England Squad.

the squad is a joke...

we will no doubt, turn to non performing, non scoring players and build them up to something they are not.

Cleverley, Sturridge, Welbeck, downing

Lambert has no chance...despite being brilliant this season

Carroll is back from injury as well and we all know how the nation loves him.

I dont mind him...at least he plays (now at west ham) and will do well for them.......but no crouch, despite always scoring..

we seems to be fixated on age...if a player is 30 now..fans seem to think we should not look at them as they will be 34 in 4 years..or something daft like that..

but the idea that sturridge gets in ahead of many is a joke..he never plays for chelsea and when he does, he is very much a 'head down' type of player who plays for himself.

dont get me started on cleverley...

as usual...roooney will be a shoe-in for a starting place.

just wait till phil jones is fit..parts of the press will go on about him being some sort of future england captain..ignoring the fact that he is not very good

Lallana outside chance but would be suprised. Rickie I can't see even if he scores 30 this season. If he was 21 maybe but his type of player just doesnt fit with the media etc. They would just focus on what he can't do rather than the fact he is probably the best striker of a ball in the league.

San Marino won't even be a contest considering they only have two full time professional football players in their entire talent pool. They'll beat Poland in the typical unconvincing performance.

But their competitive games so it'll mean no Lallana/Lambert. The replica shirts have got to be sold. . .

Glad we've dodged losing our players for another squad.

Why anyone would want our lads in the England set up is beyond me.

This is the benefit; Adkins gets to work with the majority of the squad for over a week with no games to get in the way.

Saying that we'll still lose a few: Clyne to England U21, Fox to Scotland, Yoshida to Japan, Davis to NI, Ramirez to U R Gay, Mayuka to Zambia.......quite a few, actually!

Which English forwards are actually playing and realistically in with a shout?

Defoe, Holt, Graham, Lambert, Carroll, Crouch, Rooney?

The ones who will get picked but only play as subs if they get on the pitch at all

Welbeck, Sturridge,

Gary Hooper?

Hooper will never be picked until he is playing in a competitive league.

Just as our players won't be picked for England as first choices and not as last minute call ups whilst we keep losing. Not that it matters though, thought Lallana might get his chance again though if only against San Marino.

Gutted Milner gets picked ahead of Lallana, there has to be some sort of terrible favour Milner does to Roy every week for that place....

Don't see what Welbeck or Carroll have done so far this season or last that justifies a place in the squad either.

Hopefully we draw to San Marino and the FA review the selection process as this is a big joke

I thought Carroll looked handy when he came on for West Ham the other day, he's the type of player who's presence will always cause panic in defences.

So this is the initial squad, which will then be changed by tactical withdrawals by Messrs Ferguson and Wenger, then we will get the 2nd round picks of players who will not play but will **** of their clubs such as Saints. International football is a complete yawn and should be limited to a month each year after the proper football season has completed.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing time and time again, but expecting the same result. Thats how I feel about England and this squad offers me nothing to change my mind.

Some would say that repeatedly getting to major championship tournaments and being ranked 5th in the world would suggest we're not doing terribly. We're simply not as good as the top sides, yet our media keeps telling us we are and should be disappointed with the team. In reality we're doing about as well as expected for a team of our quality.

He's not fit yet is my main complaint, I doubt he's anywhere ready for 90mins on saturday and probably won't be ready for 90 mins against us...

so he has an easy 90 minute run out against San Marino and 30 against Poland, nothing like playing to get your fitness up. Woy is doing West Ham a favour, Carroll will probably fit enough get a hatrick against our lamentable CB pairing or he'll knock the ball down for Vaz Te.

We should organise a friendly cos we're always crap after I Breaks.Something of the standard of San Marino, Pompey perhaps.,

But that's not the point of the San Marino game really, should be trying out other centre forwards instead of plebbing about with half fit "big names"

Roy isn't running a day care centre for unfit premier league players, he's managing a national team who need to bang in at least 8 to get the goal difference up and actually try and qualify.... Best thing they can do is try out a few inform strikers instead of players that are still finding form...

