Survey says we're Bompey's biggest rival....

I guess not all teams have that natural historical rival, and so have to desperately manufacture one. I love our derby. Always a great game. Teams without a proper one are missing out. Just listening to my Reading supporting friends in the past talk about 'Aldershot Town' as if there is a serious rivalry there makes me laugh.

It's only like the fake hate we had for Tottenham in the early 00's. It was quite simply embarassing at times with some fans signing how much they hated Tottenham every week when they didn't even notice or care about us. Christ, didn't we even have the club make the embarassing "Be a Gooner for a day" t-Shirts when they played them in an FA Cup game? Utterly cringeworthy.

I didn't need an Atlas to see that most of these " rivalries " are based purely on geography. Of course the nearest side ..in your league.. constitutes a " derby game "....of sorts, but not always.

With last year's derby game v. Pompey , (I can't recall the stats. exactly)... but we hadn't played them nearly as often as many people think, as we weren't in the same league for nearly 20 years before the war. .and about 15 years after it. AND in many cases it was a "friendly rivalry " and not the " hate campaigns" that take place today. After we went up (in 1966) they went down...and the games became much less.

I don't think we'd met Bournemouth ...in a League game.. since the late 1950's until our couple of games in L1. So I'd hardly call them rivals..and not Brighton either, for much the same reasons.

Without reaching for a record book, and purely by guesswork....I'd say that since say 1960...we'd played Norwich, Newcastle, Sunderland, Middles'boro, Notts. Forest and Bolton most often..and usually in Div 2 .(Championship)

...and in the 27 years in old Div.1 / Prem. ...probably(?) ....Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Everton, Man Utd and Leeds.

Difficult to say who I regarded as rivals, but in Div2. the games mentioned were competitive and entertaining... .and winning over any of those Div.1 clubs - as we were often low down in the league ....and every win was nice...but in retrospect... I never expected to beat Arsenal (well not so often) but a victory over Spuds always felt good.....and everyone hated Leeds.

Brighton, Bournemoth, Aldershot or whoever else exists in the South apart from Pompey are not our rivals. Proof of that is we have a history of cooperation when it gets to players. Several former and actual Saints players have played for Brighton and vice-versa (Hammond and Harding the most recent clear examples), and same with Bournemouth (if they really were our rivals would they have accepted to be the starting point of our Academy's rising star in Lallana?).

Just local fans excited by recent league clashes, which for most are very if not completely unusual in their lifetime.

And trying to find London clubs to get a rivalry going is just ridiculous. Reminds me of the Brighton-Palace hate, one if not the most nonsensical rivalry in sport.

I only consider Portsmouth our rivals. Rivalry needs history, it needs both sides to give a damn and, oddly, it needs respect.

Brighton only came close to a rivalry for one season, they then went backwards the next and are now history. Bournemouth fans seem to think we're a rival, out of some stupid resentment at us gifting them loan players and letting them off payments owed, but it's rare to find a Southampton fan who consider them any more than a local team.

Yup, Bompey now "officially" consider us their biggest rival. We consider them to be our third biggest rival..

Would you rank Bompey or Brighton in our top 3 rivals, or would you consider the likes of Reading or Spurs?

(And 73.9% of fans say they would miss their rivals if they cease to exist)

Good to see Skates the 20th most offensive club to the neutral fan. No support, hated by the neutral. Where does this great club image and support come from on the tv?
