Saints v West Ham build up

Cheese on Toast

i really hope our defenders turn up in this one, so we can shove their comments back down their throats
Their lack of basic football knowledge speaks volumes "Fact: Every season for the last 10 years at least one of the bottom three on 1st September has gone down.

Take your pick:Liverpool, QPR, Southampton" and "It's hard to see Southampton getting out of the relegation zone isn't it. "

It's hard to see Southampton getting out of the relegation zone isn't it. Inexperienced players, inexperienced manager, their big signing on the treatment table

Given the fact that we're not in the relegation zone, then yeah, absolutely impossible to see us getting out of it at this stage.

Such bitter children, that's funny. Get our best 11 out, spend the next week working on our defensive frailties and I reckon we could spank them. They've played one top team in arsenal and got destroyed, they're in a false position and will start crashing down the league soon. 3-1 victory for us I reckon.

I have never met such a grouply deluded set of fans. Ok you meet the occasional fan from a club who is deluded, but these lot are on another level. I got a text from a WHU mate the other day, saying: 'We're going places this season, playing some great football and winning games, it doesn't get much better than this'. Quite incredible seeing as they cant put 3 passes together without playing the long ball.

Not sure why they care about us either. Get the impression it's because we play good football. Jealous maybe ?

They need to get that chip off their shoulder. It's like Brighton mkII. Who would have thought massive old West Ham would be bothered by little old Southampton.

I would be confident of 3 points if we played ourselves at home

So if we played ourselves it is pretty fair to say that both teams are even but if we were at home and ourselves were away, the home advantage would be enough to take all 3 points?

Are you saying our home form is much better than our away form?

Excellent insight! Next you will be comparing Lambert to Grant Holt.

It is a fascinating experiment though. Can you or TDD or MLG actually play this game (over 2 legs) on the computer?

Begs the question who would you support? Would you cheer all goals or boo all goals?

Just think, somebody might get sent off for fouling themselves.

Football, you know, isn't it?

Marvellous.

just seen this on the wet spam web site.

they feel they will beat us comfortably and they hate us and our manager.

Lol, not seen so much bitterness. Jealousy is a cruel mistress, they will probably beat us with their terrible football but and they will probably stay up this yeark but in the long run they will go back down, too much debt and hoofball doesn't get you up the league. Would laugh though if we went up there and just passed it around them and that lump Carroll missed a few sitters, interesting to see what excuses they would come up with.

They also seem to be very convinced that they are going to finish comfortably mid table despite their easy start to the season, I watched them against Norwich and they looked very average, they essentially rely on the diagonals and set pieces. hope their players start thinking like that they will be comfortably mid table. Lets see how they are doing by xmas and see if they are still so cocky, after us they have Wigan but then in November and December they have Man City (H), Newcastle (A), Stoke (H), Spurs (A), Man Utd (A), Chelsea (H), Liverpool (H), West Brom (A), Everton (H) and Arsenal (A).

Genuinely think we'll win. It's about time our forward play suddenly carved open a team away from home and the defence stays solid for 90 minutes. Might be optimistic because I'm looking forward to the away day so much but there is a funny 2-0 win in my mind.. Wish it was tomorrow though, damn internationals against San Marino getting in the way!

Exactly, our attack might be good but the thought of Carrol and Vaz Te going against our back four will give me nightmares! Im very glad theres an initernational break atm as it give us time to recover from injuries, let the players rest a bit too and hopefully get players like Jos to sort his head out so he doesnt look so petrified next time he's called upon.

Pretty sure Vaz Te is injured, nor is he any good anyway. It's also not like you get much of a surprise element from Carroll either , I think our defence will be happier defending against Carroll than the likes of Van Persie or Aguero or having the Arsenal midfield run at them. His record of 6 goals in his last 45 premier league appearances isn't exactly terrifying form.

Vaz Te is out for quite a while, had an op on his damaged shoulder yesterday.Probably won't be back until December at the earliest.

