Everton build up

Sorry, but playing Frazer at RB is a recipe for disaster, don't get me wrong I like him, but we need Clyne at RB to try to negate the threat from Baines & Pienaar. Their right side is not so much of a threat (Neville), hence why it would probably make sense to play Yosh at LB (where is can play) and use Jos in the middle to counter Fellaini. Otherwise side is what I would pick, actually we are getting close to having a side that picks itself.

Don't think Neville plays RB for them. Their new right winger looks very lively and will give whoever plays left back a problem.

Fellaini starts in advanced midfield and doesn't get in the box for the early ball. Fellaini doesn't get in the box until the move is more advanced and the overlapping run gets made. Whether the overlap is found or not, our defence will move across to deal with the run and our fullback would cover the far post. Fullbacks are often quite small these days and big forwards like Lambert and Fellaini can win easy headers. Against Villa, we had most of the play in the 2nd half and didn't really have to worry about overlaps or back post headers. We won't get the run of the game at Goodison and chances are we'll have to defend some crosses from Baines and Pienaar. Clyne is 5'7" and would get murdered by Fellaini in the air. As you say, Neville isn't much of a threat and presence will be needed more there than pace and close tackling on that side.

They play Hibbert with either Osman or Mirralas in front I think.

Mirralas - Osman is in the centre.

Would expect their team to be as follows:

--------------Howard------------

Hibbert-----Distin-----Jagielka-----Baines

Mirallas-----Osman-----Neville-------Pienaar

---------------Fellaini-------------------

-----------Jelavic or Anichebe----------

Clyne will be trying to stop the cross, rather than defending directly with Fellaini.

Of course Lambert always drifts onto the full back but we should be looking to defend that well.

Phil Neville plays in central midfield for Everton.

Nope, he has been playing right back or right side of midfield most games this season, hence why I made the remark about our left side, Clyne would be wasted on the left, we desparately need him on the right (maybe we can clone him and play him on both sides, a Clyne clone would be good).

In the main Neville plays as a defensive midfielder, in-front of the back 4 for Everton. Can see him being put on Ramirez to try and take him out of the game.

I was with him until this point...

Their energy as a team is similar to Lambert’s Norwich last season but their style is more akin to Blackpool’s during their solitary season in the top flight

Blackpool...?

Everton v Southampton

Southampton deserved their first win of the season against Aston Villa last weekend and picking up their first three points is extremely important for them, but going to Goodison Park is a different proposition altogether.

In fact, I don't see Saints picking up very many points away from home full stop. They look very vulnerable when teams go at them, and Villa didn't really offer much of a challenge in that respect.

In the Championship, Nigel Adkins and his side probably felt they could go away and win at most places but I think they will learn very quickly that things are different in the top flight, especially when they travel to places like Goodison where they have to play the crowd as well as the team.

The Everton fans were singing 'we're going to win the league' during their impressive win at Swansea last week.

I think they are getting carried away a bit there, but they have made such a strong start and don't forget they should really have beaten Newcastle which would mean they would have even more points. You get the feeling they are going to have a really good season, although that might depend on how many injuries they get.

Prediction: 2-0

I'm watching the press conference at the moment. There's a bit in the interview where a reporter says "this time last week you were getting sacked...". NA turned on him pretty quick. Reminiscent of Fergie. Get in there Nige!

Anyway, ahem, Everton vs Southampton. I'm not going there to watch us lose. That may happen, but got to have a bit of faith. Plus there are genuine reasons to be cheerful. Both strikers off the mark. I know that Jay Rod's goal was against Sheff Wed, but he'd score that goal against most teams - movement and speed were that good. His movement was good all game. Rickie is going to be in his element up there, and his goal against Villa last week was delicious.

I've been a Saints fan long enough to know that Goodison is not a happy hunting ground. Everton are normally kryptonite to us and they're probably spoiling to give someone a hiding after getting done by Leeds.

We lost 4-1 last time I went. Will probably lose again, but we've got a few surprise packages, such as Ramirez and Lambert (he is a surprise to most of these players), that could make the difference.

