Saints v West Ham build up

Cheese on Toast

Harsh on Fox who has looked solid for us V Fulham and for Scotland. Might be he was carrying that injury beforehand and has looked better because he's got over it.

That's the only change I'd make though, I definitely agree with Lallana in Ramirez's role.

Agree to a certain degree re: Fox. I just feel the balance looked 'right' when Clyne switched to left back vs Villa. Might have been more "inspite of" than "because of" though I guess.

I'm keen to see Mayuka get a start though (which is equally harsh on Rodriguez)

Agree with that in theory. The tough bit is that against Man Utd if we used up a man to stop Scholes then it would just have been one of their other world class players who would have had the time and space to hurt us.

What we needed to do vs utd was to keep attacking - that was what caused us to be leading in the first place.

IMO by taking off a forward and bringing on a man marker it would have made no difference as we would have still dropped deep as nobosy up top would have kept the ball for any length of time.

That said - against a team with an obvious star man (like Portugal with Ronaldo, or Saints with MLT) it makes sense to stop that player as best you can.

We replaced three effective players, Utd kept the ball with Scholes directing the traffic, the ball wasn't held up front, we dropped deep and were picked off. If Scholes had been disrupted we may have been able to get the ball off him and it might have allowed the forward/midfield players to defend higher up the field. If good teams keep the ball, lesser teams tend to back off and surrender the midfield. Far better IMO to defend higher up the field by high tempo pressing rather than low pace backing off. We had plenty of players in our penalty area but nobody got stuck into Van Persie the real danger and allowed Scholes to dictate the play.

Too many changes for me. Richardson is poor. Would much rather have Fox LB and Clyne RB, than Clyne out of position and Richardson RB.

Lallana has to play wide for me as well. He can use his trickery much better from that position and will embarress Demel if he is fit. Harsh on J-Rod as well who I thought was impressive vs Fulham and will cause West Ham problems.

Who cares...whatever happened to drawing a line under it and moving onto the next one. Man Utd was 6 weeks ago...get over it.

I've said before that for me the thing with Fox is who he is up against. He looked okay against Duff as he has no pace, but got destroyed by AOC at the Emirates. When a winger has pace, Fox gets caught out of position a lot more easily, as he can't get back quickly enough from his forward runs. I guess on Saturday he would be up against Jarvis? A decent winger and a good test to see if he can make it at this level.

With Ramirez presumable still out, I fully expect we will see the same front four as started against Fulham, with Lambert off Rodriguez. I would like to see Mayuka given a go at some point though, even if just off the bench

Can you name a LB who would've stood a chance against Bale that night? Fox has done ok for Scotland, put in some good crosses and looked assured. And yes, I watched both of the games.

He was caught out last night, he was ball watching, never once checked behind him and was done on the back post. He never saw the player coming in for an easy header. It's a big fault he has, he rarely checks his blind side.

That and on the rare occassions he gets forward past the halfway line it takes him the rest of thw half to get back.

His only real asset is that he is good on the ball and has quality set piece delivery. Can't imagine him figuring a lot beyond Jan.

I think Jarvis plays on the left, or at least he generally does. He might switch to the right because vaz te is injured.

Injury wise from looking at their Forum they have a few injury worries, Reid didn't play for New Zealand, Collison, Tomkins, Demel and O'Neill all rumoured to be injured.

Adkins needs to stop trying to be clever with his subs cost us 4 points this season. Puncheon is a fab player to have when we are up because he can carry ball away from danger, as for taking lambert off it for the first time made me question the managers long term credentials. Any news on Ramirez? He is genuine class.

Beattie better than lambert? Whatever lol. In

My opinion Adkins Subs are starting to have a really detrimental effect.

In what way is that funny. ..

When Lambert continuously scores in the prem.... Leads a team to 8th and become the top English striker in the country. When there are a greater amount of top strikers... Then you can compare

Oh, and plays for england

Yoshida and fonte! Two midgets at the back then ? Carroll will have a fine time against those two! Jos and fonte for me at centre backs with a place for chaplow in the middle as we have been to easy to roll over away from home !

Definitely, not probably. SRL is a great player but there was a reason a big club paid millions for Beatts

Just because a club pays millions doesn't mean he was good. Don't get me wrong, I liked Beatts when he played for us, but often a player works well in a particular environment but doesn't translate well elsewhere. Even Mick Channon struggled when he went to Man City (not to mention Torres at Chelski). Some managers get more out of players than others by playing to their strengths. It cannot be denied that Beattie had a poor first touch, compared to SRL who is actually a very gifted footballer. They were/are both top strikers of the ball, and both are deadly from the spot, but I would take Lambert any day if given a straight choice - he brings much more to the team.

Jos ? I'm off to the bookies to bet on a penalty or an own goal for West Ham then.

If Lambert was now the age that Beattie was when he left then Rickie would be viewed at 10m plus IMO, same as Fletcher.

What has Chaplow done to deserve a start?

Pardon my curiosity kind sir but have you been on the Sunny Delight?

What has Chaplow done to deserve a start?[/quote Why not ? We have been ripped to shreds in the last two away games playing tippy tappy football and when we lose the ball we look lightweight in getting it back. West ham will be quite physical and will play 5 across the middle with carroll up front so maybe chaplow will be a bit more robust in the middle . I would play morgan Davis and chaplow middle 3 with lallana on left punch on right with lambert up front . Jos fonte in centre backs fox and clyne with gazza in goal.

The fact you have Hooiveld in your team makes me doubt your opinion on all this.

not sure if you've watched any of our games so far but hooiveld's confidence looks shot at the moment. would stick with fonte and yoshi at the back.

Let's not forget that Jos Hooiveld scored both and indeed are ONLY goals against them last season. He'll be buzzing for this one and I reckon he should start, he always does well against WHU! :D

The problem is that he's done rather well against SFC so far this season.

His confidence was clearly shot after his last mistake, given his Tweets after the game. I think he needs a chance to regain his confidence and come back stronger.

Fonte, on the other hand, has been far more impressive alongside Yoshida so deserves to keep his place.

Odd really, since just weeks ago I was suggesting the exact opposite.