West Ham are what I would call a well drilled outfit, they know what they're doing and they know their jobs. They are packed with premiership experience and this shows, they have that grit and know how to get over the line in tight games in the PL. We don't, yet. We're learning, but learning slowly.

I don't quite think WHU are this mega club which some of their fans are making them out to be, they're a middle of the road PL club - that's pretty much their levle unless they get serious investment. I'd like to think it's the sort of game we can make our mark on, but I just get a feeling that their tactics will slightly come out on top.

He's only played for 1 game, but we will miss Gaston's calmness on the ball and his ability to hold onto it in tight situations. It would have been handy to have him as WHU like to keep it tight, make the pitch small and crowd the middle.

I think we've got a chance, but wouldn't be at all surprised if they were just a little too shrewd than us at the moment.

Think we showed it at Everton as well. They just had 20 minutes where they tore us apart, for the rest of the game we were very much in control and looked like scoring.

True and West Ham are no way as good as Everton, nor have the players that compare with Baines, Pienaar or Jelavic. They are drilled and organised but I can't see them over running teams, they more grind teams down. If we can starve them of the ball with our passing, and cut out the stupid defensive errors we can get a result and particularly if we compete for the second ball well (as Carroll will win headers). They lack invention and have looked a bit plodding and predictable at times. Norwich who have defended pretty poorly this season defended quite comfortably against them although it was at home.

It all really depends if our defence is up for a scrap and doesn't give them easy chances to score, if we make West Ham work to get chances I think we can outplay them. Some big 'ifs' though.

Pienaar is vastly overrated, Fellaini is a good player though.

State the obvious why don't you...

On a serious note, my concern is that we are going to likely have the midget duo of JWP and Davis, (both under 5ft imho :p ) against some towering powerful africans who will literally destroy them through strength and not having to jump to win headers. The only plus side is that with no Vaz Te we may not get a rodgering down our left. However, nice diagonal balls to the back post and u have carrol vs the landlover clyne. I his feet do leave the ground it will only be to fall over.

All this said and done, I'm sitting in the west ham section with a gills supporting mate, if we are winning I am fully intending to stand up and sing "we are southampton, we're taking the ****" about 3min before the end and when I have halfway down the stairs ;)

I would love a cheeky 1-0 win tbh, maybe with taylor getting sent off and AL diving to win a penalty.... ahhh, that would be heaven!

Maybe on his own but his combination with Baines is deadly, best left side in the Premiership at the moment.

yeh seemed obvious to me but then look at some of comments in this thread, Carroll is a threat yes but a lot easier to handle than what most teams have so far thrown at us.

Also it's Diame that I think will be a big problem, you highlight our slightly lightweight midfield that he could bully easily if on song, however they do have the 5ft 9 Noble in there.

I also think it's more likely jarvis cutting in from the right and crossing to the back post to Carroll against Fox that could be the worry, knocking it down to Nolan.

No surprise there. They have no class as shown throughout last season. One of their 6 foot plus knuckle head fans had a go at my dad outside the ground after we beat them and then he ran away!

Plus they still don't play football, no matter what their ridiculous fans think.

Had a quick look on KUMB some posters on there now suggesting they should go more defensive and try and nick a point! Reckon we would happily take an away point ATM! Nice to see they don't care about us with their 7 page thread compared to our frankly obsessive 2 page thread on here though ;D

Actually from the evidence I have seen this season they have changed their style quite a bit, and are now playing some reasonably decent stuff on the floor. They still mix it up a bit when they feel like it though, which is a good thing, changing your tactics to suit, pity Woy did not do that on Friday, still trying to play pretty football around a parked bus.

Agree with this. Makes me laugh that they have always lauded themselves as a traditional footballing club, i.e. playing stylish football. Firstly that's not been true for many a year and its also ironic they end up with Alladyce. And no, West Ham didn't win the '66 world cup, and no Redknapp didn't bring through all the young talent. 1-2 saints.
