baxter Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 Interesting article http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/return-of-the-saint-but-now-hes-bairdinho-8200703.html
Saint Garrett Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 Nice interview, he'll get a clap from me. Always tried hard and never let us down. Scored a few goals as well.
david in sweden Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 Nice interview, he'll get a clap from me. Always tried hard and never let us down. Scored a few goals as well. ...not to put a sour note on a nice article about a good bloke, but his record of " own-goals " is quite impressive too. I know he does score a few for his own side, but I can recall several time (sadly) seeing his name .....on the opponents stats. Guess he's too often the right fella ....in the wrong place..... at the wrong time . '
Saint Garrett Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 Doesn't make him any less of a good player for us, I don't thin he scored that many.

RobM Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 Nothing but respect for him. He did well for us, always seemed an honest player and bloke and left the correct way, at a time when keeping players like him just wasn't an option. I understand he plays a more defensive-midfielder role these days, perhaps we could tempt him back...
Legod Third Coming Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 Deserves a good reception. Lovely lad, good player, did us proud on his debut!!
S-Clarke Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 Great player for us, although the way he left was a little sour (Although i guess he saw what was coming quicker than we did...!). I did enjoy that season with him and Claus at the back, and will never forget that stunning goal at home to Cardiff.
Golden Balls Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 Looking for that goal against Cardiff but can't find it. Absolute stunner
melmacian_saint Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 Still remember his performance at Cardiff. Thought he was great but reckon we needed Fernandes earlier in that game. Good to see him do well, shows our academy can supply any type of PL standard player rather than just the odd star every 3-4 years. And again, insists how the departure of WGS and posterior conversion of Paul Sturrock in a scapegoat imploded the club. Hate you Rupert.
matthewb Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 I can remember a game vs QPR where Jermaine Wright was playing Right Back and was having a mere of a game. Chris Baird started the game at Centre Back and ended up playing CB and RB , with Mr Wright getting in Chris's way most of the time

cellone Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 I was a bit dissapionted that today he didn't do the stand there waving at the ref while the opposition score thing he used to do so well for us.
rpb Posted 7 October, 2012 Posted 7 October, 2012 What is a mere? It's a lake or a pond - Old/Middle English, I think.
SuperSAINT Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11630594/chris-baird-announces-retirement-from-football Mega-bump for this thread. I remember him being a very good centre-back for us when we dropped down the the championship. Wish him all the best in his retirement.
sadoldgit Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 Played well in the final against Arsenal all those years ago.
Badger Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 Full debut in the 2003 Cup Final as I remember.
Bourne Valley Saint Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 I think that he made his debut for us in the 6-1 drubbing away at Arsenal a few weeks before the final. Always a model professional who gave his all for whoever he played for. Wish there were more like him around.
SuperSAINT Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 Full debut in the 2003 Cup Final as I remember. I remember that being so odd at the time. Strachan never gave him a look in the league but played him in the cup final. I also remember (was it Burley?) playing him at centre-back in the championship and being unusually good in the air for somebody standing 5'9".
bazza Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 He was brilliant that last season for us in particular and was fantastic for NI over a long period of time. I bumped into him one day in Southampton years ago with my then young son and he was such a nice bloke.
Appy Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 Was brilliant in 2006/07 for us, despite us being largely terrible defensively, will always remember his screamer against Cardiff.
Whitey Grandad Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 Played well in the final against Arsenal all those years ago. Yes but was at fault for their goal.

I recall him looking at his runners-up medal with a "WTF is this?" expression on his face.
simo Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 Number 1 Chrissy Baird number 2 Chrissy Baird number 3 Chrissy Baird...... As someone else said like Long he was great in the air for a little fella
Micky Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 Decent player, always rated him. Good luck to him in the future. Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
woodsaint Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 Yes but was at fault for their goal. He wasnt, it was Telfer who let Pires get away from him
saint1977 Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 I’d love to see that goal v Cardiff from 2007 again, cannot find it online.
Saint_clark Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 I’d love to see that goal v Cardiff from 2007 again, cannot find it online. It's definitely out there somewhere. I suspect you'll be disappointed though, time has been kind to peoples memories - it was from way out, but it was right in the middle of the goal. Keeper howler.
John Boy Saint Posted 7 February, 2019 Posted 7 February, 2019 I’d love to see that goal v Cardiff from 2007 again, cannot find it online. I use to sit with the Landlord of the Junction Pub, we along with just about everyone in the ground groaned as we seemed to make a total right pigs ear of a free kick until Baird ran onto it and unleashed an absolutely unstoppable missile. The other memory of Chris Baird was v Portsmouth in the latter stages of the game, post match WGS said that he had instructed Chris to keep it sensible and tight at the back to see the game out, next thing he knows Chris Baird is sprinting past me with the ball then cross it for the goal to see the game out.
Whitey Grandad Posted 8 February, 2019 Posted 8 February, 2019 He wasnt, it was Telfer who let Pires get away from him Baird was ball-watching. He tok his attention off his man and Arsenal just skipped past him.
woodsaint Posted 9 February, 2019 Posted 9 February, 2019 Baird was ball-watching. He tok his attention off his man and Arsenal just skipped past him. Lol hes on the goaline so who can skip by him.....
skintsaint Posted 9 February, 2019 Posted 9 February, 2019 God makes me feel old to remember him making his debut to retiring. A success from the youth team and a good solid career thoughout. Good luck in retirement CB!
VectisSaint Posted 9 February, 2019 Posted 9 February, 2019 Yes but was at fault for their goal. He wasn't. Watch again. Baird was on the line, Telfer? Was ball watching, Baird realised and rushed out and tried to put a tackle in but was too late. Blaming Baird for that is just plain wrong.