God I hate the England team

I must admit i didn' t think Roy was going to be as gutless as he has been.It just needs a brave man to come along and **** all the dross and yes men out the door and introduce young energetic players like Tom Ince etc something that will get the fans excited again, its all so predictable and makes you wonder as a player do you really want to be part of at the moment

Exactly. Nothing but a negative uninspiring side show for a lot of players at the moment.

I'm going to this game, bit of an anti-climax now.

I'll probably get hammered for this but you do realise its about building a team to compete in tournements? However good lambert might be the reality is he's going to be 32 at the next tournament and this will probably be the only one he has any chance of playing in. International football isn't just about throwing the most in form 11 players in the country on a pitch and hoping they perform, then doing the same 3 months later, right the way through to a tournemment final. As much as I rate Rickie I wouldn't pick him either.

I've been very impressed with JonJo Shelvey when I've seen him this season. Got to have a good chance of a call up before too long.

Not a chance, when you`ve got Jordan Henderson with his ability waiting in the wings just about sums it up.

It's a fair point, but there's also an argument to make that while we should of course prepare for World Cup 2014, we also should look at matches on a game by game, one off basis. So there should be a balance between creating a core squad of players for 2 years time and bringing in form players on a game by game basis who can provide a fresh impetus.

Given the dearth of quality up front for England, I'm surprised crouch has been completely left aside. I guess its because he snubbed being a reserve; for that I'd actually tell him to do one and he'd never play for me again, but Roy seems a bit more forgiving, as he let Carrick back into the fold. Grant Holt isn't exactly in form this season so his bleating about not being called up is a bit unjustified; that said I think he has a point when he highlights the non-inclusion of Danny Graham and to a lesser extent Nathan Dyer. We dont have an embarrassment of riches up front for England as it is, and we're now relying on Rooney and Defoe plus Andy "played less than 90 minutes of league football all season" and Danny "4th choice striker for my club" Welbeck. Given the paucity of that attack, I think there's a case to be made to include Graham and even Rickie on a one-game basis.

Roy is a little full on contradiction; on one hand he mentiones not calling up Crouch as he is similar to Carroll and they wouldn't play together. But he's also called up 3 left backs (Cole, Baines, Gibbs); strange.

Fair point but it's also about qualifying.

listening to talksport in the car just now...and fair play..a journo was on there saying it is about time his colleagues got real about England..we are not the 5th best side in the world in reality....it is a bit of a false position due to the euros......he said we are building our players up as "the best in the world" again when talking about joe hart....how can someone be the best in the world after one game..? (last night)....seemingly forgetting the Real Madrid game where he was at fault for 2 of the goals.....

why cant we just say joe hart is one of the better keepers in europe rather than the default position of the "best in the world"

also, it will take one decent game for England from Rooney before he is (again) called "one of the best in the world"

Hodgson has been a disaster for England. He could have gone to Ukraine with a vision for the future, based on the previous disaster that was SA 2010, screw the results, and built a competitive team from there. But no, he played it conservative and uninspiring and now we are stuck with the same faces for at least another 3 years, and Englands renaissance has been put back a generation.

And I will NEVER forgive him siding with the racist c**t (who has now thrown his support back in his face in a pathetic cowardly Shearer-like attempt to blackmail the FA with his retirement).

Holt is spot-on; how Carroll can slink back in based on a sub appearance past Rickie is quite unbelievable.

No, he really hasn't

Of course he played it conservative. He would rightly have been utterly rinsed by choosing a new batch of players he'd barely even seen and had playing for him. who are the amazing young players he's left out?

Carroll was always going to get a call-up; it was either him or Crouch. I personally wouldn't ever pick Crouch for turning his back on England during the summer, so I've got no bother with that. Though I wouldn't have minded seeing one extra striker called to the 4 there now, and RL would be a prime candidate.
