I could watch that over and over and over and over .....................again! Will he ever be any good in the Premier League !

Nah can't see it myself, I mean what place is there in the Premier League for a striker who learned his trade in the lower leagues and was bought for a very flattering £1m, well those type of players just don't belong in the premier league.......... Worst of all with players like Lambert working and scoring his way through the leagues people are going to find out that the goals are the same size and the balls just as round in the Premier as in any league in the world!!!

................ Next there will be 17 year olds in midfield and a 20 year old in goal!!!!!!!!!.............

:D

Honest answer: Bloody good on him!!

Love his skill, his committment, and obvious talent - but most of all his attitude - unassuming, down to earth and you can see the real joy he has in playing and what he has achieved the hard way. An example to all young players that you keep working, keep trying and eventually good things will happen. When I see 16 year old kids at top clubs, with Diamond studs, flash cars, its no wonder many of them dont break through - things have come too easy for them.

Maybe if his name was Ricardo Lambertolli - his age/history in the lower leagues would not have had so many suggesting he would not cut it...?

The thing I was looking forward to most this season was to see how RL faired. Very happy at the moment.

I think that it is more important than just the job he is doing for us, as it shows that British "journeymen" from lower leagues can cut it in the top league and I suspect that on current form, he would get in at least half the PL teams (although I realise that I might be looking through rose tinted glasses). I think it important that the top clubs actually look at lower league English players, rather than automatically look overseas. For one it just sends all the money out of our game and into some other league, and then of course it doesn't help the English national side, which seemingly isn't overly important. Saints aren't really any better than any other team, as we had 5 English players starting on Saturday and a Scot, with another Englishman coming on as a sub. I don't buy the argument that English players are all too expensive - why should they be? Under EU law, there is no restriction of trade restricting the nationality of the match day squad, so English players aren't in any higher demand. Chelsea and Arsenal are well known to have started games with no Englishmen at all.

Touch and accuracy great but I always think I've never watched anyone who strikes the ball so hard. Both that and the pen past the keeper before he had a chance. Argued with a mate he would score at this level and one of my reasons was how true he hits a football - where are the poncy prem "how hard someone kicks it" stats when u need em

An argument I've often made. EU Employment rules are one thing. The rules of any competition the clubs choose to enter are another. If the comp rules are that minimum of say 50% on pitch have to be English then they will naturally look to employ more Englishmen. Who knows how many more Lamberts there could be in the lower leagues waiting their chance?

Spot on.

Lambert strikes the ball so hard (with both head and feet) that it doesn't have to be inch perfect to have a chance of beating the keeper. That's not all he has to offer of course because he's a smashing all round footballer, but even so .....

Mesmerising clip, thx for posting.

Not sure that many defences will cope with him when he plays like he did second half Saturday, particularly if he strikes up a good understanding with Gaston -hopefully the link up play for Clyne's goal is just a taster (also in the clip Gaston runs into the space on the left created by the defence being sucked in by SRL, though he doesn't look too upset that SRL took it on & didn't backheel to him!). SRL's ability when on the flanks (Vlaar dazed & confused for JP's goal) or when dropping deep (to dink the through ball in for Mayuka) makes him very difficult to mark.

Agree with Frank's cousin; would swop for RVP but not any other PL forward.

I think we can all count ourselves very lucky to be Saints fans, and this is largely down to the backroom staff and players that step up to the mark! Often, and sometimes, far too often, us fans moan about lack of commitment, lack of loyalty, not pushing that extra yard, not giving that extra ounce. Well, with a player like Rickie Lambert in the team, we all have a measuring stick to gauge others against. I am sooooo proud of Rickie for getting fit, working on his touch, working on his all round play. Don't any of you think for a moment that this was an easy task, you can see the improvement year on year with Rickie, and the only way his has achieved what he has is through sheer hard work and determination. He is an example to us all. Also, I am sure Rickie would be the first to recognise the efforts put in by the backroom staff to enable hime to get to this level, and the rest of the team for allowing him to play his 'style' of football. This is a team and Rickie is the guy that adds the gloss.

I rarely mention Rickie as he is just always outstanding, but today, I feel compelled to recognise the truely magnificent rise to where he is today, and long may he continue to score at this level! (with Saints!)

Well done Rickie, you are a role model for any young aspiring person out there, not just in football, but in life. You have shown what can be achieved if you try really hard and listen to those around you. You couldn't have got here on your own, so I am sure humility also has paid a part when you have been called out for mistakes or not trying hard enough.

A legend in the making!

The comparisons with Holt are lazy and unflattering.

Comparisons with this guy, who also climbed the lower leagues and just never stopped scoring at any level despite the doubters who continuously thought whichever step-up it was would be too much (who also thought he was just a big lump from the lower leagues) would be much more accurate.

I just going to pick you up on the term journeyman, RL is better than that. Journeyman suggest and average player plying his trade at a number of clubs, RL is more of a late developer, it took him a while to get going for what ever reason. But since then he has had two clubs in six years and was prised away from Rovers for the tidy sum of a million.

Its great that he is doing it in the Prem and lonf may it continue.
