Just back from the game

Probably the easiest 2 -0 win ever seen.

Wednesday were horrific and just as well we never signed Antonio.

Chaplow, JWP and Cork bossed midfield.

Rodriguez was quality.

Gazza flapped at a couple but made a couple of good saves.

De Ridder for all his pace and skill delivered absolutely nothing all night so frustrating

he gets in great positions then whacks it at defenders rather than get his head up and pick someone out.

Seaborne was ok but poor distribution and a couple of silly fouls.

Yoshida is class.

The ticket office cant run a raffle!!!

Just back

Bit disappointing really as although the win was comfortable enough there was little to get excited about. We played the ball around nicely but lacked that final incisive ball.

What did I learn and what were the pluses and minuses.

Rodriguez scored a nice opening goal a little similar to Lambert’s goal v Villa. He had already had a one on one but his shot was well saved and it was good to see him get his first competitive goal. He worked hard, led the line intelligently and scored the second, a pen which their keeper nearly saved but the ball trickled over the line much to Rodriguez’s relief.

De Ridder – perfect cameo tonight from him. Bags of pace, lots of skill but absolutely no end product (apart from winning the pen which was a little fortunate). Someone shouted behind me “why don’t you look where you are running”? and that summed his play up. He promises so much but plays with his head down, he hits crosses hopefully and really does not seem to know where he or the ball is going to end up. At the very most an impact player from the bench.

Gazza – worryingly dropped two crosses but apart from that made one or two good saves, one with the very last shot of the game. Pretty sure Davis would have made the saves too but importantly there were one or two Gazza held while I am tempted to think Kelvin may have parried. His distribution was also good.

Richardson is a better footballer than Fox but his crossing was shocking as usual. Within the first half hour he overhit no fewer than four crosses and each time he had time to deliver.

Seaborne played left back and did ok even showing some skill once or twice with some deft touches but I full-back is not his position and distribution was average.

Hooiveld and Yoshida did well , the Japanese has bags of confidence and mobility – like the look of him.

Cork was very busy but worryingly went down with 10 mins to go after a heavy tackle and did not move. It looked like a reoccurrence of his old injury but after a couple of mins he walked off without too much discomfort (to be replaced by someone I have not heard of, a big midfielder called Andy Robinson – anyone know anything?).

Chaplow was Chaplow, good at times but gave the ball away and once very well-placed had a shot which went over by 20 yards – a poor effort.

Do Prado – good and bad. Worked hard, ran around, hit the post with a header but then gives the ball away in a slack fashion.

Ward-Prowse as busy as ever but somehow did not catch the eye as much as he does when surrounded by better players.

That’s about it – job well done, not sure how many of Wednesday’s team are considered first teamers but we beat them fairly easily and got no bookings. Cork’s injury aside NA will be fairly pleased I imagine.

This can't be true. He is amazing, fast, strong and much better than Puncheon.

Agree about Richardson, string and powerful, a better defender than Fox but he couldn't cross a road. So frustrating. I think tonight showed we have players with good passing ability but no end product in the squad. A shame but lots of them really aren't PL standard. Reeves impressed when he came on and Cork looked calm and mature in possession, shame he got injured.

@jackcork1: Good game tonight, Thought everyone played well and put a good shift in, be good to see who we get in the next round now!

@jackcork1: Just frustrating to have to go off again, going for a scan on my knee tomorrow, don't think it's too bad. Just annoying on first game back.

Thought Rodriguez looked isolated at times, with poorservice to him for much of the game, we didn't boss the midfield and I couldn'twork out where Guly was meant to be playing. To be fair Wednesday lookedaverage at best, and that it wouldn't take much to beat them (and it didn't).

Seabourne looked up for it, constantly making himselfavailable, and doing runs beyond De Ridder a few times to help open the defenceup.

In the programme Kelvin gave his assurance that his'commitment to this club remains as strong as ever and whether I'm in the teamor on the bench, I will be available for selection and eager to play my partfor as long as needed. My duty as Club Captain is to help the club in any waypossible and my determination to fulfill the role continues even though thereis strong competition for places in the team.' Adkins talked a bit about Gazza in his column and how 'fantastic' Kelvin has been on pitch and in the dressing room and then said 'I hold Kelvin in the highest esteem for what he has done for Southampton'.

Brilliant quote from Kelvin Davis that. Exactly what you want from your club captain, class.

I thought SDR had his best game in a saints shirt most of our most dangerous play went through him...having said that his final product is still shocking can't see him getting ant time in the PL games.

Never felt like saints got out of second gear in fairness it never felt like they needed to Wednesday were dire certainaly didn't look even a decent championship side.

Cork MOM for me looked good controled the midfield shame he went off injuried at the end

J-rod scored a great first goal and a poor peno ...if he is Lamberts replacement he has got a hell of a lot of work to do to come up to Rickies level IMO

Gazza I'm not sure about fumbled a couple of saves, got tangaled up with his own defence a couple of times (could be down to having a Spanish speaking keeper and a Japanese defender I suppose)and his kicking wasn't as good as saturday but he made a couple of good saves.

