Were you expecting more than a 3-1?

We'd all said a 3-1 defeat on the train up.

Thought we gifted them possession to easily, were so narrow that we couldn't cover the flanks which meant we were simply over run and far too soft in the centre.

That said, JR effort goes in and who knows. Got to take chances when on top.

How did Ramirez look today? From the stream (apart from the goal) he looked a bit loose in possession and gifted it back too easily.

Clearly a quality player but I would have had him on the left with an extra bit of bite in the CM role as they cut through there far too easily at times.

What I was most surprised by today was the total lack of atmosphere. Goodison never used to be quiet. This Premier League lark is grossly over rated, has changed immensely in the years we've been out of it and I'd be quite happy not to be in it.

I was surprised at the ease they sliced through the middle at times, and were running straight out our CB's. Now, we cold buy the best CB's in the world - but if you give them no protection, then they're going to be pulled all over the shop.

You guys came across well though, heard lots of saints chants - very little from EFC though as you said.

It's not just Everton, since we've been away football has been sanitized on and off of the field,no tackling to get you all riled up,no name calling,no unpleasant chanting, far too many females not enough characters in the game and clean toilets.

Bring back the bad old days for me.

Firstly I'm really quite drunk,

Secondly I thin we done alright, first 25 mins we were excellent properly went at them, they couldn't deal with us. Second 20 mins of the first half they properly turned it round, improved in the tackle and were very impressive on their left, made us look average. Thought Lallana was our best player. Lambert played well tried hard but little success. Thought we were playing with a 'false 9' in the first half, Jrod right Ramirez central and lambert left. However we gave it a good go and fair play for foxy to stand in amongst the saints boys. Especially after the abuse he's got over the last few weeks. Our fans were superb and proud to call myself a saints tonight. I've had abuse from west ham mates all day about us losing again, blah blah blah, I couldn't give a ****, I'd rather be Southampton and support us than a joke club like whu,

How was Lallana our best player? He achieved nothing. Lambert laid in two terrific passes second half.

What do you have against lallana?

Serious question.

I think he's a good player but not as good as people make out. I feel his final ball is nowhere good enough. I think he's a prem player but think people overestimate how good he is. The games about end product and don't see that from him enough. His loyalty has been great and he works hard but needs to improve and today I didn't see enough end product.

Highlights:

3-1 and you still don't sing

We've got more teeth than you

The irony of Everton fans singing "you've only got one song", which was about the only thing I recall them singing

The first five minutes

Rest of the match was fairly crap. View from lower stand was ****e too.

As for players:

Thought Rickie was isolated on the left, he should be in the box.

Rod was dire.

Gaston gave it away too much.

Davis was superb, lot of hard graft and kept things ticking. The only player capable of consistently passing to his own team.

Defence ****e, as usual.

Keeper should have done better for the 2nd and 3rd goals.

My 2 pence worth.

Full backs an issue, Clyne on the left makes lallana quiet and stops him roaming at tight back. Jrod either needs to work back better or score his one on one chance. Yoshida looked strong against a very physical Fellani and calm in position but needs a solid back four to look better

Word. I reckon the plan was to park our strikers out wide to discourage their full backs from bombing forward. Would have worked better if they was one of them teams that like to play out from the back through the full backs cos they would have been all confused bout who to pass to. As it was they just hit Fellaini early and it stuck cos he was a beast

We were decent until they equalised and despite the odd hint of promise in the second half it was really all over by half time.

Unconvinced by Gazzaniga so hope Boruc can be fit and ready to play ASAP, although to be fair the defence didn't help him at all today. Rodriguez was poor, hopefully see Mayuka get a start against Fulham.

Everton fans were amongst the worst home fans I've ever seen. The only time I heard them was when they celebrated their goals...genuinely didn't hear any chants from them!

Pretty confident Reading (although by all accounts they were decent today) and Norwich are worse than us...just need to find 1 more!

Long day... Seems scoring early was actually a bad tactic, as it woke them up and they could have easily got 5 in first half. 2nd half was a bit better but to be honest seemed like everton were in cruise control. ho hum. lee barnard moment was funny though, as well as the man with not many teeth. finally evertons fans were truly awful, and goodison aint much better, not used to having a pole right in front of me.

We really need to rethink how we play away from home. We got player selection wrong today (not sure j rod was the right pick)and badly missed schneiderlin sitting in front of the back 4 in the first half. (Would have played yoshida on midfield and brought hooiveld back in Morgans absence). He tidies an awful lot up and gets us playing the passing game we are pretty effective at. We looked very unbalanced and once osman and pienaar realised they had the freedom of midfield and the flanks we were in trouble.

