sotonian Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 A lot of critisisim of arsenal and everton home support, but ours is not great, I've been in the northam since St Mary's opened but this season I've moved to itchen centre, I've now realised compared to the away fans the northam really isn't very loud, i thought it was good when i was there, are northerners just louder as people? The other thing I didn't realise was they actually do sing in the chapel end!!

Could it be because when you are in the Itchen centre, the away fans are adjacent to you and therefore closer to you than our fans in the Northam? Just a thought.
Nexstar Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 Our home support is in no way comparable to Arsenal or Everton.
anothersaintinsouthsea Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 The accoustics at SMS are really pretty bad, you can only really hear singing in nearby areas. In ye olden days I sat in block 38 for a match against Man U and thought their support was really quiet but when watched back on MOTD you could hear them loud and clear (for example).
Saint Garrett Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 I don't think our home support is amazing, but it's not that bad either. Atleast our fans try and have a go the majority of the games. After going to both Everton and Arsenal, I can safely say we're considerably better than them.
Appy Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 Our home support is pretty good compared to most of the away games i've been to.
pingwing Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 There's no more chapel chapel give us a song Anyway home support isn't too bad, fair bit of singing and a decent amount of shouting at the away fans and some god awful songs form them. Just not as loud as expected considering we've been close to full most home games this season, especially as in the champ and l1 20k or so could make a lot of noise.

kpturner Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 (edited) Oh good - another thread about the quality of our support.......waits for comments about OWTS being sung far too fast/slow, and people not singing at all etc etc etc Edited 2 October, 2012 by kpturner
JPTCount Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 on tv we have one if the loudest grounds, emirates and goodison were silent at times.
kpturner Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 (edited) on tv we have one if the loudest grounds, emirates and goodison were silent at times. This is proper support - otherwise just forget it: Edited 2 October, 2012 by kpturner
Pugwash Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 Two things: Firstly, the acoustics of modern 'all-round' stadia is p!ss-poor. That's why Krap Nottarf seems to be loud - they have 50% of their support in a stand shaped liked a speaker horn and boxed in at the sides. Secondly, there is less to play for in the Prem. No promotions, virtually no chance of European football for 14 of the 20 clubs, everyone's nervous of being relegated, so crowds are quieter.
Dan Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 Got a mate is a Utd fan who was in the away end last month that said compared to most premiership grounds we were quite good. I dont think its brilliant, but its certainly no where near as bad as many others.
70's Mike Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 funny how this type of thread keeps poping up wish someone would define what good Home support is and then tell me where it happens
sotonian Posted 2 October, 2012 Author Posted 2 October, 2012 The point I was trying to make but probably explained badly is that when I was in the northam it seemed loud, but now I'm at the other end of the ground I realise we are not actually that loud, esp compared to the villa and man u fans
Junction 9 Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 The point I was trying to make but probably explained badly is that when I was in the northam it seemed loud, but now I'm at the other end of the ground I realise we are not actually that loud, esp compared to the villa and man u fans I have done exactly the same. The one place in the ground where you can't really hear the away support is the home section of the Northam, we are at 90 degrees to them so no surprise. You get differing views on St Marys atmosphere depending on where you sit.
Miltonroader07 Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 I am a bit of a fan of supporters being at opposite ends of the ground
The Majestic Channon Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 I am a bit of a fan of supporters being at opposite ends of the ground Unless your'e a bournemouth fan you've got no worries then.
Dr Who? Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 Unless your'e a bournemouth fan you've got no worries then. Or Oxford!
smackalec Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 I went to villa park and sat in the holte on Sunday. Was hoping it was going to be a fairly good atmosphere as it was a derby game. But it was abysmal. They just didn't get going. The villa supporter I went with was so embarrassed. He comes to st marys fairly regularly and always says how good the home fans are. Now I've written that I don't really know what my point was.
leithsaint Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 I did think that it was quite amusing on sunday, sky cut to a shot of the holte end, commentator says something like 'fans in the holte end, proud of being like a twelth man for Villa', yet all the fans were sat back, all quiet, someone was expecting their nails etc......and this was at 1-0 down.
dickyhale Posted 2 October, 2012 Posted 2 October, 2012 Having been to all 3 away league games this season I can safely say that our home support is way, way, way better than anything I witnessed thus far. Same at Everton walked through a grave yard into a grave yard......Man City was not that clever "noisy neighbours my arse" Arsenal total shocking LOL
whelk Posted 3 October, 2012 Posted 3 October, 2012 we're southern and mainly middle class. Singing is uncouth. All away fans are better as by definition are more dedicated to club. And often ****ed of course.
stinhk Posted 3 October, 2012 Posted 3 October, 2012 I wonder if/how crowd demographics differ between L1 and PL football crowds?

Did the nails turn up in the end?