I think we will lose this one but not many teams get anything at Everton. The key position is RM to prevent marauding attacks down our right side.. Puncheon/Guly or we gamble with Mayuka to keep Baines quiet which NA probably won't do. The RB position is not too important as Richardson won't have a flying winger to contend with. We should play Clyne LB as Fox is shot away

Scout Report: Moyes Tactical Blueprint for Southampton

(Good graphics on the site)

After the misery of Leeds on Tuesday we welcome Southampton – comfortably the most interesting to watch of the newly promoted sides – to Goodison in a fixture which has produced some high scoring and exciting games in years gone by.

Adkins Tactics & Selection

Defensively Saints will look to play a high line and condense the play further up field. They have made the fewest fouls in the top flight but have made the most interceptions with midfield workhorse Schneiderlin making the most in the top flight. In a contact sport where contact doesn’t seem to be allowed anymore, interceptions are the most effective, low risk method of regaining possession. It does perhaps hint that our visitors lack some bite although at the same time it reduces the amount of free kicks conceded which was a crucial error Swansea made against us last week.On the ball, they have played the fewest long balls per game and the most through balls, so they obviously like to play a short passing game and look for incisive balls in the final third. They are very positive too as was shown by the fact they led against both the Manchester clubs going into the final stages of the games. The United match in particular demonstrated this positivity in possession, with 33% of their passes being played forward compared to United’s 27%. This approach should be applauded given the predominance of percentage football evil cabal bores such as O’Neill and fattie Allardyce.

Its more than likely Saints will open up in a 4-1-4-1 setup something like this; Gazzaniga – Clyne, Fonte, Hooiveld, Fox – Shneiderlin – Puncheon, Davis, Ramires, Lallana – Lambert

Strengths

In Schneiderlin they have the player who has covered more ground than any other Prem player this season. The ex Strasbourg man has averaged over 7 miles per game, peaking at.7.31 miles vs Man City. Their energy as a team is similar to Lambert’s Norwich last season but their style is more akin to Blackpool’s during their solitary season in the top flight.Going forward they have scored plenty with Toffees fan Adam Lallana the key creative force. He will start on the left but will come inside. He’s not got the pace to go past players but he does have a great knack of drifting into pockets of space and playing a killer pass with 2 assists to his name already. The best way to defend him is to show him the outside as he isn’t a great crosser as the below chalkboard demonstrates; misfiring all 10 crosses vs Wigan. In many ways Lallana is a bit like Leon Osman style wise. You can get the Soton man at 16/1 with Boylesports to get the first assist

Weaknesses

Averaging 3 goals conceded per game is quite a damning statistic. Already goalkeepers and centre backs have been shuffled in and out which doesn’t provide cohesion. Man United got 3 goals from crosses whilst Gibbs – very much a poor man’s Leighton Baines – had a field day in the Gunner’s 6-1 slaying a few weeks ago against Clyne at right back who was afforded little protection from Puncheon on the right side of midfield.

The above shows an example of Arsenal overloading down the left 3 v 1 on Clyne for the first of Gibbs two assists. The below visual is from our last home game against Newcastle and shows how Fellaini (blue) similarly likes to drop into this zone to assist Baines/Pienaar (yellow) overload the opposition down the left. It’s likely this is going to be an area we can get plenty of joy.

Excellent Mr Bond, but I think they've forgot Gaston and Yoshida and hopefully will be punished for it...

Not an easy game and I think we'll probably lose 3-1.

However, the keys to this game will be shoring up the flanks, in particular ensuring Clyne is not exposed and secondly, not giving them time on the ball, meaning playing OUR game higher up the pitch, just like we did 2nd half against Villa. If we set-up the defence for zonal marking for corners and free-kicks into the box, Fellaini will have a field day. IF NA gets the tactics right and the team give everything for 94mins, we might come away with a 1-1 or 2-2 draw.

Lawro does have a point about our vulnerability. But we may have remedied that with a new keeper, centre-back and the dropping of our left back, who is woefully out of form.
