Saints v West Ham build up

Boruc not in goal for the u21s today Vs Spurs. Reckon he could make his debut this weekend ?

Quite possibly. Or is injured.

It would be slightly harsh on Gazza - but IMO having someone like Boruc behind the defence would help them out too.

Gazza could well be a class keeper for us, but the experience of Boruc would help at this moment in time.

Good, at least he has some sort of realism to where West Ham could end up, unlike almost every pundit in England who have them down as safe midtable already.

This is one of the away games we know we can turn up and stand a good chance of all three points provided we play right, but if we do it badly (including have more random mistakes) we can go home with nothing...

Would still take a draw right now.

In fact none of our regular keepers were involved with the U21s today, I thought Cropper was supposed to be their regular man but

it was someone else today. The U21s lost 4-2 anyway, only Reeves from the main group involved I think, unless you count Stephens and Shaw (who went off injured apparently).

I think we can win, although obviously they're going to pose a real threat aerially. Neutralise their long-ball play and we can do them. Would love to see us beat them, bunch of tossers they are.

Perhaps a bit of added bite in midfield would be good to battle with Nolan, Diame and Noble?

--------Gazza--------

Clyne-Fonte-Yoshi-Fox

----Davis--Morgan----

-------Chaplow-------

Mayuka--------Lallana

-------Lambert-------

Was torn on Puncheon. He had a good first half vs Fulham but a pretty woeful second half. Mayuka's pace could be useful on the break after clearing some of the many set pieces we will be facing.

Has Mayuka ever played on the wing? I see him suggested to play there on a lot of match threads but haven't heard that he's done it before and Adkins has never put him there.
Think its a case of most fans not dropping Lambert from the Centre Forward position and knowing that Rodriguez would be the 2nd choice there anyway, therefore the only place that they can think he might fit is wide right, mainly due to his pace. There is some logic in it I guess. How much have any of us really seen of Mayuka? About 30 minutes all told?

It's a 4-3-3 formation and therefore arguably devoid of natural "wingers". Puncheon isn't a true winger, neither is Lallana. Playing a 4-3-3 (or 4-5-1, whatever its being labelled as) Mayuka is not going to play up front on his own. Therefore, to accommodate him, he'll either have to play on the right side or we adopt a 4-4-2 and he occupies the old Billy Sharp role.

I'd still rather have Puncheon or Guly in that role, as it is a reasonable assumption that both are better defensively than Mayuka. Would be happy to see Mayuka chucked into that role if we're chasing the game and going all out in attack.

For me:

-------------------Boruc------------------

Clyne------Fonte--------Maya---------Fox

-----------------Morgan------------------

----------Davis------------JWP------------

Puncheon-------------------------Lallana--

-----------------Lambert-----------------

What about Dan Seabourne has a DM to man mark Nolan?

I love how our answer to providing "bite" in midfield is to play 10st Chaplow in CM.

Maybe Richardson to man mark Noble - he dictates the play for them.

Actually - Richardson and Seaborne in CM with Hooiveld at left mid to block Demel from playing the diag up to Carroll.

What do you think Derry?

Starting to resmble a team with passion. Would also make Chaplow captain because Lallana is a powderpuff motivator and Chaplow will "get into them" which will motivate the team.

Because Clyne is short I would put him up front and play Lambert at RB to deal with balls to the back post.

For this game I would sit Cortese on the bench so he can growl at the players and if we go a goal down can say he is not going to pay them. Also this might put pressure on NA to make good subs. We can bring on Butterfield for Lallana just to stiffen the side up - and he can man mark Demel.

It's a well known fact that Chaplow, despite a criminal lack of skill on the ball, is an amazing tackler and all the times he has been booked/sent off are because the refs out to get him and his passion because they want "true footballers" to be stamped out of the modern game...

In all seriousness the best way to play WH is is to keep the ball and be strong offensively.

They love to get teams pinned back on the edge of their own box and thats when they keep pumping good balls into the box and inevitably score because its hard to get out.

The crowd tend to get restless if they arent having much possession and thats when the long balls become hopeful rather than calulated.

If we let them come onto us from the KO then we have no chance, we will sink deeper into our half and they will score which is pretty much what happened last year there.

We need to come out to dominate possession which is what NA wants us to do anyway. Make them a bit more ragged and the attacking composure they have demonstrated at time this season will disappear slightly.

While Chaplow certainly wouldn't be my choice for our central midfield, I can see why some see him as an option - it's not about his "tackling", but his work rate to close down and harry oppossing players, something that will be vital in a game like West Ham. His disciplinary record all that bad? Only stand out moment I can think of was the challenge at Barnsley last season.

Can understand it to a degree. Worth noting that Morgan has made more interceptions than any other prem player so far - yet some on here doubt his defensive ability.

The issue with Chaplow is more when he has the ball than when he doesn't.

Personally I would rather JWP or Cork played CM as on the ball they are far superior- if we keep the ball well that is going to harm WH more than the 'Chaplow Bite'.

We need to tighten up Krackers and I've heard that playing defenders in CM is the way to do this.

I've also keep hearing that Chaplow is the man to provide bite in midfield so I've tried to encorporate the feedback of the board into this starting line up.

Playing West Ham is apparently hopeless but I can only hope that Adkins does read this and gets the help he needs as he's clearly out of his depth at this level, as shown by not bringing on Seabourne to man mark Scholes against Utd (as suggested by Derry, FA level 1 coaching certified)

Lallana and Puncheon need to come out; there's no room for luxury fancy dans against a combative opposition such as West Ham. Get Danny Butterfield in at RM and Luke Shaw LM, and then I think you've got the makings of a solid setup. That'll shut up shop properly, in fact we'd be completely impregnable.

If Chaplow plays he'll probably get himself sent off. Wouldn't be surprised if there is a sending off in this game however. Nolan maybe.

This stuff about Chaplow's record is a complete myth. I think he has been sent off 2 or 3 times in his whole career, only once for us.

I thought you liked CB's playing in CM?

What I and one of the Saints FA Cup winning team agreed on was take off a forward, leave the midfield and shape but bring on a defender to close mark Scholes. A close marker takes no part in the team game, stays tight on the mark and disrupts that player. The defender would not play as a midfielder because the only role is to stop the mark from playing. The game is then 9 v 9 and 1 v 1. In the MU game SAF pinpointed Scholes as the difference, we made it easy for him to play the ball around and pressurise our back four with his accuracy. A tight marker would have disrupted him and knowing Scholes's temper possibly got him into trouble.

As for CBs in midfield, there is a role for mobile defensive players that can pass, in front of the central defenders, as a front sweeper. Baird played that role against us and effectively last night v Portugal where NI snatched a draw. It has it's place especially if the back four isn't that good.

Agree with that in theory. The tough bit is that against Man Utd if we used up a man to stop Scholes then it would just have been one of their other world class players who would have had the time and space to hurt us.

What we needed to do vs utd was to keep attacking - that was what caused us to be leading in the first place.

IMO by taking off a forward and bringing on a man marker it would have made no difference as we would have still dropped deep as nobosy up top would have kept the ball for any length of time.

That said - against a team with an obvious star man (like Portugal with Ronaldo, or Saints with MLT) it makes sense to stop that player as best you can.

Harsh on Fox who has looked solid for us V Fulham and for Scotland. Might be he was carrying that injury beforehand and has looked better because he's got over it.

That's the only change I'd make though, I definitely agree with Lallana in Ramirez's role.