All our new youth players seem to be blonde, spiky haired midgets :)

Thought de ridder tried hard but like ppl have said rarely had an end product and his decision making lets him down. Thought j rod, cork and guly were superb. As much as I don't rate seaborne as a footballer, good for him that he's back playing, however if he gets close to the 1st team then there are problems. Chaplow looked off the pace to me, and JWP had another good busy game but didn't stand out like he has previously.

honestly i thought tonight was proof that sdr offers nothing. he just ran head down at people and bundled the ball through the woeful defending. he never seems to ever really be in control.

As we agreed walking back to the car tonight's game was just about worth the £15 ticket price. It was slightly surreal to watch as we were in control for the whole game.

Bit strange listening to team pre match, it was only the regular names that reassured that you were at SMS.

everyone looked very comfortable with the task NA had given them, or was it AC in the chair as he did the Solent interview. Yoshida is a very cultured intelligent player, JWP was very busy as usual, Cork played well but makes like a crab far too often and who the hell controls the force field that protects the oppo's 18yard box it is set to repell Cork he has space to run straight into and possibly score but no, strange forces make him go left or right nearly everytime!!!

SDR: what a shame he goes off like a sparkly crackly firework in a family assortment that makes everyone go oooooooh then he just fizzles out to everyone's disappointment.

nowt wrong with Gazza.

still in the next round.

Oh forgot to add, having failed to get Arsenal tickets due to not being loyal enough with my ST alone: if we get a tasty away tie that everyone comes out of the woodwork wanting to see, using the new whizz-bang ticketing system, those who bothered to turn up tonight should have first dibs on the tickets regardless of whether they have been to Citeh, Arse or the Toffees for the league games.

SDR best game for the Saints . Cork MOM hope he is ok . JWP good first half but gave the ball away a number of times in the second half by trying too many Hollywood passes. He is also too lightweight to play in a 442. Gazza good distribution and shot stopping but fumbled the ball a few times from crosses. Chaplow touch of an angry blacksmith as usual.

Cant agree with the comments about Richardson not being able to cross the ball. Watch the DVD of last season's goals and see the number of assists he had.

Like the look of Jay Rod - as a centre forward at last ! Amazing what happens when someone is played in the natural position.

Best I have seen De Ridder play for us. Now if only he would look up before crossing he might still have something to offer us.

As usual? I didn't go tonight but I thought he had a fantastic cross usually. I've lost count of the amount of crosses Richardson put in last season that ended in a goal!

I agree, Richardson normally puts in a great cross - one of the top providers last season

The most important three attributes for entry into our academy. No idea how Theo or AOC got in ;)

I thought we played well I was impressed with Jay 1st time I have seen him play as a striker & he did well held the ball up was quick & tidy very good goal he will be decent back up for Lambo.

JWP did well as ever & Richardson had a decent game Gazza was good & bad jury still out but has the makings of a decent keeper but not Prem standard as yet.

Yoshida looks very good my only concern is in the air not quite strong enough or big enough but decent with the ball at his feet & seems to have a turn of pace we still need another dominant centre back of premiership standard.

Seabourne is not good enough poor 1st touch nowhere near prem standards.

Enjoyed the game we played some tidy stuff result never in doubt good for the squad to get a run out looking forward to the draw COYS

Gazza- couple of good saves couple of fumbles bit of a character though

Richardson - good game couple of bad crosses

Yoshida- class

Jos - diss appointed didn't get his Tuesday night goal

Sebourne- looked ok actually tried really hard

Ward-Prowse - good game one brilliant cross field ball to Richardson unbelievable he is so young

Cork- good to see him back worrying about knock and a little crab like at times

Chaplow - ok didn't seem that interested at times

De Ridder - cuts inside far too much and please look up before crossing typical winger I suppose

Guly - strange player sometimes looks great but very inconsistent

Rodriguez - did well very good goal rubbish penalty but far better as a no 9

Enjoyable evening flat atmosphere value for money .... Just about!

Why on earth was this game not 'free' to Season ticket holders to at least get a decent sized crowd in and some atmosphere for a Cup match?! At least the younger occasional fans in the Northam who come in for the cheaper matches tried to get some noise going - it would help the players to see less empty seats.

We had 9 'first teamers' playing last night (Seaborne and SDR excluded) you can see the training disciplines even when a team is thrown together like this. That is why it was a good performance, you must judge the team as a whole not a set of individuals.

Best for me was Gazzas near post saves, bettered only by the Wednesday goalie tip over from his own defender, briliant reactions!

SDR was a really effective outlet and every time he had the ball he went at the defence and pulled it across, only JR was making runs. Guly as the support striker didn't make a lot of effort to get into the box when SDR had the ball and Chaplow's job is to cover the back post and didn't ever get there. The midfield offered little in forward runs.

Gazzaniga fumbled a couple, once Hooiveld went for the same ball, but he made important saves and caught one late on that KD may well have knocked back out to the incoming striker. The central defensive pairing for Saturday is going to be an interesting selection, I thought that Fonte and Yoshida looked a better pair than last night but Hooiveld is the best header and Fellaini is a threat in the air. With the three fit could Yoshida at left back with Clyne returning to the right be an option.

I don't like zonal marking, I prefer a mixture, keep the 2/3 best headers of the ball free and the rest mark tight. he best headers then go for the ball. The players standing are at a disadvantage as the forwards can run in and get more height than the static markers.
