Saints v Fulham Build Up

Cheese on Toast

In other words then he was not in control. Agood ref would have clamped down on this early on. Still it really isn't too important, a light hearted remark taken out of context by the official rep of the referees union.

he never lost control..he was clamping down on it..hence why there were a lot of bookings and a sending off....the bookings happened all through the game..not in the last 20 mins after letting people get out of control

Put a bit of bite into midfield. I've always advocated round pegs in round holes. I'm happy with the goalkeeper. I've never taken much notice of Boruc but his 300 games for Celtic would probably include three quarters as a spectator due to the lack of real competition in Scotland. It is reported that he was good for Fiorentina and he would have had plenty to do there. If we drop Gazzaniga then Boruc has to be much better otherwise it is a wasted exercise and investing Premier experience in an already good young goalkeeper is IMO if he isn't, the better option. I think I prefer Fox, if fully fit in at left back with Fonte and Hooiveld at centreback. That gives us a settled back four. Yoshida was a midfielder at Grampus Nagoya and successfully converted to centreback. I would like to see him with Davis in CM with Lallana and Puncheon L/RM, Ramirez in front of the midfield and Lambert up front. Yoshida is strong and a good passer, he would give us the cover in front of the centrebacks and the full backs.

I don't really care about systems or numbers as all they do if they don't suit the team is hamstring it. The way we played against Villa looked much more natural for the team, so I would like us to forget about trying to adapt the players to a numbers game and get them playing comfortably.

I'd happily see Yoshida play Centre-Mid, think he could definitely do the job there. The 50 yard run he made with the ball in the first half at Everton showed real quality. Would agree with the rest of your line-up. Can see Hangeland going up against Lambert and doing a decent job on him potentially. Saw on a Fulham forum there is a chance Berbatov might be back.

can one of the usual suspects go on the ticket website and work out how many tickets are still left for this one?

Looks like we're getting nowhere near a sellout for this one; still over 2,800 seats available for home fans. No tickets are available in block 43 but I've got no idea how many fans Fulham will bring; if they're a distance short of the max 3,200 allocation then I think this will comfortably be the lowest gate of the season.

I wonder if the bad run of results will start to effect crowd numbers?

How do you mean "start to affect"? Crowds have hardly been overwhelming already, we were far from a sell out for Man United, perhaps the most popular draw in football.

Besides, we won our last home game 4-1 which is surely a basis for optimism?

Well I never expected sellouts this season anyway. I figured we might have higher numbers at the start of the season on the back of the last couple of seasons but figured that once the reality of the PL kicked in we would see a drop in attendences. Just wondering if the reality is starting to kick in if this will be a lowest home gate in the PL so far. One win in six is unlikely to attract the casuals IMO.

Fulham sold their initial allocation of 1800 and were sent more tickets to bring it up to 2500, they won't bring more than that, but still not bad for them and boosts the attendance a bit. block 43 will remain empty i'd imagine.

i assume your 2800 figure does not include all the unsold corporate tickets as well? plus block 43 we'd be looking at about 27,500 i'd imagine.

Really? I genuinely expected the opposite, that most games would sell out or get very close.

I'm not sure if reality kicking in is that much of a factor, if I'm honest. Optimism was sky high, especially so even after the Man City defeat, and yet apart from the Man United game we've seen seats available throughout the ground. Villa in the PL is typically a big draw (the last 3 PL games against them were around the 32K mark) yet we came up 1,000 or so short of that. I think it's possibly due to a number of factors:

- prices are high compared to the past 3 years, and the financial situation is obviously what it is.

- there's a certain ambivalence to the Premier League.

- all games are shown/streamed live so there is the opportunity to watch on tv/internet.

- we're no longer expected to win games so mayeb some people are put off by that.

- corporate sales have been woeful, and if they continue at the same rate we won't come close to selling out any league games this season.

So its a combination of a number of factors, I'd have thought. Although i confess I thought the PL novelty factor would actually kick in at least for the first 3 or 4 games, but it appears not.

That is decent, I didn't know if they'd bring that many.

And no, the corporate figures are not included in that, those figures are unavailable (though given what we've seen so far this season in corporate it's more than likely the trend of empty seats will continue). I'd say your 27,500 is fairly accurate, we may get towards 28,500.

Gazza

Clyne - Fonte - Yoshida - Fox

Punch - Ramirez - Davis - Lallana

Lambert - Mayuka

Bench: KD, Schneiderlin, JWP, Guly, Hooiveld, Chaplow, and one more I don't care who. Probably Jay-Rod, but I'm tired of him not doing much so Frazer or Ben Reeves would work, too.

I think we need to see two guys up top and emphasize the wings. If Tadanari was fit I'd play him instead of Mayuka, moving him to the bench and taking out one of the reserves.

