Gazza proved nothing today, he had little to do and was dodgy on the goal. Kelv would have been slated for standing there rooted to the spot. Suomi Saint Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 I think these threads are very disrespectful. Kelvin has been a great servant to the club and was voted top goalie in both the Championship and League 1. Okay, he has been at fault with some of the goals this season, but who says he can't have a positive influence at the club from here on. Show some loyalty please. Saint Martini Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 I'd say he's pretty screwed. Even if Gazza did nothing except perhaps his save on Bent early in the second that was anything special his excellent footwork calmed our defense and improved our play from the back. I can't see NA reverting back to Davis for the next match and surely Boruc will be our first goallie sooner rather then later. I can't see Davis getting a lot more matches except for maybe one or two cup games. A real shame he just isn't good enough at this level, he failed at Sunderland when he went up with them and is making the same mistakes now. He deserved a chance to prove himself but we can't be sentimental too long. Davis surely understands this, he can't be happy with his performances and knows we have real competition for the number one spot now.

Saint Martini Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 hopefully he'll seize the challenge That's the other possibilty. Increased competition leads to better performances from our original players. We saw that very clearly under Strachan. We brought in Niemi and Jones responded by upping his game. Competition in a squad is a good thing if players respond well.

Thoughts? I don't agree with that part. The scoreline v. Man.City, Man Utd and Arsenal were not a fair accessment of his ability - although he may (quite unfairly IMO)... blame himself for every goal. However, with the arrival of Artur Boruc, KD will undoubtedly take a back seat in the near future. Gazzaninga did... (the little he had to do).. very well, but a home game against a lowly-placed Villa outfit, (who didn't offer much fire power) cannot be reasonably compared with the situation of upcoming games at Goodison and Upton Park, whilst Boruc will fairly certainly take the no.1 shirt for a while, at least. According to other factors (possible injury, loss of form, etc) ...I expect to see KD playing again (at some stage) later this season. Gazzaniga passed the test yesterday, but he is a long way from becoming a Premier League keeper, but is definitely " one for the future"

Saint Fan CaM Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 "How screwed is Kelvin Davis?". Well if that's not disrespectful I don't know what is! Reminds me of a kid throwing away his old toy after being bought a new one. KD has been instrumental in so much of Saints rise through the leagues, both on and off the field - he's been a faithful servant and his saves did as much in the Championship as Lamberts goals. We've brought in good competition for the no.1 jersey - KD may still be selected if he proves he's better than the other guys (Gazza was OK, but let's face it he had little to do and on a couple of occasions looked rooted to the spot). So if KD plays again, are you saying you'll not be supporting him? Suggest you get a little perspective.

sentry Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 Agreed a great club captain, he is certainly going to have to fight for his place now, but 'screwed' is the the word. You could have picked a better word. He is almost 36 and only top top keepers usually play that long, he will be phased out but that is not a bad thing, his name will stand proudly next to a list of quality saints keepers, shilton, flowers, jones, neimi, wright (p.s thats a joke). sotonist Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 We were always looking to bring in two keepers. One for the future and one for the first team. We were never going to bring in someone worse than Kelvin so surely he always knew that at best he'd at best be in direct competition for the top spot. His start wasn't the best. He was bought for the championship and eventually he did the job we bought him for, beyond the expectations of many. Many of the improvements he made last season seem to have disappeared, so unless he can find his mojo again, I don't even know if I feel confident in him as back up. BARCELONASAINT Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 I don't think Kelvin is screwd at all. I think it's very clever management by NA. He fully knows the bloke took the brunt of fans criticism when Sunderland were relegated and he is aware again his number 1 keeper is under intense pressure again from the fans for shipping 14 goals in 4 matches. Kelvin needed taking out of the firing line yesterday before his confidence was totally shattered and NA recognised this. Gazza is the future otherwise we would not have bought him.....but i do not think he is the immediate answer and yesterdays signing of Boruc i believe shows that. I still think KD has a future here but it will depend hugely on how he reacts to this set back.....NA might well have saved KD season by taking him out of the firing line yesterday. Jimmy_D Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 With signing Boruc, and Gazzaniga looking good in the last game, I do fear we've seen him play his last game for Saints. That said, I'm sure he'll be doing everything he can to earn his place back, and good luck to him, I hope he can push his way back into the first team. If we have seen his last game for us though, we owe him so much. I don't think we'd be in the Premier League right now without that heroic performance at Leeds, for a start. SNSUN Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 Kelvin's not screwed, he'll still have a part to play this season, but this new signing will give him a kick up the backside. Perhaps with only Gazza behind him in the pecking order he'd grown a tad complacent. Yesterday's ommission will have kicked him up the bum enough, but this signing of Boruc will well and truly do it. He is clearly a great character to have about the place and I would hope he has a place on the bench for the rest of the season. He stayed with us when he could have jumped ship and has been great for us for the last four seasons. In the ultra competitive premier league we've had to take the decision to replace him, about which I am pleased, but it doesn't diminish his contribution to this club. Fantastic professional, and I hope he stays around the club for a few years to come.

