I would love to know our percentage of penalties we have scored since the early 70's.

I will go for 98% of penalties scored while 2% have missed.

Saints have been blessed to have Peach, Le Tiss, Beattie & Rickie Lambert.

Why have we had so many good penalty takers as I know the top teams seem to struggle so much.

That penalty Rickie took Saturday, could any keeper in the world move fast enough to stop it even if they knew which way he was going to put it?

Its funny how he stares at that corner and says to the keeper 'Good luck as you have no bloody chance pal.'

I've watched the highlights from yesterday a few times now and I just love the sound the net makes from his thunderous drive from the spot. He looked a little nervous stepping up to take it, taking a visable deep breath. He must of known the game was won at that point so I can only assume he was wanting to show he can score penalties at this level and that it was playing on his mind a little. He more than proved he can, his technique is spot on. Pun intended :) The power and accuracy of that penalty was up there with his best for us. We've been very lucky to have some great penalty takers over the years, Le Tissier being the stand out, I do wonder if Lambert will go on to beat his record as he is certainly capable.

That's a massive ask as Le Tiss 47 in 48 is in another league.

I sense the only penalty Rickie will miss is the one for England in a penalty shoot out :)

I filmed Rickies penalty at Watford last season just about everyone who has seen it (who supports other teams) just says Wow! that's how you take a penalty: just try and take the back of the net out!!

Off the top of my head I can remember each of these all missing 1 each:

Quashie

John

Euell

Surman

McGoldrick

Wotton

Sharp

Rasiak also missed one but scored from the rebound.

In shootouts, Chris Marsden missed at Bolton in the league cup, Michail Antonio missed against Norwich in the JPT (think someone else missed in that one as well) and of course Leon Best and Inigo Idiakez at Derby in the playoffs.

Who was it when we missed 2 in one game when we lost 0-3 at home to Watford. Was it the same player? Paul Wotton definitely missed one of them.

Wotton missed the second, but someone else missed the first, possibly McGoaldrought

McGoldrick missed the first one.

How the keeper never got sent off for conceding it, I'll never know

I don't know the correct answer to your question, but considering the fact that our greatest ever penalty taker had a success rate of lower than 98%, I'd say you're well off the mark.

Probably closer to 85% would be my guess (I'm not old enough to remmeber anything before the 90's either), especially if you consider all the ones we missed in our first few years in the Championship - I seem to remember going through a spell of missing more than we scored.

Having said that, Rickie Lambert has the potential to drag that percentage back up again.

Fixed that for you.

Dont forget between MLT and Lambo, David McGoldrick passed back to the keeper on a number of occasions when penalties were awarded to Saints during the Double Dutch days.

mmm. Surman and Wotton missed two or three between them as well. Our penalty record that season can't possibly have been the happy side of 50%

of course this is not Saints, but every time there is a discussion about penalties... I recall the words of my first boss - over 40 years ago.

Born in London, he was an Arsenal fan and never stopped recalling the name of Ronnie Rooke.

A player whose career, sadly, was divided either side of WW2, Rooke signed for Arsenal in 1946 and in two seasons scored 68 goals in 88 starts..

My(former)boss said Rooke could kick a ball harder than anyone he'd ever seen....and on occasions put both the goalie ....and the ball.... in the back of the net.

It always come to mind when I watch penalty-takers, and I think we see that few goalies get much of a chance when Rickie Lamberet takes his penalty kicks.

Surman missing one at the Keepmoat helped me pocket £1250 :)

George O'Brien used to belt them too.

Lambert has a very similar attitude to to George O'Brien... who used to break the back of the net..:D

Mumble the words.....Pick that out the back of the net:rolleyes:

Said to my daughter on Saturday.......Hope Rikeeee does not break the netting..:p

Ruddock smashed that one in at the dell to give us our 1st win in about 138 games :D

1988/89 season, right in front of me in the Milton Road end. I think it was his first penalty for us as well. Imagine the meltdown on here if we went a run like that.

Well you'll have to do better that "I think" to trump a link written at the time with the information I mentioned reported on it. The OS will probably have eradicated it from history as well...

Thanks for posting the video to prove I was right.

I saw Don Roper hit a volley from just inside the centre circle that was so hard it went under the diving goalkeeper, hit the steel support and came back out underneath the still airborne goalkeeper. That was with the old coated leather ball.

Think someone missed one V Leeds on 90/91 (Rideout? Shearer?) then I don't remember anyone missing (because we always had Le Tiss) till Magilton in 96/7. Ruddock scored his most important one but also missed one or two.

I think that was perhaps the most embarrassing goal I've seen someone score. If you were trying to look completely incompetent but still score, that would be perfection.

What a beauty...

Some nice comments on Rickie Lamberts penalty taking from Sir Alex Ferguson !

http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/story/188674.html

"I don't think it's one of these things, I think we have to improve on that," he said. "There was talk about the boy [Rickie] Lambert at Southampton who has scored 31 out of 31. That's what penalty kick taking is all about.

"There are several great examples over the years. [Matt] Le Tissier, 47 out of 48. There was a player in Scotland played for Rangers [Johnny Hubbard], 57 in a row. Your penalty kick is your opportunity to take an advantage - whether it's a foul or a handball - of scoring a goal."