Today proved it doesn't matter who plays at full back - if you give them no protection away from home, allow the opposition to double up on them, then your asking for trouble. Neither lallana or J rod offered cover first half. We look decent going forward but far too fragile defensively still. We seem to be set up to stop teams playing through the middle of us, but both arsenal and now Everton have really exploited the space out wide. Don't know the answer though without detracting from what's good about us going forward.

Yoshida had a good game throughout I thought, SD and JWP were better second half positionally. Even though he was a little more wasteful in possession today, Ramirez still looked a class above at times. If he pulls it back to 3-2 then they would have panicked having taken their foot off the pedal. Lambert had little service after the opening 20 minutes, and lallana's influence wained after that too.

I still think we will be alright - Everton are a good team this year, especially at home. I think they have won 8/9 ar home now including last season. We need to find a way of playing away that makes us tighter at the back, and enables Ramirez, lallana and lambert to do their thing. We haven't got that balance anywhere near right yet. Didn't expect anything from today so more frustrated then down tonight to see us waste a lead again.

We have lost 3-1 to the 2nd team in the league. What we must do next week is as Poulter says "kill" Fulham!

Agreed

Fulham are in the top 7 too we will have played all the top team bar Chelsea and west Brom (if you can call them a top team despite their lofty position)

The games against the Norwichs, QPR's, Readings, Stokes etc will define our season everyone seems to have forgotten what a relegation dogfight is really like!

We had about 20 of them in the 27 years we were up last time and one every year between 1967 and 1974 the time before. We lost many games against the top teams by big margins not least of which were the 7-0 drubbing to Leeds and 8-0 to Everton. Despite those losses we still stayed up! We all need to Keep the faith!

This certainly isn't the Championship or League 1.

We missed Morgan badly. He brings the composure and organisation that was lacking for at least two of the goals. Not that Ward-Prowse had a bad game.

With Cork out as well, we need a stronger holding midfielder. Could it be Yoshida with Jos partnering Jose?

Great day out. I'm still not despondent. Everton are a good team and, apart from 15 mins we gave them a game.

Btw, was told Fox was in the crowd with his family. Saw he wasn't even on the bench. Injured or now out of favour?

Agree with Shropie we missed Morgan terribly hope he is fit for next Sunday. Didn't really enjoy the day at all Goodison was and always will be one of the worst grounds the views are bad unless you are in the upper stand. The pub we normally used was now a Chinese restaurant so opted for the Abbey which must win the prize for the worst designed pub ever. To add to all this the stewards down the front were bad and the worst home crowd I have seen for a long time. We were in the game for short periods and Jay Rod, Ramirez and Lambert all missed good chances. Still not despondent though think there are 3 times worse than us in this league.

For future reference, go to the Ship & Mitre. Good cheap ale, very friendly.

To anyone who went - would I be right in assuming Jay Rod was played out wide again rather than as a two up front with Rickie ?

In the first half at times J-Rod, Rickie and Ramirez were pushed up as a front 3 and it looked we were playing with 3 strikers. This certainly caused Everton problems but as we never seemed the win the second ball we were always caught out in midfield when we tried to play it up to them and then quickly lost it, with those 3 still upfield.

Going forward we looked good but as soon as we lost the ball boy were we in trouble. From under the stand I coudn't really see Richardson's side but could see down our left flank and for large parts of the first half Clyne was facing 2 on 1. Not sure where the midfield were but by the time they had realised the danger Everton were already exploiting the space. I must admit I thought isn't that exactly what Fox has been facing when he's played.

For me that was the crux of the issue; in the first half we attacked as a team but didn't defend as a team, they over-powered us in mid-field and at the back.

We looked better in the 2H but then again Everton had a 3-1 lead and had just about wrapped the game up.

Everton fans were silent except for their goal celebrations. Those fans i spoke to said it was quiet today but didn't offer up any explanation. However they were very friendly and helpful.

After a excellent start we got taught a lesson we missed Morgan in midfield wooly headed fella ran the show & they had pace wide left & wide right with there full backs pushing on at warp speed they had us 2 v 1 countless times the last 35 mins of the 1st half we hardly had a kick with our midfield all over the place chasing shadows.

Jay Rod should have put us 2 up poor finish our keeper should have done better with 2 goals Fonte is nowhere near good enough Yoshida is not going to win enough headers & we gave no support to our full backs we can have no complaints they were miles better than us.

I have to ask the question of why we didnt address our defence before this season started we are so open & conceed so many chances that against quality opposition we are always going to need 3 or 4 goals to win a game I dont know if we have the right players or the right style to become a side that is difficult to beat but we have got to tighten up all over the pitch
