Sheaf Saint Posted 1 November, 2012 Share Posted 1 November, 2012 That was the best episode yet. Simply amazing acting in the interrogation scene. I've just caught up on the whole series and I agree about the acting in that scene - absolutely brilliant, but I personally don't believe that's the best the show has offered so far. Claire Danes was simply outstanding in the final couple of episodes of series one. The way she depicted the mania and subsequent depression of bi-polar disorder was probably the best bit of TV acting I have ever seen.
shurlock Posted 1 November, 2012 Share Posted 1 November, 2012 Most of the usual suspects -the Wire (the old man lives in Bodymore), Sopranos, BB etc. Homeland is OK but veers dangerously close to comic book 24 territory and Clare Danes gets on my wick -needy, patronising but always invariably vindicated Louie is amazing - most under-the-radar comedy and surprising that nobody here has picked up on it. Bearsy Posted 1 November, 2012 Share Posted 1 November, 2012 You're right bout Homeland shurlock I watch it for lols but it is mostly pretty dumb. I've often heard people saying Louis CK is a sweet show but I've tried to watch it a couple of times and I ain't been feeling the lols. Bearsy's all time top 5 US TV: 1. Freaks and Geeks 2. Curb Your Enthusiasm 3. The Wire 4. Game of Thrones 5. Breaking Bad I can think of loads more! Last 10 years has been golden age for American TV. CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 2 November, 2012 Share Posted 2 November, 2012 Last ever episode of The Closer last night, bit rushed but not bad, one of the most underrated shows on TV. You are so right. Unlike the more trendy shows many on here are forever praising, this conventionally structured, but superbly realized, series never seemed to receive the attention that I think it probably deserved. But what a heady mix of rock hard realism, office politics, quirky humour, and above all Humanity this unusual series was at its best. Add on a killer cast and scripts to die for, and a TV addict has to ask what more you could possibly want? Broadcast late at night on a obscure channel, it's a great shame this fine programme failed to find a mass viewership here. But if its UK audience was a relatively small one, at least it's encouraging to know that there are still a few of us left who can recognize bloody good Television when we see it. Not since the demise of my beloved (but very different) 'NYPD Blue' and 'Star Trek TNG' have I felt quite so saddened by the death of a mere TV series. pap Posted 2 November, 2012 Share Posted 2 November, 2012 Dead Like Me. I initially dismissed this as a Buffy wannabe, but how very wrong I was. This is a show about a group of Grim Reapers doing thing in modern day America. It shares a lot of DNA with Six Feet Under. There is a lot of inventive death in the show and a lot of swearing. Mandy "Inigo Montoya" Patinkin plays the head reaper. Excellent show with a well thought out universe. Very funny too.
dubai_phil Posted 2 November, 2012 Share Posted 2 November, 2012 How come nobody has mentioned X Factor USA? Bearsy would have LOVED Chloe Kardasian's outfit last night.... Even Simon Cowell came out with a classic... Must have the Air Conditioning too low in here tonight...

Totally agree, the greatest cop show, bar none. Dennis Franz's Andy Sipowicz is the bset Cop ever seen on TV.
Jonnyboy Posted 3 November, 2012 Share Posted 3 November, 2012 I watched a bit of NYPD. I remember welling up a little in the episode where Jimmy Smits character leaves this mortal coil.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 (edited) I'll thank his Lordship for the 'NYPD Blue' link - although I've never forgotten it, it still brings it all back. Anyone who followed this series from beginning to end, as I did, will surely know what a complex, beautifully drawn character Andy Sipowich truly was - there's almost something Shakespearean about him. It's highly unlikely we ever reach a consensus on what the greatest US TV series was of course, but for me it just has to be NYPD Blue. If 'Blue' is the greatest, then it is because the genius behind it - Steven Bochco - made it so. It's no coincidence that Bochco also produced 'Hill Street Blues', without that groundbreaking series NYPD Blue could perhaps never have been made. Watching 'Hill Street' today and it seems a bit dated - more so than NYPD Blue ever will - but you must remember that in its day there was literally nothing else on our screen quite like it. Look at his body of work and you just have to say that Steven Bochco is the greatest TV writer/producer we've ever seen. RonManager Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 Stumbled across 'The Big Bang Theory' a few weeks back. I'm no fan of US sitcoms as I think they are mostly as dull as dishwater (Friends etc), but this has got something, a kind of surreality even, it's sharply written and has some 'laugh out loud' moments. I think that the US's best comedy lies in it's cartoons (how some of them get past the censors is beyond me), and TBBT is almost a cartoon with real actors, or as close as you'll get. I have been watching a show called Archer on Netflix. Genuinely one of the filthiest things I've ever seen.

Lord Duckhunter Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 I watched a bit of NYPD. I remember welling up a little in the episode where Jimmy Smits character leaves this mortal coil. Bobby Simone (Smits) was the best partner Sipowicz had, and he had some good ones. The added bonus of that period was the hot Kim Delaney as his chick. There were some fit officers in NYPD, but she was tops.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 4 November, 2012 Share Posted 4 November, 2012 Something that I realised pretty late on in The Wire was that I enjoyed watching every character, even if I didn't like the character. Epic show. McNulty drink driving is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I still just watch that sometimes for the LOLS. The Wire is fantastic, though for me, Sopranos is king. I've been watching Breaking Bad, I do like it, but don't think it's in the same league as some of HBO's output (how are they so good by the way?). It also just reminds me of Weeds too much, which I'm also a fan of. Nancy is simply amazing. Boardwalk Empire is worth a mention too, stunningly good show - and as per with HBO, plenty of boobies, which is never a bad thing really.

F&G is probably my favourite American sitcom. It was funny and watchable purely as a sitcom, but it also dealt with some pretty "heavy" topics very sensibly. Bit hammy at times but hey, who cares?
