Saint 76er Posted 29 September, 2012 Share Posted 29 September, 2012 Not a happy thought and things would begin to look a bit precarious, losing all home and away apart from Villa. NC did not look a happy man during the match (understandable) and is not noted for his patience with underperforming staff. Lose to Fulham and I think he will want to do something. He may of course restrain himself, or he could look for someone to sack. He may instead perhaps bring in some coaching assistance, or he may have a free agent defender or two on the radar and may be induced to pick up the phone. He may indeed have to bear some responsibility for not bringing in PL experienced defenders in the summer. Can't help thinking that NC will have someone in mind as a managerial back up plan, but don't know if or when he may decide to activate such a plan B. I just think a loss to Fulham and things would start to look decidedly ugly. This board would succumb to meltdown and NC may be tempted to follow suit. S-Clarke Posted 29 September, 2012 Share Posted 29 September, 2012 Will we get threads like this after every defeat this year (there will be many more, as well). Football is a real fickle world, but I don't think NC is even that fickle.
the stain Posted 29 September, 2012 Share Posted 29 September, 2012 Adkins was safe after the villa game, but is at risk again? This is ridiculous. There were people on the match thread saying Adkins is out of his depth and needs to go. One very regular poster suggested Adkins didn't know what he was doing but by the end of the match had said the result was as expected and he wasn't too bothered. What is wrong with some of you? The amount of knee jerk reactions is incredible. And starting new threads after each defeat about Adkins being sacked only adds credence to these daft rumours. So please stop it. Saint 76er Posted 29 September, 2012 Author Share Posted 29 September, 2012 Will we get threads like this after every defeat this year (there will be many more, as well). Football is a real fickle world, but I don't think NC is even that fickle. Yes, I tend to agree with you SC, and NC does appear to be giving Nige a decent go at it. However, by his look at the match it's not hard to guess at the thoughts going through his mind. No, we don't need such a thread after every game and neither do I start them. However, I do think the Fulham game may be something of a watershed in our season and I can see assessments being made should we lose it, because that would mean losing every away game and every home game, bar one. Although still relatively early, I'm sure alarm bells would start ringing as the form would then simply have to improve and pdq. The OP does suggest different ways this might be achieved and I have no doubt fans on this forum will want to discuss it. Bottom line is that losing to Everton is probably acceptable, but I suspect that losing at home to Fulham may not be. Obviously, the answer is to beat the Cottagers and problem is solved (for the time being!).

Turkish Posted 29 September, 2012 Share Posted 29 September, 2012 Cortese has to take some responsibility. It was an odd decision to drop Puncheon who has been playing well and we were exposed on flanks yet again. Far too lightweight in midfield too. Cortese got his tactics and selection wrong today I'm afraid.

Lighthouse Posted 29 September, 2012 Share Posted 29 September, 2012 If we lose to Fulham it will be our second disappointing results of the season after Wigan. The rest, even shipping 6 at Arsenal could all be pretty much expected. I've just looked at our fixtures for the next 3 months. With the exception of Chelsea away in December they are ALL easier than 4 of the 6 games we've just played. Let's judge Adkins on the back of these 3 months of winnable fixtures and make a decision at Christmas, rather than throwing a panic because we haven't won at Goodison. Fulham, Spuds, Norwich, Geordies, Swansea, Sunderland and Reading all at home before Christmas. They are the games that will show if we're good enough to stay up, not the start of death we've just had. There are also some winnable trips to Wham, WBA, Stoke and possibly Fulham coming up too. Patience.

Thedelldays Posted 29 September, 2012 Share Posted 29 September, 2012 Sooner or later people will just have to accept there's a lot of good sides who can beat you. Isn't necessarily some awful performance, just lots of quality opposition. it seems like everyone predicing/expecting 15th-20th didn't realise that such positions involve losing a hell of a lot of games! don't forget, this place did a good job of convincing itself that the prem is average and we will finish above stoke

SNSUN Posted 29 September, 2012 Share Posted 29 September, 2012 I'm upbeat about our chances of staying in this division. Yes our defence sucks big ones, but I'd say our attacking outlets are better than many in this league. I agree with people saying we need to keep afloat until January, when we can sort the defence out, and I think we will. I've not seen every game, but the signs are we're a good attacking outlet now. Hopefully we can beat Fulham and 6 points from 7 games won't seem all that bad. Will beat Fulham? I think we will.

alpine_saint Posted 29 September, 2012 Share Posted 29 September, 2012 We spent 30m on players over the summer, but still our squad is uncompetitive. We cannot spend any money until January (even if NC is so inclined), which is rapidly looking like it will be too late. NC will have to do something well before then. You dont spend 30m to yo-yo. There will have to be some sort of change in the managing/coaching set-up. That does not necessarily mean firing anyone, but something will need to change nevertheless. Time is ticking for Adkins But in all honesty I would love to have seen a better return of course, but not every team can do a Norwich/Swansea! I would have had us on 3 more points with a home win against Wigan, but apart from that, we did better against Man U, Aston Villa and Man City than expected. Worse against Arsenal, and Wigan. Today I was expected a 1-3. Next week I expect a win, and at home is where we need to be winning. Give it a bit longer before judging as you really need to keep up with a point per game to keep yourself in the running to stay up. 2 wins and we will be on 9 points from 8 games.
