes are made. There are some ejaculators on here that need to go to the bathroom with a box of Kleenex to satisfy their need for instant gratification.

I like what you did there, clever, well done Les.

Doubt it. Adkins has said time and again we drop too deep when we shouldn't, as have many of the pundits. Only people who will stop that are the players or whoever it is that replaces the ones that don't. That and getting the m/f to track back properly/when they should.

That's one way to look at it. Not the way I see it though.

Just to take the discussion in a slightly different direction .. Nigel himself looked like a man expecting bad news. His demeanor was a radical departure from his normal ebullient self both at the match and PC. He spent a fair amount of time sitting on the bench just looking miserable and seemed not to want to celebrate when we opened the scoring, finally giving a desultory clap whilst staying in his seat.

This is very unlike our Nige and I have to say he did look like a condemned man. All the above comments about it only being fair to give Nigel more time are correct, but something has changed, something doesn't look quite right.

Nigel appeared to be looking over his shoulder after the Coventry game and his current body language tends to suggest that some pre-determined time frame is expiring and he fears the worst. I couldn't begin to second guess someone like Cortese or what he may do, but he may not be as time generous as some on here should he decide that a different direction is necessary.

Because we are just utterly woeful at the back with a manager unable to change that... We have to win our home games against Fulham and Wigan....

How can any manager improve our defence? Individually they ain't good enough. Collectively they ignore the manager and drop deep. Any new manager has to work with these players.

Wgs did it with telfer and Paul Williams at the back... When we were terrible.

He made us hard to beat and we defended brilliantly.... We also had our players soon enough being able to last 90 mins...

To say another manager would not do anything different is daft...

Another manager may not keep lallana on the pitch and allow him to go wandering.... May not have bought Hooiveld on... May not have taken Lambert off

Forget telfer etc, the league has moved on and we have the players we have. Our defensive unit is the problem, not the manager.

Out ot interest, who should have come on instead of jos?

Who gets the credit for our promotion then? Presumably Adkins had nothing to do with it?

Originally there was a 5 year plan; with 2 years set aside to get out of League 1. But Cortese did an interview after sacking Pardew, saying that expectations had changed with us spending a good deal of money in the January window i.e. he expected promotion from it. It was an original 5 year plan but that soon changed, according to Cortese himself.

........and I don't think it means that NA has 2 years left either. It surely is a new 5 year plan to the Euro standard, now that we've made it to the Prem.

Getting " half-good and surviving" ín this league is something most of the teams struggle to do...year after year ...and don't always succeed.

If Newcastle have guts enough to give Pardew an 8 year contract extension - surely we shouldn't be looking to sack Nigel after just 8 weeks !

Why would we do that then? What needs sacking is the idiot who organised our summer recruitment and left us with 10 million strikers and advanced midfielders and not enough defenders. We know NA wanted central defenders because he said so, we got Ramirez instead.

Couldn't agree more - I'm sure NA feels a bit stitched up because he'll be getting criticised for our poor performance in an area he has always said we needed to strengthen, only for some muppet behind the scenes to screw up the negotiations (I am making assumptions here but thats how it looks). I don't think anyone expected us to blitz this league but i think we shold expect to be doing better than we are, especially with the transfer budget we clearly had!

Unfortunately I think Nige will be the fall guy which is a big shame but we need to get someone in who can make what we have got play better - maybe he needs a director of football to help out?!?!

Football is a results based business and Cortese has a very ambitious plan to execute. I think we all know how this is going to end.

Eh? I'm in the keep Nigel camp.

As am I but he has to be responsible for our defensive unit. It's his team. It's his defensive unit.

You seem to be making out that he is an innocent bystander to our defence.

I think with hindsight that these were indeed the warning signs that we would have the torrid time this season unless we shored up the defence.

He can only shuffle the pack he's been given. I think it unlikely that another manager will get more out of the players that we have.

for many among us it was foresight.Half the forum knew we needed defenders, Adkins knew it because he said so but at the end of the day we spent about 22 million on attacking players with no defensive qualities whatsoever and a measly 5 million on the defenders we needed so desperately. This is like many home owners, the roof needs fixing but they spend 2K£ on a big f*cku

barbecue.