If we play two central midfielders and one of them is Ramirez, we will get ripped apart. If we play two up top (and not Ramirez off Lambert) then I think Ramirez would have to be in as a winger with two central midfielders who were happier to sit a little deeper (As we played last year). Probably Davis and JWP, based on availability of MS and Cork.

I actually think Fox may do alright if he plays. Would be up against Duff I think, who despite being a decent player, was never known for his pace. It's when he is up against a very quick player that his positioning issues become highlighted and he looks terrible, IMO.

Would have

-----------------Boruc

Clyne --- Fonte --- Yoshi ---Fox

------------Davis----JWP----------

Guly---------Ramirez-----Lallana

---------------Lambert-------------

Subs: Gazza, Frazer, Jos, Chaplow, Puncheon, Mayuka, J-Rod.

I'd have Mayuka instead of Guly. And obviously Morgan if back from injury, which I'm guessing he won't be.

Boruc/Gazza

Clyne, Jos, Fonte, ? Really difficult to decide whether Clyne should play on the left and Frazer on the right, or do we play a proper left back - Fox/Shaw

Davis, Yoshida,

Puncheon, Ramirez, Lallana,

Lambert

If Morgan is fit, put Yoshi at the back with Fonte.

I'd like to see Boruc start, along with Mayuka getting his first start instead of Puncheon.

I imagine the defence will be the same as it was against Everton with Clyne left back. Midfield 3 of JWP. Davis and Ramirez unless Morgan is back.

I'd like to see Mayuka get a run-out, but haven't seen or heard to suggest anything that he can fit back in and cover defensive duties. I'd have Puncheon or Guly personally. Pretty sure Boruc will start.

Thing is Puncheon has been pretty rubbish at tracking back anyway so i doubt that Mayuka can be any worse.

He's younger and keen to play, plus I suspect has a little less ego than Puncheon so I reckon he would be disciplined in the role if Adkins tells him to be.

What ego is this Puncheon has

He he been very good this season.

Ego might have been the wrong word, but he has had his sulks, I more meant that I think Mayuka will be happy to do the defensive stuff as he;s desperate to get game time.

Going forward yes, tracking back no, Lallana has been bad at this as well but Puncheon has been worse.

Wouldn't say he's been 'very good' He was good against Villa and Man Utd, and ok in the Man City game. The rest he's been a liability as if he doesn't want to play it's like playing with 10. He's been better than he has been over the last few years, but still going to take a lot more good performances to win the fans over.

You know Adrian once upon a time there was the acronym EOE on every invoice and most other commercial documents.

This should now be added to every tongue in cheek team suggestion, it means errors and omissions excepted.

Shilton

Dodd Killer Richards Bridge

Davis - Le Tissier - Morgan

Lalanna - Bale

Shearer

Comments -

All players assumed to be in there prime, EOE!

Only just realised its on sky on Sunday.

I knew it was on Sky, but stupidly assumed it was a 1600 KO.

Managed to get myself half of my afternoon shift off at work only to find out the next day that it is a bloody poxy 1330 KO - I should manage to arrive at the Bar 10 mins after the game has finished . feck feck feck it.

LAWRO'S PREDICTION

This should be a very open game, and I fancy Southampton's chances.

I know Fulham won their last away game, at Wigan, but the Latics created plenty of scoring opportunities in that match and, as a Saints player, you would be going into a home game against the Cottagers thinking that we are going to do the same and we can win.

I'm not sure Southampton felt that confident about taking the three points even when they went ahead against Everton last week but this weekend will be a different story, especially if Fulham have one of their off-days on the road.

Southampton have conceded an average of three goals a game in the league this season and I am sure their manager Nigel Adkins will have been working like mad on their defending but it is important they do not lose any of their attacking threat at the same time.

It is all about getting the balance right and I am with Adkins when he says he will keep on attacking. As a newly promoted team he has not got the strongest of squads but he has some useful attacking players like Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert so he should play to his strengths.

Prediction: 2-0

Supposedly Petric is out as well. We should win this and if there is an opportunity to keep a first clean sheet then this is it.

Fulham striker Mladen Petric is a doubt for the Barclays Premier League clash at Southampton with a calf problem.

The Croatia international suffered the injury in training today and his absence would be another blow for the Cottagers, whose manager Martin Jol gives Dimitar Berbatov (hip/upper thigh) only a 10 percent chance of figuring on Sunday.

Simon Davies (hip) and Mahamadou Diarra (knee) are also sidelined, but Kieran Richardson returns. Ashkan Dejagah, Philippe Senderos, Pajtim Kasami and Kerim Frei could also be involved if they come through Friday's development team match.

Provisional squad: Schwarzer, Stockdale, Riether, Kelly, Hangeland, Hughes, Senderos, Baird, Smith, Riise, Briggs, Sidwell, Duff, Richardson, Kacaniklic, Kasami, Karagounis, Frei, Dejagah, Ruiz, Petric, Rodallega, Trotta.
