Mayuka Leaves Saints Permanently

With the first two, I can see why we signed them though. I still don't really get why we ever got anywhere near signing Mayuka.

Largely based on being Golden Boot winner of 2012 AFCON, that and having a reasonably good strike rate for Young Boys. It wasn't completely out of left court. The Black Box was still at the Beta testing stage at the time. Some of the algorithms were updated before the final production version was released.

When Saints were in Palafrugell for the Llagostera pre season game, we were sat in front of Jos Maya and Mayuka and they were happy to chat, especially Jos. During the first half MoPo was obviously tinkering with formations, I was surprised to hear Mayuka asking Jos "what formation are we playing now?". Not the sort of thing you would expect to hear from a player who had been with us a while and played the game at a decent level.

As has been said already he had a good record at Young Boys and had enjoyed a very good ACON so had ticked a few positive boxes to take a punt on, hopefully he can get himself going again.

To some of the posters complaining about the pace of our team etc- Mayuka is proof that buying a fast player doesn't guarantee success.

Good luck to him- only ever thing he done for us that I can remember is winning a penalty in the 4-1 victory over Villa in our first season.

just at the point in time when we thought he had been released - we got a buyer. I hope for his sake that he can resurrect his career, but we've got a deal anyway.

OK the fee may not have been anywhere near the £3 million+ we paid out (plus salaries) since then, but ....it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

We (hopefully) have learned the lesson of Ramirez and Osvaldo deals, but even though EM didn't cost as much an average salary could cost us £1,5/£2 million a year.

However, I think it strange that these " bad deals " were made on Cortese's watch, and involved clubs in Switzerland / Italy where he obviously had " friends ".

Interesting looking back at the posts on the first page of this thread!

Has there been an outfield player that's been with the club this long, but has played less?

Not a "current" one, but Jonno Quick Forte had no kind of on-field Saints career even by the time we were in the Championship, never mind the two years we paid him as a Prem player.

Signed 31 Jan 2011, left 1 Aug 2014, started 2 league matches for Saints (scored 2 goals!). Actually had 4 goals in 5 starts in all competitions thanks to his 10 sub appearances.

Mayuka started 1 league game (15 subs) and 2 League Cup games (1 sub). 1 goal.

LOL. The Ritz ? My old haunt in my stoodent days. Monday nights 1987-1992.

Wasn't the last stune of the night always the theme to Dambusters?

Went the odd time as a student (92-95); mostly there in the few years after. Failing miserably to get any physical contact with da wimmin.

In fact I reckon Mayuka scored more often than I did.

See - brought it back on topic. True though.

I still do not understand why or how we signed him. Who was the scout? Who within Saints was pushing the deal?

Stoke signed Andrew Davies from us a week before (19th August 2008 ) and it MUST have had something to do with that.

At the time we were tangibly skint and Lowe was doing all the deals he could to ship out players - by August it became obvious we also needed some warm bodies in return where possible; Licka, Lundekvam, Makin, Idiakez, Ostlund, Viafara, Baseya, Powell, A Davies, Safri and J Wright were released or left by July '08 as well as the Bale lump sum, and August 2008 saw only Forecast and Pulis in (both from clubs we'd recently concluded deals with).

So I suspect your answers are: Tony Pulis and Lowe both instigators and pushing the deal. I shouldn't think we had many scouts left by then.

can't recall the exact date, but there was a rumour that his Dad (Tony) was up for the Saints manager's job - as it was the son was signed - but not the father

.....not sure what job Mayuka's father applied for .......