derry Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 (edited) Gazzaniga did four things yesterday that were standout. He calmed Fonte who was much more assured not having to worry about KD, He made a top class save at his near post one on one, with Bent clear through, He made a clearance when the last man outside the area, he was assured when he was given the ball and was being closed down and didn't rush his clearance. Furthermore he had no part in the goal we conceded as the players played pinball in front of him then the ball was deflected with Fox totally failing to react. Davis has been a good servant and well paid for it since he arrived, the problem now is that his deficiencies have been accentuated by the greater skill levels of the Premier League. He got by with superb shot stopping in the lower leagues but the better finishing in the Premier is depriving him of that, plus his vulnerability at the near post, which has been there for a long time, eg Peterborough (a) in Div 1. Micky Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 Whether he is finished or not, I personally would like to thank him for his efforts. His efforts have seen this club through the darkest days in many years of the clubs history - he has helped in our elevation to the top level once again. He had offers to go and 'swan' elsewhere (probably for more sheckles too) - but he stuck it out with us and got us through two promotions. Yeah, we can throw him on the scrap heap now - he's beyond his best, nowhere near good enough and well over the hill. But, not beyond thanking though. bender Posted 23 September, 2012 Share Posted 23 September, 2012 TBF, he must have known his days would shortly be numbered especially considering he knows we have cash to spend. Also, in his last season in the Prem for Sunderland (05-06) he was awful and Sunderland were laughing at us for taking him for £1m. That said he's been a great servant for us. Turned down a move for Wham in 2009 in favour of first team football for a team in L1 with -10. For me he will join a list of players who I consider true warriors for the club during our wilderness years but now realise they don't cut the mustard, eg Hammond, Harding, Barnard etc

There is now healthy competition for the number 1 spot now and thats how it should be. I still think Kelv has his part to play. If Boruc does become our new number 1 as we all suspect he will, then Davies could become our Paul Jones to Boruc's Antti Niemi. A good solid pro to call on if and when he is needed. Kelvin Davis has been a big character for us and stuck with us through thick and thin so it would be great to think we he still we be a big part of our future in some shape or form. Saint Bones Posted 24 September, 2012 Share Posted 24 September, 2012 I think Nigel will be looking at Davis to become more involved with the running of the team, coaching and helping the youngsters as well as still fighting for his place in the teams., The words that Nigel used when referring to KD just had me thinking he is now not a throw away - but of use to the team/Club in other ways. I don't think the OP was trying to be rude or disrespectful - choice of words may not have been everyone's cup of tea - but I dare say he (Davis) is going to have a very hard time of it getting back to being Saints #1 - Here's hoping he rams these words down my throat with some class A goalkeeping in games to come.
